cheap and works well for both scanning my negatives and printing directly in palladium without having to make 2 different negatives. being a pyro formulation it does a good job at taming the highlights, something needed down here in Texas. additionally, it was developed by our own Sandy King and I get a kick out of saying when I have any problems with it I just email the inventor :D

i just got around to printing these from the "jan 23 shoot". (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?t=57868)

1st one if George. it is an 11x14 contact print (digital camera image). the film was Efke 25....loaner film. so i did not have my times down all that well. a bit under. 18 inch voigtlander petzval lens wide open at about f3.5 shot with strobes.

the second and 3rd are 8x10 contact prints. FP4. i just started using this film (i could not find my trust foma100 that day) a voigtlander 10 inch petzval from 1853 wide open at about f3.2 with strobes.

Tried my 300mm Perscheid @f/6.5 in my lounge. This was painted with light. Nowhere near soft, and no glowing highlights. This is obviously not the way to use this lens... Maybe wide open would work better, who knows unless I try again... Maybe the glowing happens only in normal daylight enveloping the scene and subject? Oh well...

The best glow happens when an important, in focus, highlight is set against a darker tone. The edge of a face, for example, against dark fabric will give a nice glow if your lens has that capability. Its also best to limit the lines to a few graphic strokes in the image. A busy tree branch isn't really enhanced with halos around each twig. But a strong simple shape like a pear can be made to sing with one highlight that shows some glow.
These are opinions, of course, but the point is that its the subject matter and lighting need to considered along with the maximum aperture. :)

How do you folks determine exposure for your portraits? Do you spot meter and zone system only on face? Do you just use average scene metering? Do tell!!!

Frank Petronio
12-Feb-2010, 23:33
Meter your hand under the same light as your subject, provided they are the same color as you. The entire range of humanity will fit within a five-stop range, Indians and Mexicans are Middle Grey Zone V; Finns and Swedes are Zone VII; Kenyans are Zone III.

Country Clubs are all Zone VI.

cjbroadbent
13-Feb-2010, 06:18
..Finns and Swedes are Zone VII...
Given the chance, do you compress the lighting tone range then expand the range in post-production, i.e. shoot soft, print hard? Or do you light hard and print soft?
I have always done the latter - fill 3 1/2 stops under (4x5 example below) , but nowadays with the scanner I find it easier to do the former, holding onto the highlights on a forehead and pushing the shadows off the edge. That means shooting with fill light only 1 1/2 stops under, (the negative looks wish-washy I would be ashamed let anyone else print it).

I was just trying to push a few PC buttons but yes, skin color does matter and most American photographers end up thinking "white" most of the time.

But in general I do have flatter negatives for scanning than darkroom printing, I'd probably be burning prints and using Grade V paper with a lot of my film these days.

Per his question about exposure, I used to be a Zone System zealot but in a studio I'd fall back to using an incident flash meter like most other people. Nowadays I use a dslr's histogram and a bit of intuition and voodoo to figure out my exposures but the voodoo part took a few thousand negatives to learn.

Thus emphasizing the gradient on the face and arms. Gives a wonderful 3D effect. A really nice picture. Bravo!!

Thanks fella's. Coming from you that means a lot to me!

One hand to pull the dark slide out of the holder, one hand for the Eddie two-dark-slides-shutter-method and one to trigger the flash with my meter during the one second exposure... :-) It felt kind of adventurous.

I doubt anyone could make a bad portrait of this lady... :-)

Stephane, the light is coming from too low, creating a disturbing and un-natural shadow on the left eye and left side of the nose.

When you set up lighting, keep in mind that in nature it's very seldom that the light source is below eyes level...

Not a beautiful girl by a long shot (Where do these guys find em'?).
Mark came by to borrow a mandolin to take measurements for a woodworking project, and I happened to have my 8x10 set up needing a test subject to make 5x8 images using the mask I made for the back. So, 2 vertical negatives were shot on each sheet, using a 300mm Commercial Ektar wide open at 6.7.
It took a little more attention to keep track of the sheet exposures, but I was pleased with how it worked. This gives me some more options for lens usage, not to mention saving on film costs.

Hi! thanks :) I just slightly darkened the left part.
The Caltar is a great lens, very sharp for sure, but this particular picture is not that sharp because of the continuous light (650W only) and long exposure time. I'm lucky that that the model could be that stable.
It's always the same dilemma, and I can't make up my mind: very smooth/soft light wide open with long exposure and iso 400 or strobe at f16 on iso 100...

Tomorrow I have a female model, I'll try both :)

Vincent

The arms came out a bit blown in the scan (the neg has more info). Other than that I'm fairly happy with how it turned out.

Testing new combiplan, new film and new developer.
Txp@250 1+1+100 Tanol 9min 24 deg C. Despite of meager "against light table with dslr, scanning", the negs are seriously detailed and sharp with highlights going on forever =) I'm going to like this combo..

Anders

Looks great! I might have to try that developer too!

Wow! I especially love that second one - how did you control the indoor/outdoor lighting levels? That window view looks so deep and threatening...

Robert, sorry it is studio shot, actually 3 light setup - 10in Fresnel + 2Kw/s pack, 4in elipsoudal spot + 1Kw/s and gridded 22in beauty dish.
You may get hint of light setup in model eye catch lights. Shutter time 1/30 which balanced window with flash.

Using spot meter instead of dslr in situation like this may present serious difficulties:)
