Anyone know anything about dye sub printers such as what is the quality of output and how long do the images last before they start to fade?

Looking at a DNP DS 80 for quick colour prints.

I have used a Canon Selphy dye sub printer for about 4 years now. I have not noticed any fading in the images it produces. While the resolution isn't as high as a fancy inkjet, the image quality is very nice, as it is basically continuous tone output rather than dot patterns like we see with inkjets. It is actually an older technology than inkjet. I use it for all my color snapshot sized prints, and I use an epson 7600 for the big prints.

My Canon was <$100. What you're looking for is pretty expensive; is there any way to obtain a sample print first?

I guess that would be the sensible thing to do.
