I was loading film holders the other day thinking, "Damn I miss 4x5 film packs!" When Kodak still Tri-X in a film pack, I rarely used sheet film because the film packs were so convenient and easy to use.

I also missed the time when film and chemistry was relatively inexpensive.
My grandfather owned a studio for over 50 years and tells me stories all the time about what the business was like.
Those were very good times. 100 sheet boxes of 4x5 were so cheap they would shoot hundreds of them at a wedding.

Kirk - I miss the old Zone VI paper too. But my recent experiments with the new MCC

I liked Ilford Multigrade FB a lot. Then they split the product into a warmtone and coldtone. For my taste, the warmtone is a little too warm and the coldtone is too stark an unemotional.

Still, Ilford FB warmtone glossy is a great product.

I guess it is more of a service, but how about 4x5 C-41 processing at your local lab? No one in Asheville offers C-41 processing for 4x5.

That reminds me of something I hadn't thought of in a long time - going to your local drugstore to buy darkroom chemicals. Hard to believe today, when there's hardly even a local camera store around that sells them, but darkroom chemicals used to be a standard item on the shelves of many drugstores - like this one (photo made with a Deardorff 8x10 camera and cropped). And after you bought your chemicals you could sit down at the counter and get a nice lunch. Those were the days.

Yup, Agfapan 25 in all sizes, and Type 55, and Kodachrome 35mm, and High Speed Infra-red in 35 and 4x5.

One product that no-one else seems to have mentioned yet is Ilford Galerie paper. It's been a while, so I no longer remember the number, but the semi-matt finish was a really exceptional paper - deep blacks with just enough of a warm neutral tone, that I have not seen since.

I'm sad that Fotoman came and went before I could get my finances in sufficient order to get a couple. (I'm really much more fond of scale focus that I am of climbing under a darkcloth.) Especially the 120/8 on 5x7 they had in special deals for a while.

The Nikon-mount version of the 12mm Voigtlander that sold out its one run just before there was a DSLR that could manage persistent mirror-up to let you use it.

Tech Pan, although my freezer is still pretty well stocked.

Labs doing affordable optical enlarging. I mean, I'm mostly fine with scanning, but it can't really wring eveything out of Tech Pan.

Kodak E100VS in 8x10; I only ever got to shoot one beautiful box (if any has some they wish to sell, PMs welcomed), although I am glad it remains available (but for how long?) in 4x5 and that I did stockpile some in Readyloads.

Local labs that can properly process and print true B&W film, as well as any type film or format other than 135 C-41; being able to process any 120 or sheet format film without resorting to mail order. Similarly, to obtain chemistry locally.

The opportunity to have ever shot Kodachrome in a format larger than 135.

The wisdom, wit, and kindness of Ted Harris, and the opportunity to have actually met him in person, though I will always treasure his Canham 5x7 as a memory of my contacts with him.

I have given some thought to this, and appreciate the question. In fifty-plus years as a photographer, I have seen many of my favorite materials discontinued, and fine equipment suffer a similar fate.

However, growing with the refinements of the medium, and acknowledging the inevitable changes, I can not say that I miss anything. I can only speak for silver photography, and its evolution in my lifetime; a time where it was paramount to my livlihood and my artistic expression.

Many here, have witnessed the loss of discontinued products; but there have always been materials to fuel the endeavor, as long as the passion burns. I believe that the demise of old, and birth of new silver materials will be a pattern well into the future.

Somewhere along the way someone mentioned Ilford Galerie. It's still being produced; at least Freestyle still has it. This is assuming there wasn't some earlier, better version.

I miss Kodak Polycontrast Fine Art. Really nice stuff.

All this reminds me of a joke they tell here in Charleston (we're known for living in the past to some degree).

Q: How many Charlestonians does it take to change a light bulb?
A: Three. One to change the bulb, one to pour the bourbon, and one to comment on how much better the old one was.

Thank you, Sal

I already tried this paper, wich is remarkable, no doubt! Adox sent me some sheets even before they release the product, to colect my opinion about it. I think it is even better than the original Agfa MCC 111. However, I still miss agfa paper, because it was much cheaper than Adox, Rollei Vintage 111 or other similar papers.

Now I'm using Fomabrom 111 wich is a nice FB paper and delivers good results as long as we don't forget to tone it with 1:20 selenium. It is really cheap.

