I'm looking for someone in the New York metropolitan area to teach me platinum printing. Any leads?

If you're willing to venture a short ways into Connecticut, you should talk with Carl Weese:

The Peter's Valley Center in New Jersey has a workshop this summer - taught by Tillman Crane - I would highly recommend this for someone starting out.

Another vote for Carl Weese.

I did a private 1-day workshop with Carl. What a superb teacher. What a great guy. A fountain of knowledge.

I took a workshop from Tillman Crane at Peter's Valley (not a platinum workshop). He was a great guy and an excellent teacher, plus he makes gorgeous platinum prints. Of course you could just buy a book too but a workshop will probably jump-start you.

My standard advice for anyone taking a workshop at Peter's Valley - when you reserve your room in one of their houses make sure you get a first floor room. The rooms aren't air conditioned and if a heat wave hits you'll almost die on the second floor. I know from unhappy experience.

I can't speak about particular teachers, but CAP (http://www.capworkshops.org/) is offering a workshop with Weese in July. Having taught workshops at CAP I would highly recommend it. While there is much to be said about Peter's Valley, Brian's warning is real. It can get very hot there, and the bugs are terrible.

I took Tillman's Pt/Pd workshop at Peters Valley a few years ago. It is a fabulous way to learn this process. Tillman is a great guy to hang around with, and it is a wonderful teacher and photographer. And seeing his work is a great inspiration.

The way he runs the workshop is very conducive to learning. A small group of people sitting around a table, each working with their own negatives, but working together with the master watching every step making suggestions. In our workshop he started with the conventional process, but then moved into the Na2 method. The description of the workshop this year suggests that he may focus on Na2 - which makes a lot of sense since it's really easier. He is also going to be getting into production of digital negatives - that's an important thing to know about if you want to make larger prints.

Not sure who you can turn to in metro NYC, but Project Basho in Philadelphia often has very high quality workshops for palladium printing:

Also though I think Carl Wese and Tillman Crane are both great photographers, printers and instructors since you are in the NE you may also want to contact Sal Lopes, he is one of the top palladium printers in the US but probably has the least name recognition:

Good luck,
