I'm looking at a listing and was wondering what would you pay for a Symmar-S 300mm (with shutter, no lens board) in what looks like fairly good condition?

I've read that even the single coated Symmar-S 300mm is a crackerjack of a lens and very sharp. Would you agree? I'll be using it on a 4x5 view camera for portraits mainly, and truth be told, probab;y close to fairly wide open most of the time.

Thanks for any advise you could share.

Remember that the lens comes in a Copal 3 shutter, its a big piece of glass and it weighs in at 1160g. Its recommended for 8x10. Just saying.

Big it is, and a nice sharp lens... but for portraits it might be only partially satisfactory. Many people look better with "soft", not "sharp".

I use a 300mm Symmar-S in my studio for product photos, and it is great. Very sharp, good coverage.

I decided to hold off on the 300, even though it went for a nice price of US$204.

I might get a conventional 250mm, or a Fujinon soft focus lens instead.

Thanks guys.