I really miss Royal-X Pan in 4x5. I used to use it in my Technika V, hand held, for candids of my shipmates (I'm retired USN). Loaded in a Grafmatic, exposed at an EI of 1600 (sometimes a bit higher) and souped in Diafine the combination can't be matched with todays products. Prints up to 3 to 4 times enlargement were grainless, contrast was well-controlled and tonality was uniquely smooth.

I couldn't deal with the smoking in bed and their Deadhead friends. Anyway my first real taste of LF was to carry 5 double holders on a half day trip yesterday. Astia is still available in 120 and sheets, no? At least Freestyle has it in 4x5 and lists it as out of stock in 120 but expected from distributor Sep 2, and B&H lists it as "temporarily" out of stock in 4x5. Adorama lists it in both 120 and 4x5.

Toss-up between Kodak E-Dupe Ektachrome and Kodak Commercial 4127.

The former was the perfect 35-mm slide duplicating film. Predictable, controllable and consistent once the settings were figured out.

The latter was ideal for copying negatives on unstable medium, such as nitrate from the 1920's. It was a sheet film, estar base, ortho, and not much faster than paper. Under red light, original negatives were contact printed to result in a wrong-facing positive from which any number of printable negatives could be made. The deteriorating original became an archival image.

Realizing that this is an extremely labor-intensive process that is now accomplished with digital scanning, there are a still few choice images that I would like to commit directly to stable film.

I was just looking through my collection of Camera and Darkroom mags the other day, I miss it as well. In fact, I miss many of the mags. The former Shutterbug comes to mind as well. Camera Arts is another mag I miss.I use digital, on a basic level, but I "HATE" what it has done to art of photography. I can't help but get pissed off when I go into Barnes and Noble and see nothing new and interesting on the photography shelf anymore. I know people disagree with me on this issue, but call it the way I see it, digital photography has had a major negative effect on creativity. When I look at the digital magazine rack I get sick. Anyway, what I really , really miss so much is all the wonderful Polaroid products.

It was a sad day for me when they went under, although we still have Rodinal and Neutol so I guess that is something. I do miss the film though. Uh-oh. How old is your Optima? I have some frozen 4x5 from the late 90s. Might ought to shoot it ASAP and hope for the best.

Optima was nice, and Ultra 50 in 35mm was unreal, but Portra 400 is also a wonderful general use film and Ektar 100 close to Ultra 50 in saturation. I always found Ultra 50 difficult to print on Kodak papers when I was printing RA4. The prints I got from machines on Fuji paper generally looked better than anything I could do by hand, which was not true of any other film. I think it was just a better fit for Fuji paper. Ironic, now that Fuji sheets are readily available and Kodak is only in rolls or cut down by someone else or old stock from ebay.

I remember that 15-20 years ago it retailed for $6 a sheet, which I thought was a lot at the time, but it was such a great thing. If The Impossible Project or FUJI or someone else decided to manufacture it again and sell it for under $10 a sheet, that too would be a great thing.

It's still available, but it's almost always wasted on the young.

Roger, it expired in '07 and has been frozen since. I can correct for the shifts in Photoshop easy enough but I doubt you could print it adequately.

Ugh. I suppose it's time to try it out and see what happens then, at least. I also have some 120 and, I think, 220 I bought in a big box o' film on eBay that was supposedly frozen since new. I just shot a roll of 2003 (I think it was) Astia from that box and it was absolutely perfect, but maybe it keeps better than Optima.

Oh well, I'm actually happy with Portra 160/400 and Ektar 100 while I can get them, but just happened to still have the Optima 4x5 and at $3 a sheet for new film, "already have it paid for ten years ago" is SO much better. ;)

kodak txp tmx tmy2 :(

But all those are still available.

Yeah, I know you're probably talking about 8x10. :(

It's sad that I have to add additional products since this thread started but now I'd add Ilfochome and Astia. Someone in August said Astia and I pointed out it was still available in 120 and 4x5, but that was August and this is now - no more. Someone also said Cibachrome and someone said Ilfochrome was still available - that was then... I think you can still buy some of the last run of Ilfochrome if you can afford it but it's exorbitantly priced and going away. :(

Maybe, maybe not. Way too many variables to predict.
