New topic, I do not think there was separate topic for T55  . Post your Type 55 here, add date and tech info if you remember.

I have made pictures with the type 55 film, but I'd dtill like to hear, whether the pol665 has it's place in this fine compagny...

While I wait:

Emil, IMHO 665 fits, but then we're on the border of probably endless debate of what is LF, and many will debate that vigorously:) T55 is 4x5 - LF for sure, no debates just nice images.

Somebody complained to the moderators (anonymously, of course)
about one of my FP100c45 instants,
so I doubt whether you could get away with less than 4x5.

More lovely pictures in this thread-

I used some of this film the other day, not much to show for it-

I was reminded of how maddening it can be though-
it's so wrong that it's still possible to waste it due to the envelope being less than 100% reliable-

One packet was so messed up that the packet came all the way out,
didn't lock open- and that film inside was anything but flat...

POL 665 is LF in my book!
I have learned, that any format over the 120 film is LF....

If not, I have to remove a LOT of images in here......

but here is another type 55.

Thanks guys! I have a question, I have two boxes left of 55 in the fridge dated Nov 07.I shot 9 sheets of it yesterday and the negs came out very grainy.Could this be the result of the films age, or could it be because the negs just sat in water for an hour and a half before I was able to clear them with sulfite. In the past I would clear the negs immediately after the shot in sulfite.I have 29 sheets left of this stuff and am not sure how to proceed, or if I should even bother shooting the rest and just ebay it..Here is a 50% crop straight from the 4990 scanner with no sharpening or post processing.

Shoot them!! :)
Even if you feel it is grainy, that is still a very nice frame!

I never clear my negs in sulfite (or almost never) and just pop them into a gravity works film washer.

I have film from the late 90s that is still good, were they in the fridge all the time?
The only bad old type 55 I have had was that I left out of the fridge for a long time.

Well they were out of the fridge for a few weeks right after I bought them, but have been in the fridge ever since.Looking at my other 55 negs, they are much smoother like this one

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3297/3485166680_6365ba0c7a_o.jpg

But even zoomed all the way out this run looks too grainy to me.If I try and apply any kind of sharpening to the iris, it looks like it was shot on 35mm pushed Tri-X :(

Here are some I just dug up. I am relatively new to 4x5. I started shooting polaroid to get a "feel," mostly type 54. Then I got a few boxes of 55 so I could make enlargements.

I have since shot some Tmax, but have yet to develop it to see how I did.

In the late 90's I used to get this stuff free from a Polaroid rep. I didn't use a whole lot of it because I always used it as a precursor to the image on film. I saved negs every now and then. Often when I was too lazy to develop film I would shoot the 55. If I only knew then that it was going away... Oh well.

 Amazing pictures Gandolfi:cool:

I miss the 55 very much. It was phantastic to peel the sheet apart, hold the blue smeared negative against the sky and see the result.
I'm very happy that I began at a time (2006) when that film was available for a reasonable price, especially boxes that were just expired. They were sold for half of the price, but worked very well.

I want to share these two shots that I made on an abandoned railroad freight yard
both with a Nikkor W 5.6/105 using an orange filter and light meter set at 25 ASA.

missed this comment.

Yes - other films are fantastic also.

But to me, there's a huge difference.
The type 55 and the 665 pol films are so perfect for solarization - one can even make partial solarization on them...

Also I make a habit of ruining my negs. These films are very thin, and that makes it so much easyer to manipulate - some manipulations can't be done on "normal" films...

I will have lots of regrets - it like a special tool being taken away from me.

Thanks, Jim. Gandolfi definitely has much better 'control' over the solarization process. I think age might have some affect on the develpoer - fixer actions on the pod's monobath which probably affects the amount of solarization, so control is a nebulous thing. I found I had to peel it apart fairly quickly and hit it with the flash...I think the strength of developer part of the monobath decreases with age allowing the fixer part to stop the solarization if one waits too long to peel it apart. Just a pure guess and I more than welcome someone saying it is all nonsense.

Jim, you do not need functional pods. You can use your favorite developer to develop type 55 negative, here's note from awhile ago:

I do miss Type 55. I miss that liquidy look. I want to experiment with Acros and other fine-grained films in monobaths to see if I can get something close.

