what's up ruin thred?

i'm not that big into ruins but this one's railroad related so i love it.

all with 58mm XL, it has nice flare apparently.

Some history:

"Initially, the Port Morris and Glenwood stations each contained four General Electric 5000 kilowatt steam turbine driven generators. By 1929, an additional 20,000 kilowatt turbine unit had been installed at Port Morris and two of the original 5000 kilowatt units at Glenwood had been replaced by three 20,000 kilowatt turbine units.

In 1927, the operation of both stations had been taken over by the New York Edison Company (the predecessor of Consolidated Edison).

The stations continued to be operated by Consolidated Edison, but Port Morris was retired in 1952 and had been demolished by the late 1980’s. A power system switching house still stands at that location, however.

The Glenwood Station was retired in the early 1960’s. The derelict structure still stands today and plans have been proposed for decades for its adaptive re-use. As late as the year 2005, its original two smokestacks were still standing !"

Cold Springs near Santa Barbara

4x5, Rodenstock 150mm, Delta 100, :04 second exp.

Well this image was good and bad.

My wife and I stopped at Cold Springs for lunch. After checking out the location I found this building. At first I wasn't going to waste a sheet of film after getting an exposure reading of (0.0) but my wife said I should try anyway. I guessed at the :04 exposure, it was very dark and hard to make out anything even with my eyes. So I was very pleasantly surprised when the shot came out. I only had to remove some dust, no adjustments.

The bad news was as we were walking back to the car after taking the foto I noticed that someone had run into our car...
no note, nothing, just a dented car. so the shot turned out to be a bit more expensive than the $2.00 I was worried about spending on film.

Thanks Kirk, was playing with the 2D bill board flat ends of the out buildings juxtaposed with the 3D schoolhouse and the mini landscape framed dead center between them.
I was never able to get the tonal balance right until I got a V700 about a month ago and printed this digitally. Man I love the control, and I'm just beginning to use PS (big learning curve) so I hope get better at this digital workflow.

Ralph Weimer

Walking around the place, I found a vantage point outside the barrier that presented these three columns inside my frame from a perspective that wasn't enface, like most of the Windsor photos I've seen. I also liked that two other lines of columns were visible in the background giving a sense of dimension to what's left of the plantation house. The sense of viewing these columns from a close-to-the-ground perspective is due to them being rather tall, the wide-angle lens, and the Crown Graphic's limited movements.

Is the composition bad?

Leigh
6-Nov-2012, 03:49
Is the composition bad?
No. I like it.

I would have moved very slightly to the right, to center the middle foreground column between the two in the background, but that's just a nit, and personal opinion.

Nice shot.

Hi Joe, yes it is a strange one. I found this shot in some abandoned outbuildings behind Casa Colonels, which is a tourist attraction of the island. The hill in the distance is an extinct volcano, hence the perfect conical shape. I've no idea why the drums were put in the wall, and I can only assume the circular trough was either for feeding animals or some kind of grindstone?

It was quite an experience climbing to the top of Cheops at 3:00am to do the photograph at sunrise. The climb down in the light was far worse since I could see how far I could fall. I was greeted by 7 guards with guns and managed to talk the $200 fine down to $10. I still look at the image after nearly 30 years and can't believe I climbed. I would never do it at this point in my life.

Nice image. Really gets the light in there.

Reconstructed? Are you sure? I've got quite a few Chaco archaeologists and NPS park rangers as friends and been through Pueblo Bonito many times with them and never heard that. Stabilized yes, even beams above the doors replaced yes, but reconstructed I don't think so. When excavated these rooms were full of debris and cleared but not reconstructed at this ground level-upper levels sometimes yes. The debris at the ground levels protected the walls and kept them stable. Once cleared more had to be done. Maybe wrong choice of words? Those rooms are used as examples of classic Chaco Masonry by many academics.

Kirk, that was an assumption on my part based on early activity by the Nat. Geographic Society. Even as I look at my image it appears that the timbers at the top look original which indicates the walls are original and so quite remarkable examples of Chaco construction as you point out. Thanks for the heads up.

The first thing I saw was the Kiva, and it occurred to me that I might not get to New Mexico anytime soon, so it will have to do. Then when I got around to a good view of it, the alien background was inescapable... I like to think that maybe the contraptions are a spaceship that came in for a landing when they heard the chants and saw the dances...

Friendship was a cranberry farming community that was abandoned in the 1930s or thereabouts. What is
left of it has suffered extensive vandalism over the years. The State, having no money or interest for
historic preservation, has attempted to preserve something of what is left by dumping concrete into the
basements, putting up steel barriers, and so on.

It was just me and the birds there, this day. One bird flew into my car and needed help to get out. A
swallow, I believe.

Kerosene Hat, Thanks for the Anasazi ruins, one of my favorite subjects. I'm more attracted to your "Pueblo Ruins" because I've seen similar images of "House on Fire," but your Chaco image is more individual. I've got a bunch of Chaco and other Anasazi images I've made, but none look like your framing and take on the Pueblo Ruins.

Peter, thank you for the compliment. I struggled with several other compositions at Chaco - it's hard to capture the magnitude of the place and the awe one feels. I kept reaching for the wide angle and then finally reached a longer lens and ended up pleased with this composition. This was early morning at the larger ruin site, as part of a Steve Simmons workshop of Historic Sites in the Southwest. I look forward to returning to Chaco - what an incredible place to (not) sleep for a night under the full moon. Hopefully, there are no more oil & gas drilling permits issued close by...

Jim, if you're asking about the image I just posted it's Fort Flagler (Marrowstone Island, Washington). I'm not sure of the original use of the building but it's surrounded by a massive berm, no room for railroad tracks.

The railroad tracks still see some use, but the OW Railroad Station in Middletown NY has seen better days. The building now sits fenced off and falling apart, and when I was there it looked like the back half of the roof had caved in.

Andreios, the way you print and tone these images is perfect for the subject matter. They feel to me like pictures of "lost time", which is something that only photography can do, I think.

Dugan
30-Oct-2021, 14:02
Andreios, that is a beautiful image.
Your tonality is very reminiscent of albumen prints.
Bravo!

John Layton
30-Oct-2021, 14:41
yes...that (albumen-like) tonality - the movements (or slightly out of focus) in the leaves at the left, plus the subtly bright sky which, for me, equates somewhat to ortho film - works so well in concert with such an "archaic" subject.

andreios
31-Oct-2021, 02:46
Joe, Dugan, John, thank you so much.
I am quite happy with the print indeed - the day I was there was extremely windy, most of my other negatives were either spoiled by it or indeed not even exposed because of the wind.
I normally try to avoid toning prints in such a way that they could be labeled as "retro", but in this case the prolonged bleach to tone up to the midtones worked quite well.
