Thanks! That is an old one. Actually, it sat forgotten in the film holder for a few YEARS before I had it processed, hence the slight color shift. (Don't ask how that happened.) The corrugate was closer to a neutral galvanized color, of course.

Preston,

I'm flattered, thanks for saying so! I credit discovering this thread, though. I hadn't thought much about the shot but when I was scrounging around looking for "abstract" images to post it made me look at this one in a whole new light.

As I was heading out of town one day last month, I did a double take. In one of those weird little chunks of waste land formed by highways and off-ramps, someone had strung a line between 2 spindly trees and hung a sheet. On my way back I found a safe place to pull over used up a couple of sheets of film.
It's not there anymore.

Shot yesterday. I've had these pizza pans for nearly twenty years and make pizza at home once a week at least. They must have been criss-crossed by a pizza cutter hundreds of times. I'll need to try this again since it wasn't exactly what I had in mind--pre-visualization can be tough--but at least it's a start. Shot outside in natural (overcast) light.

Distorted Tank, Ravenswood

Gelatin-silver photograph on Agfa Classic MCC III VC FB photographic paper, image size19.4cm X 24.4cm, from a 4x5 Tmax 100 negative exposed in a Tachihara 45GF field view camera fitted with a Schneider Super Angulon 90mm f8 lens.

The lens was very close to the tank in order to exclude the surroundings and reinforce the tank's abstract qualities. The poor Tachihara was at the limits of its tilts and swings but the bellows didn't tear and the ground glass image looked sort of coherent. Stopping the lens down to f45 was necessary to avoid hurtful blur but it dragged diffraction into the mix and the final photograph is borderline unsharp; but only just.

Thanks, David. Like I said above I am hoping to try again, but I feel encouraged by the overall idea. I might try a closer-in shot of just the texture on the face of one pan. We'll see. I'm sure I will post my future results here.

Thanks Jonathan, Harley. I originally planned to make this head on from a distance but I discovered once I got closer that to do so I would have had to stand in the middle of a freeway. Obviously that wasn't an option so I ended up angling my camera up at this crazy angle. I kind of like it though. Sometimes I think using a view camera can make one unnecessarily limit one's compositions. I mean, there's no rule that says the camera HAS to be level, right? :)

The broken nautilus is a nice "run fast in the other direction" from the type-a personality photos of perfect nautilus with perfect still life lighting and perfect composition with high end camera gear, which is sort of the silver successor of a bowl of perfect fruit in perfect north window light, painted perfectly. It thus carries more abstract meaning than a normal photo attempt of a nautilus shell.

It also seems to have some sort of rorschach test with the black hole and odd lighting. Looks like a maggot with a coffee ground or paint flake on it.

Thanks to you both. It's funny, but the image was not planned at all. I did see the light striking some of the glasses and things on the shelves, but I first focused on some tea cups on the shelf below. I couldn't frame up anything worthwhile, so I raised the tripod head and started focusing on the glasses. Looking at the digital photo with the red rectangle it makes it seem more "zeroed in" and purposeful than it was. Partly just luck. It's what you get when playing around and keeping an open mind!

And for the record, I quite enjoyed the shot of you in your basement in front of the TV. In fact--no joke--it featured in my dreams last night. In the dream the photo came to life but the person to get up out of that chair was a child, but it was still you, if you know what I mean, and when I asked the child/you about the technical details of the photo he/you just stared at me quizzically as if he didn't know. Austin,

Sorry to hear about your back. Not an injury compatible with LF work, that's for sure. Glad to give you a laugh, but that is exactly how I remember the dream, or the fragment of it that remained once I awoke. It was so vivid, too, and cool in a way. I was looking at that photo, but it was on a wall or something, not on the computer, and then suddenly I was standing in the basement room about where the camera would have been when the 'kid' got up from the chair. Very David Lynch-esque without being scary.

And clearly, you know what you're doing, at least photographically. As for the man-child bit, aren't we all?

More sheet, in color this time, perhaps less abstract with the addition of some background. Shot last week but just now back from the lab. My color correction skills leave much to be desired, so there remains something off color-wise, but so be it. My eyes are blurry from trying to balance it in PS.

I cross-processed Provia once, the older emulsion though. It came out crazy, the sky was bright neon pink!! I like the colors Jonathan, they are unique, from the xprocess, but still close enough to reality to just look interesting rather than strange. That's the best balance for that kind of processing, IMO.

