What is the purpose of that steel, like a measuring tape, that hooks up to the top of my Besseler? Comes from a box near the motor, then stretches up to the top of the frame. I recently aligned the enlarger, and could not see a clear purpose to this. Robert

It's a spring counter balance, intended to compensate for the weight of the color head & its transformer.

The steel tape on my beseler cb7 also has faint markings on it indicating where to put things for different film sizes. There is an arrow behind the negative carrier that is along the path of the tape.
