It's something I've specialised in since the mid 1980's although most of my images are Industrial landscapes.

This was made in the last year of sugar manufacture before the Kidderminster Sugar Beet factory was shut & demolished.

I use to shoot a lot of abandon industrial scenes, but there just aren't as many around the city anymore. At the time, they were one of my favorite subjects.

Very nice! Please keep them coming.

I have a question: how do you folks get access to these sites, the abandoned ones? Do you seek permission? The ones I have seen, and those that have appealed to me, all have "No Trespassing" signs posted conspicuously.

The last one I photographed had been vandalised so access was easy, I would have been able to get permission anyway, it happened to be the former Raistrick & Foster foundry that built the first steam locomotive to run in the US.

Often sites are open despite the warning signs and as they are usually due for demolition no-one is bothered it's more a safety issue.

I did a series of images on my SWC of abandoned places, (called Things Falling Apart on my website).

I enjoy industrial settings, but I don't want to get shell-shocked by it all.

I shoulda shot them on large format, but I prefer the swc.

Almost every location I shot in my series had very questionable access methods. I have a clean criminal record still.

Hey Sean

I like this photo the best, my only two comment that could be critcial is whatever your using to scan with is producing too much noise. Also the third image you see a lot of halo-ing as a result of your older lens, a polarizer might help. Aside from that they are well done....especially this image.

I operate on the principle that it is easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission. And it is even easier to run quickly to avoid the question altogether.

These were all scanned on my little Epson 2450 (i.e. good enough for Flickr). For exhibition prints I have them drum scanned.

Thanks for the advice, I'll look into getting a polarizer for it. It certainly has some problems with flare.

You have posted some great old industrial scenes over the last while, are they shot in TO? Do I recall you mentioning Buffalo in a few posts?
You have found some real beauty sites to shoot.

These ones were Buffalo, Niagara Falls (NY) and Woodstock (ON). I do most of my shooting in Buffalo and Detroit these days. Not much in the way of abandoned industrial spaces in Toronto left anymore (well, none that I haven't already shot to death).

As a struggling photographer right out of school, I spend 6 years as a high pressure welder to make ends meet and buy gear before going "full time" into photography.
I completely know what you are talking about.
And all the old timers had missing fingers, walked with a limp from injury, some sort of battle wound from their time in the shop.

"Sloss Stacks" - Birmingham, Alabama. Sloss Furnaces is now an historic landmark in Birmingham. It used to be a major blast furnace supplying the nation with pig iron during the industrial revolution during the latter half of the 19th century. Many people believe it to be haunted because so many people were killed there on the job. Photographers are welcome to shoot the site, but must first get a pass to do so in advance.

Thanks! Sounds like a very interesting job. What specifically do you mean about it being carbon? I'm not sure exactly what type of material its made out of but it looked to be some sort of steel (you may be able to see the lines where somebody attempted to cut it to pieces with a torch or plasma cutter).

Craig, I think he means 'carbon steel', as opposed to other metals and alloys.

Indeed Jeffrey, thank you.
We just called it carbon, stainless was just 316 and Zirconium was just Zirc etc.
I did Titanium, Zirconium and Hastelloy, very little steel.

This is one of the only pictures I have of myself from those days (early 80's), I loved it when the company's photographer came in, he most often shot a Linhof Tech, sometimes a Hassy, he was always very nice to me and always encouraged me to keep the photography up and to get out of the shop.

Hi Evan,
Thanks!
That was a virgin unit. I am welding each tube end closed by hand.
To avoid heat warp, you weld one tube and cross to the other side for another, back and forth until all tubes are sealed. Then, a red die is put on to check for holes and cracks, then the unit is given a pressure test.
Then the DOL inspectors come in and the tests are done over again in front of them.
Other teams built most of the until and then brought it to me by crane, I had my little corner with classical music blasting (if I wanted the foreman to let me keep the radio, classical was key :) ).
I enjoyed my time in the shop building some really cool things, but it was a means to an end in my case, I wanted to shoot for the newspapers since I was a little kid, and when I was ready, I packed it in and traded looking through the the mask for looking through a Nikon full time.
I still have my old white welding gloves. :)

Do you get to shoot some LF images of your work at the shop?

Love it! I used to hate these things, looks great as an image though.

I was a mechanic working on these when I was young, this looks like the electric start version of the pup motor. Being the apprentice it was always my job to go start the iron when it was -25 or worse. The older ones were pull start and had a pulley you wrapped a cord around that you carried around in your back pocket, once the pup was running well and warm enough you pulled the clutch lever and it started turning the diesel engine over and if you were lucky it would only stall the pup motor a half dozen times before the diesel fired.

I was there, of course, for the hydro plant, but there's no way to separate the two. I know that the paper plant is no longer functioning, I'm not sure about the hydro plant.