Bryan,

I don't do much cross processing, but this film was so expired that I figured why not try. The last round of old Provia I had processed straight E-6 came out with mottled color shifts anyway, so I was curious to see what the cross processing did to it. I agree, the colors are close enough to reality without being cartoonish, but it did make true color balancing almost impossible. I'm OK with that.

I posted this same image a few months ago shot on expired T-Max 400, but at the time I also exposed a stray sheet of Tech Pan. (I acquired about fifteen sheets, well expired, in a box lot of film a couple of years ago.) I've only shot Tech Pan once before and it was a disaster. I waited so long to process this negative because I really didn't know how. I use HC-110 almost exclusively and few people seem to recommend it with TP, but I decided to try a very weak dilution and little agitation. It seemed to work out fine. Spot metering indicated a pretty low SBR so the bump in contrast serves the image well, I think. Tech Pan, true to its reputation, appears grainless even when the scan is viewed at 100%.

i especially like the way the tones reverse on the top and bottom halves.

Thanks. That's what helped me settle on the final framing for the shot. I kept moving the camera forward and back, up and down, until I saw this odd kind of symmetry with the bottom half almost being a negative of the top.

Austin & Clay: thanks. It is another one of my wife's candle holders, a Fostoria "faery lamp," so she tells me. It's a big globe that you put a candle in and it casts wonderful fractured shadows in a wide circle. At first I put a candle in it and tried to capture that aspect (thinking I might get something akin to Austin's "lantern in the desert" shot), but I couldn't get what I wanted in that regard so I went for the abstract instead.

jp
16-Jul-2013, 12:12
You can wander about 90% of the base as it's back under local control. There is an area in the NE corner, where apparently nukes were kept, which is off limits, and a building or two have been re-used for business now, but it's pretty much no fences have the place to yourself. I'll post some more photos over the next few weeks to my flickr photostream if you want that diversion.

I have heard many stories of people yarning about how bad the winters are up there. I noticed the sign posts are a little higher and the roads a little wider on account of snow pile planning. This area, and a little portion of North Dakota get some of the coldest weather in the lower 48. Thank you for serving there.

I bought a WWII USAF aerial camera a couple of years ago whose magazine was still loaded with film. I separated the unexposed side of the roll, which I am still playing around with, from the side that had already run through the camera. I was certain that the "exposed" side of the roll would be blank from people advancing the film over the years as they played with the camera, but on the off-chance there were actual images there I developed a five inch clipped section of the film tonight. It's not blank, but there is no discernible image, either.

I have to say that I am a sucker for the textures that cosmic rays, heat and time etch on unexposed film. The fact that digital doesn't degrade, at least not in such a random and organic way, I take to be one of its shortcomings.

Yes! Though this wasn't the type of shot I had in mind for the Tech. I had gone out to the mill to shoot some portraits of the workers before they got off work, but almost everyone had already knocked off for the day. I didn't even have a tripod on me, hence the monopod. Normally I'd likely have stopped down to f/32 and did a longer exposure but it worked out I think:

This same sheet has been hanging on the back porch for over a year. We use it to keep the sun out of the dining room in the summer, and each time it gets pulled out along the clothes line and retracted the placement of the folds changes and....I can't resist.

The SBR on this was only two stops. I tried N+2 development but should have pushed farther, I think.

Nah, I think you nailed it!

I "nailed it" with a little help from curves in PS! The negative was bound to be flat because the subject was, but I think it could have used a bit more "snap" from extra development. Having grown up with analog processes I feel like the ease with which Photoshop allows me to correct my flawed negatives is cheating somehow. That's BS, I know, since masks, dodging and burning, etc. have always been part of the printing process, but the closer I can get my negatives to the way I want them before I start manipulating them the better.

Thanks, Harley. For better or worse I'm certain this isn't the last photo of the sheet I will take. In fact, it's still hanging there and the sun is out....be right back. :)

....and you thought I was kidding.

Different light, different camera, different lens, different film, different exposure, different development. Same old sheet.

Both of your last two sheet pictures are wonderful Jonathan. I've been meaning to photograph the curtains here in my office in a similar way, but the light is only right for about ten minutes a day and I keep missing my window (no pun intended). Maybe tomorrow I'll set up beforehand and wait.

I love the small diamond of light on the little grate near the bottom. Excellent detail.

From Acadia National Park on 4x5 TMY-2 with a 300mm lens at f/96. I call this one "Wolf Spirit".

The sideways, one-eyed, wolf-like face in the center of this tree bark composition grabbed my eye from quite a distance away.
