Thank you both. The sky reflections were a bit of a surprise, at least in terms of how much blue was in the rocks. It was not something I perceived there, but the area was in deep shadow as it was getting later in the afternoon. Sometimes the rocks along the shore are a little brighter in b&w images than I remember, so perhaps it's just a general tendency to reflect blue that I have not noticed!

Will continue to look for such images in the future. In fact, I have some couple sheets of Portra ready to develop this week from the GA coast...

Thanks Pat. The hexagon is not cropped as close in the original print. Taken with a 250 Zeiss Tessar, my only good lens at the time. Considered a long focal length for 4x5, but worked for close-ups with the 17" bellows.

Thank you, Jim. Indeed, Isopan was a wonderful film developed in Pyro. At the time, early 1950's, I was making 4x5 contact prints on Defender Varigam.

Fred Picker loved Varigam. It was made by DuPont, no?

In any case, after it was discontinued for the consumer market, Fred learned that it was still being made for the government, and offered to buy a full production run. They turned him down. Too bad.

Hi Bruce,

Yes, you are correct. Defender Photo made Varigam until the company was purchased by DuPont after WWII. I believe the Defender name was still used in the early 1950's on the DuPont product.

I took a hike with my Crown Graphic today, and wished I’d had either more skill with it, or a camera with more straightforward movements, or a lens with more coverage. Maybe I just need to practice more. This is with a Schneider Xenar 135/4.7, on HP5 in Pyrocat.

Several wonderful photographs in the Fort. Did you have any difficulties photographing using a 4x5 at the there?

Pat Kearns
18-Apr-2020, 17:09
Thank you Alan, I'm always drawn to photograph bright white subjects and Fort Barrancas has great subject matter. The Fort is part of the National Park Service and is on the Pensacola Naval Air Station. The public is allowed to visit the Naval Air Museum, the Pensacola Lighthouse, and the Fort. The Fort is accessible to the public with an admission charge by the National Park Service. There isn't any photography restrictions nor did I have any difficulties using a 4x5 except for the occasional tourist. I advise wearing shoes not sandals and long jeans because of the grass is covered with sand spurs. When I got back to the car it took about 20 minutes to scrape the sand spurs off the bottom of my shoes and the legs of my jeans.

Thank you jtomasella. I said in an earlier response that I like photographing white subject matters. The light and shadows brought out the full tonal range. The light was starting to change quickly and the brilliance of the white disappeared soon after I made the exposure.

A little dot of white makes an interesting B&W form go all crazy abstract. Part design, part imagination on the viewer's part. Click and make the photos bigger; do you have a preference for either photo? Inside the boathouse at Alford Lake it was very dark, so I used a small flashlight in the scene to focus the camera. I could see if looked cool, so I made a photo on purpose before removing the flashlight. By leaving in the led flashlight, it receives a bit of inspiration from George's Seeley's 1907 "Firefly" pictorialist photograph (you'll never find a nice scan of it online, but it's in the Camera Work compilation book if you have that) with the later modernist experiments in abstraction. Photographed with my speed graphic, 9" Gundlach Hyperion soft focus lens, and 4x5 tmax 400 film.

I shattered my ground glass on an excursion to a state park the other day, and ground a new one in a hurry before going back. I couldn't make any images on that trip for another reason, but I saw the dried out grinding media left on the other piece of glass and thought it was interesting enough to photograph.

David, thank you. I have recently been going through some forgotten early work from the 50's. At the time, this one was a puzzle to many viewers. What is it? Is it an aerial photo? Hi Daniel. No, those Urell film hangers found a new home decades ago. They sat outside my father's darkroom awaiting my discovery, forever immortalized in 1953.

Aero Ektar and 4x5 FP4+ film in pyrocat hdc

martiansea
21-Feb-2021, 12:53
Greetings everyone, here's one of my abstracts:
212997
I shot this on Kodak Ektar 100 color 4x5 with my Cambo SC, Schneider Symmar convertible 210mm f5.6 lens. I then scanned it with an Imacon Flextite and edited in Photoshop. The editing I did was to turn it into a tritone with different colors put into different tonal regions. This was then separated and printed on inkjet films, approximately 22x30" in size. These film separations were then used to make a polychrome gum print. The colors you see in the final print aren't necessarily what I was seeing in photoshop, since the colors of the gum depend on what pigments I put in them. So, what you're seeing is a multilayered gum print made of blue, yellow and orange layers. Each color has multiple layers and some heavy brushing was done on the final blue layer to get the interesting texture. The original colors of the film had no bearing on the final print; I could have just as easily done this with B&W film.
This is the first really large gum print that I did. It's on Arches Aquarelle, 22x30.

Thanks Dugan, and Michael -

Drafted in 1963, my infantry training was at Fort Ord. The base was closed in 1994, and I returned in 2006, making this photograph from inside the old base laundry facility. The place I recalled, all spit and polish, was now in a state of decay. I spent the entire day photographing there.