Michael,

I really like this one! Just for a technical note, what is the IC of that 147mm lens? Nicely arranged shot, its balanced and from the screwdrivers in the bottom to the clamp in the top left, the eyes don't just really "stop" at any one place, they keep moving :)

bravo!

Here's the first shot on a new project I've started since moving to Indiana. This is a shot of the fans on one of the grain dryers at this 93 year old business. My second day at this location was a bust since I turned my brain off and loaded 6 film holders with the film wrong side out. Lost 6 images, two of which I was really upset in losing. A stupid rookie mistake that I never even made when I was a rookie.

This is a 4x5 shot with a 300mm Nikkor on Acros and souped in Rodinal 1+49.

Again, I can't remember if I posted this one before. My apologies if I did.

This from a HAER job that I did a few years ago at a hydroelectric plant. This is a fairly unique friction gear system that was used to raise and lower the gates that controlled the flow of water into the power canal; until less than two years ago, they were still using these, the very latest in mid-19th century technology!

Here's one from yesterday at the grainery. 4x5 Arista Edu Ultra in Rodinal 1+99, shot with an 8 1/4" Wollensak Velostigmat II at f/32. I really enjoy this lens for certain shots and I think this is one of them. To keep my reflection out of the image, I shot the window off center and then used front and rear swing to put the film and lens perpendicular to the wall. I especially like the reflection of the grain towers on the old wavy glass.

Alas, much of my work involves buildings that are on the chopping block. While rummaging through some older scans, I ran across these images of the Sweet Manufacturing Building in Syracuse; the company used to manufacture iron and steel. Hearing that it soon was to go away back in 2005 or so, I did a quick volunteer documentation job. It really had some fantastic brick work, but structurally it was in rough shape, and threatened to pull down the building next door, to which it was attached (the roof trusses actually punched through the walls of the adjacent building!).

This is an old closed textile plant in North Carolina. The plant was built about 1900 and use water power to drive equipment. Later, in the early 1930 two Westinghouse generators were installed. The plant equipment is long gone, but the generators are still producing power to the local power grid.
The other shot is inside the plant will peeling paint on a support post.

Beautiful photo of a turbine rotor, Donald. Do you know what it is from? It looks like it is from a gas turbine for an aircraft.

And how did you get access to photograph it. You usually don't get to see these things except in a plant for assembly or tear down for maintenance. The machining and balancing of these things costs a fortune.

In the 1960s, when I was with Allison Division of GMC, I wrote a mathematical model of the turbine geometry and used nonlinear programming to optimize the design for minimum weight.

That computer model was used for years until computers were powerful enough to rewrite it using finite element analysis. Even then they were using my model to do the initial optimization before transferring to the finite element mode. It has been over 40 years, but these things still strike a chord with me. I am always impressed with the machine work that goes into these engines.

In 1995, Allison was sold to the Rolls Royce Corporation.

Hi Al,

Thank you for your comment. The turbine was mounted on an exterior wall of a business in Milano, Italy. I imagine that the business manufactured these but I am not sure about that. I can see why the machining is costly.

Thanks for sharing your experience and for answering some questions that I had.

Donald,

As I look at the photo more closely, I think that it was likely from a stream turbine than an aircraft gas turbine. From the density of the blades I assumed it was for a gas turbine. But as I look at the blade attachments, it appears that they are single dovetails, perhaps pinned.

The high temperatures for a gas turbine require more teeth on the attachment to increase the bearing area, anywhere from three to six depending on the design. I don't believe that the wheel in your photo could operate in an extreme temperature environment. Was this company, by chance, involved in power generation?

I really like the cropped view. It makes a nice composition and shows all of the essentials.

Hello everyone. Yes, I photographed early 20th century industry in my series "Remnants". You can see many of them on my website, www.rayvannesphotography.com . I started with my 8x10 but ended up doing many with my 2x3 Grapic Century. All the prints are in platinum and fairly large, usually around 11 x 15". A friend donated a bunch of old Agfa graphic arts film, including hundreds of sheets of 12x18", hence the strange sizes. Looking at my website, I need to put more on including the biggest one I did, " Chain Hoist" which was 18x22".
Enjoy

Dear Robert,

Reminds me of the Mill City Museum, Minneapolis MN - built on the site of a burned-down flour mill (Washburn #1, the origin of General Mills).

The curious thing about this is that your Washburn A Mill seems to have been built in 1874, and the Canterbury Roller Flour Mills in the photograph, the year before in 1873 ;)

Kind regards,

Great pictures. The first view- what it must have been with full activity going on.
The images scroll on my monitor, so the top of the changeroom view caught my eye.
After i looked at the entire image, I went back for just the top- The baskets in the blackness.
That's a very cool view too- reminded me of a sequence from "Time Bandits"

Great thread; my first time browsing it. I enjoy this topic alot, which has much to do with my personal involvement with industry.