In the mean time, here are a few from college, the last time I shot Type 55:

Does type 52 count? I never did much with 55, but loved the way 52 handled highlights as in this photo of money plant. It did some interesting things with the wall texture, too.

Can't remember if I posted this one before. The film expired in 1981 and had all kinds of strange artifacts (the background was a piece of black velvet but it didn't render that way). I scanned the negative in color and liked the result so I left it like that. The exposure was three minutes due to the age of the film and reciprocity.

Toyo 45A, 210mm Sironar-N, Polaroid Type 55 (expired 1981).

Cool, like the spot (though I've never fully enjoyed the gas mask genre, but this ones fun).

I hadn't thought of it that way, but it does have that vibe. It is unpredictable, that's for sure.

Beautiful image !

Thanks, Dennis. Your shot of the house is amazingly detailed and tonally nuanced. It was shot on fresh Type 55, I take it? I have only shot long expired T55, and while I like the odd effects every now and again I long for a clean pull.

Hi Jonathan,
Thank you for your comment.
Yes, fresh 55 at the time many years ago. The feeling is mutual - I wouldn't mind a few pulls like yours, either ! I have an old box of 55 that I'm dying to try. I'm only afraid the pods may be dried up.
I was interested to read (in another post, thank you Victoria ! ) that the film could be developed in regular developer. Guess that will be my last resort.

Dennis

Wow that last one is amazing I love it the tunnel effect.

I wish I could even get my hands on just one type! not true I have one box a singular box of I believe it's 669 in my fridge, but who knows how it's been stored or how well it will expose, I'll have to try it it's certainly not stuff that I've had lying around for years like you guys...

I feel pretty lucky that I managed to get on the Polaroid bandwagon before it completely fell apart. The most I paid for a box of Type 55 was $65. I couldn't afford to buy it now if I wanted to. Expired 669 is great stuff. I think you'll like the results.

Type 51 was a bit of a sleeper film. Prices stayed much lower than Type 55 even though it produced the same negative, although the positive was worthless. I still have one box left just waiting for the right photos to present themselves....

When you consider that New55's target per-sheet price is $6.00, $200 for an expired box of Polaroid Type 55 isn't too bad. The problem is you're rolling the dice with regard to viability. I've bought enough film with dead pods for one lifetime, thanks. Regardless, I am happy to support the New55 Project if it gets close to production.

Steps:
1: Painted with light on Stine... on 4x5 pol neg.
2: took a lot of images on 35 mm film of Stine making hand signals.
Manipulated the negative (scratching - adding tape (smudged with my finger prints)
3: cut out and taped some small negatives on the big one...
4: made a darkroom print
5: made that image into a Bromoil Print...

If you don't have a polaroid 545 holder, then you will need one to shoot the film. You can pick them up cheap on ebay. They will fit most any 4x5 back, spring or graflok. Good luck!

...If you don't have a polaroid 545 holder, then you will need one to shoot the film. You can pick them up cheap on ebay. They will fit most any 4x5 back, spring or graflok...And, after exposing the sheets in your Polaroid holder, you'll need to have them E-6 processed. That's a box of tungsten-balanced transparency film packets, not Polaroid instant film. Fuji made the master roll (it was the original Fujichrome 64T), then shipped it in that form to Polaroid, where it was cut and assembled into packets compatible with Polaroid sheet holders.

I'm not sure whether many color labs today are familiar with how to open the packets and get sheets separated for processing. Also, if memory serves, this film's dimensions were slightly larger than those of standard 4x5 sheets, requiring special hangers, which labs probably no longer have.

Well, I don't think the film is so big they will need a hangar. :D

Sal Santamaura
19-Feb-2015, 09:43
Well, I don't think the film is so big they will need a hangar...Most E-6 labs use dip-and-dunk processors that employ hangers on racks. Standard 4x5 hangers, if I remember correctly, are too small for the Professional Chrome sheets. Of course, anyone doing their own E-6 in a Jobo (or the unusual commercial lab using a Jobo like Prauss) will have no size constraint with this film.

A much greater issue is likely to be the fact that Professional Chrome hasn't been sold for decades and is almost certainly in bad shape.
