I'm looking for a smaller standard backpack for day tripping. I use Domke inserts when needed to carry my 4x5 equipment being a Graphic body, 2 lenses, 2-4 filters, meter and <10 holders. I prefer a bag that sits and opens from the top instead of a calm shell, lay on the ground design like some of the photo backpacks. I know some of these packs on the market have organizers inside that split up the main compartment, which won't work for me, but I do need outside bottle pockets. It's hard to tell what's what just thru pictures on the internet. Some of the Northface packs seem nice, but not all models are available locally for review. Under a $100 is my price range. Any suggestions?

Wayne, do you have an REI, EMS, Campmor or some other backpacking, hiking camping store near you? When I got my pack from REI, I actually brought my kit into the store laid it out in front of the backpack specialist (serious hardcore backpacker) and said "find me a bag this stuff will fit in or be strapped to the side". I got a ruck, a bit more than what your limit is but there these stores have all kinds of bags. To be honest backpacks are like shoes. I've spent a large amount of time wearing a pack and what feels good to me makes others cringe and vice versa. Get to one of these stores, bring your gear and start trying them on. then buy the one that is comfortable and fits your budget. Packs are something I would not suggest you buy sight unseen, unless you really really know what you are buying. Keep in mind with really hard usage most rucks will last at least two years. I seem to get about 3 out of mine before the frame and/or fabric starts to fade away. Something that quickens the death of a ruck is the weight you put in it. If it is not rated to hold all of the gear you want, the frame or fabric will fail quickly. It will hold the volume, but not the weight.

Have a Happy New Year!

I just got a nothing special $39 backpack at EMS that holds all that, albeit in a jumble but I wrap everything in lenswraps, etc. mine is the EMS "Esker".