I was fortunate to recently meet, through a darkroom-related craigslist transaction, an industrial photographer. We had a brief but enjoyable chat about his work. I think St. Ansel did some industrial work, if I recall correctly.

What interests me the most about this genre is the role people play in industry. People make industry happen. Whether it is the hourly guy/gal sweeping the floor or running the machine, the plant manager, or the CEO, people make industry happen.

My favorite images in this category show people in their workplaces, engaged in industry.

Hi Sean,

To my eye there's a problem with the upper part of the picture, partly discordant composition and partly geometric distortion from the wide-angle lens. The latter is most obvious in the mis-shapen lamp housing at upper left.

I would crop off the top below the gantry crane and the light, leaving a wider aspect ratio that would make it seem brighter and more airy.

Just a suggestion.

That's a good one. Is it bethlehem steel works? I'm not in front of a calibrated monitor, but I would like to get a stronger feeling of the sunlight. Maybe increase the overall saturaton a bit and also brighten the steels highlights and midtones with a linear curve, lifted by its highlights.

I had a look on your web page where I recognized some of your work, and I must say that it is inspiring.

No offense to anyone but the distortion from the wide angle lenses is really pretty amazing and ruinous to me. Anyone figure out a better strategy for dealing with it? (Stitching, Photoshop adjustments, or calling it art?)

The problem with the picture are the two foremost lamps. Since they are not round, that throws out the rest of the scene. Cut out the lamps into seperate layers, and then fix them there. Then fill in where they were, and then layer the lamps back onto the scene.

Did you do this by shifting the lens, or did you rotate the camera?

Very nice! I wonder if the rent-a-cops hassle you there for taking photos?

thank you Sam! no, I had no probs with cops at all so far... on public places I can take any photo I like. However I will try to get permission to get in some facilities to open the treasure box of subjects. I dont like having wire fences in front of all my subjects. I have to tell also, while taking the moonlight image I was a bit afraid of leaving all my equipment alone on the road for about 6-8 minutes, so I could jump in my car and produce those red lights and also I went around this facility and used my headlight-reflectors to light up the bottom parts, so those lights were me actually :) luckily no one was interested in my camera meanwhile, though I saw some cars passing around...

I like this, Christopher. It looks like a conquering robot from a 1950s SF movie.

Thank you, Gents! I had never been right up beneath one of those towers. I knew it was going to be larger than I thought but it was even larger than I thought! I was also thankful that there was nobody there to witness what I had to do to compose on a steep hill, looking nearly straight up, and trying not to slip and tumble down 300 feet of hillside.

Semi-Trailer and Recirculation Tank, Portland

Austin,

The last time I went out and took photos in some industrial areas north of Portland (years ago now), I was either stared down or outright hassled by security personnel. Has this happened to you? I ask because my encounters with gruff guards have made me shy about taking my big camera and tripod out for this sort of photo opportunity.

The photo above was under the East side of the Fremont Bridge. I've never had any trouble there, and actually it was a shop worker that told me it was a recirculation tank which I didn't know. I have, however, been kicked out of the train yards near there, though I have to say, they were pretty nice about it. My strategy for these kind of places is to set up my camera beforehand and carry it over my shoulder. Obviously you can be faster that way, but it also helps in that when security shows up, they know right away what you're doing and it puts them more at ease. Plus, I think that most people have a soft spot for view cameras, so that helps.

Those train yards--especially that illuminated Union Pacific obelisk that sticks up in the middle--are on my short list of subjects to go shoot, but I'm not sure what the best vantage point is. Getting in there is not going to happen, I don't think, given how aggressive train cops are about photographers, but I'm hoping to be able to shoot down into the yards at dusk one of these days.

Don't mention the obelisk! I managed to make what I think was a pretty good picture of it just before getting kicked out, only to later discover that I had double exposed it with another picture from the yard. Two hard won photos ruined in a single mistake! Arghhh. Now I'm afraid to go back in case they recognize me. So it's up to you Jonathan. I'd say you have 5-10 minutes to work with so be ready!

That might be just the challenge I need to get me out of the house and down to the train yard. Obelisk or bust!

9296092961I ran across these images the other day and thought I'd see if they would scan OK. I shot them in 1973 on assignment in a steel mill. Tough shooting and very dangerous and hot! Much to my surprise my old VPS scanned just fine. I always loved these images and thought I would share them. Shot with a Technika and medium tele Schneider Tele Arton.

I have stood right where that man is standing (Hawkesbury, Ontario). I wish they would allow me to come back with a camera, any camera, but so far no.

Don, great shot. I like industry shots where people are part of the subject, showing the importance of people in industry. My career has led me though many potentially great photo opportunities, but I have not made the effort to have a camera + film at hand. Maybe some day...
