View Full Version : LF Supplies in Europe

I will be in Europe for a while - Austria, UK, Greece, Spain, and France. Can anyone recommend the best way to obtain supplies like film and parts as well as labs to do quality E6 processing of 4x5?
I figure my options are:
- Bring everything with me (ugh)
- Find a good european supplier and have stuff shipped to me as I go
- Have a few places that I can drop in on and resupply.
Any suggestions are hugely appreciated.
Thanks!

For mail order of film and other supplies I can recommend Nordfoto in Germany: www.nordfoto.de. I believe they ship all over Europe. Order via Internet, and pay with Paypal. Credit card payments are not as common in Europe as they may be in the U.S., quite a few mail order shops won't accept credit cards. Usually Nordfoto has common 4x5 film in stock, not too many shops in Europe do this anymore.

fotoimpex is the only real choice here in europe, there range is large and shipping is cheap and fast
http://www.fotoimpex.de/shop/
There are plenty of other EU suppliers and I say that as a satisfied Fotoimpex customer, but it's sometimes it's easier to buy in the country you in at the time.
Credit card payments are just as common in Europe as the US & the rest of the word - in fact they are the norm, I've had no problems with German, Belgian, French, Dutch, Italian, Croatian etc companies of any type. Some small companies may not be registered for credit cards but that's unusual, the few that aren't are usually one man small part time businesses and they exist the world over.
Silverprint in London, are excellent in London, Spain has some excellent suppliers. But carry what yopu can to start with.

Thanks everyone, this is great! The name of a Spanish place would be superb if anyone has it handy.

The cretins at Fotiimpex refused to sell me film, despite European law, this was over the phone, e-mails were ignored. They told me to contact a second rate ourfit in this country. That outfit have now disappeared from the face of the earth. Stuff Photoimpex.
Fomafoto are a good company to deal with. Silverprint and Ag are both highly recommended.
I don't buy anything from or produced in Spain for so many reasons...............don't ask.
Enjoy your trip.

In France try http://www.negatifplus.com/ - they have limited sheet film (Provia and FP4 and HP5) but do processing and shipping. I use www.dupon.com (http://www.dupon.com) in Bordeaux - which is closer than the one in Paris to me (although for large prints they have them done in Paris anyway).
I have never had a problem with credit card or paypal orders - I've been living in Switzerland and France since 1997. Europe isn't as backward as some may believe.
If you get to Paris I suggest visiting Le Grand Format camera shop at 54, boulevard Beaumarchais 75011 http://www.legrandformat.com/GFweb/GFsommaire.html (http://www.legrandformat.com/GFweb/GFsommaire.html)
Cheers and bon voyage, :cool:

You have Fotocasion in Madrid or foto R3 in Bilbao.
http://www.fotocasion.es/
http://www.foto-r3.com/ - BW exhaustive supplier
Have a very well time in Europe !
If you're in London and you're desperate, there are a number of Calumet stores that usually stock film and supplies. Quality E6 processing I'd have to say "hold onto your film".
No hopes for good or fast processing here in the UK... but if you take a long trip out toward Poland, go to Warsaw, I know an awesome 27/4 lab there though!

As far as Spain goes, like my colleagues said:
Casanova Foto (Barcelona) will supply you film (expensive). http://casanovafoto.com/
Arpi Foto (Barcelona) also sells film although I see little of it every time I go back. http://www.arpi.es
I get my goods at Foto R3 (I thought they were in Gijón not Bilbao). They take long to process and ship orders, at least in my experience. Sometimes they won't even answer to emails but they're cheap and they carry stuff others don't. http://www.foto-r3.com/
Foto R3 takes PayPal and credit cards. I think Germany does not usually take credit cards (at least on eBay they usually don't, but that could be for private sellers only).
I'd forget about having film processed anywhere, take it home were you know you'll have it done the way you like.
If you have trouble finding stores or communicating with suppliers in Spanish, drop us a line and we'll try to help.
btw, keep your equipment at sight all the time. Spain is a very safe country (you won't get shot by cops while meassuring with a spotmeter) but pick pockets are very active in tourist places during the summer.
Have fun!

Hello from France
Regarding a list of E6 labs processing large format slides, you can download this pdf document, it is a compilation of labs actually used by French readers and contributors to the MF/LF web sites http://www.galerie-photo.com and the forum http://www.galerie-photo.info
The list is here with several addresses in France as well as Belgium (Brussels and Antwerpen), Germany (Freiburg-im-Breisgau just across the Rhine) Switzerland (Lausanne just across the Jura) and Spain (Madrid)
Have a good trip !

It's a reply to old thread, but it's still informative:
Yes, if you buy from UK. Otherwise they'll ship to you only if your order is above 100 quid!! At least that's what it was like when I last tried to order from them (and I'm still steaming slightly).
Enjoy your European trip.

I use a good and pretty cheap (in European terms) lab for sheetfilm/rollfilm E-6 in the UK: Profolab Imaging in Weymouth.
I'm currently in R. of Ireland. Last batch I mailed to them cost me £31 for 8 sheets of 4x5" and 2x120s. incl. postage back to Ireland. They also take PAYPAL, but they only process E-6 on Tuesdays. www.profolab.co.uk:
Unit 4, Surrey Close, Granby Industrial Estate, Weymouth, Dorset DT4 9TY. Ph 01305 774098 / Fax 01305 778746
Very good quality, too. They're also happy to process 5x7 and 8x10, but apparently don't do C41 anymore. Ask for Di.

Some labs in Germany, Austria and
Switzerland:
http://www.photonews.de/service/labore/index.php
translations may be useful:
Filmentwicklung = film processing
S/W = Black&White
Kleinbild = 35mm Film
Rollfilm = 120 mm Film
Planfilm = sheet film
Vergrößerung = enlarged print
Handabzüge = handmade print
Mietlabor = lab for rent
In Düsseldorf I can recommend:
www.hsldigital.de ( digital and also film, first choice for many proffessionals )
www.schwarzweiss-fotolabor ( run by Erika Vogel, very nice old lady, specialist for B&W)
www.grieger-online.de/en/about-us/contacts/ (top notch!)

If you need processing in Paris, Labo Image is great; very good quality, good prices (for paris) and great service from Ara & Joseph.
I haven't visited in three years, hopefully they're still open.

Some labs in Germany, Austria and
Switzerland:
http://www.photonews.de/service/labore/index.php
That's a good list which I'll keep for reference. On it, and near to me is;
Chromobyte
Kapellenstr. 34, 4052 Basel, Tel. 41(0)61 / 319 92 19, Website: www.chromobyte.ch
Filmentwicklung S/W, E6, C41 bis 8x10 inch. C-Print analog bis 24 x 30 cm,
S/W-Vergrößerungen PE bis 50 x60 cm, auf Anfrage auch Baryt.
I recommend them - nice people, good service, and there is an inexplicably warm feeling from being able to walk around the corner to buy a box of sheet film. I have also used Ars-Imago (http://www.ars-imago.ch/) for some mail order items (Tanol, for example), and have had good service from them too.
Hi: three places in Paris where you can buy LF films directly (they do have some stock):
Sels d'Argent
7 rue Taylor, 75010 Paris
opened from 2PM to 7PM Mon to Fri and 10AM-1PM + 2-7PM on Saturdays.
They even have some ULF Ilford films
http://www.selsdargent.com/
Prophot
7-39 rue Condorcet • 75009 Paris
Mon thru Sat: 9h30 - 12h30 • 13h30 - 18h
http://www.prophot.com/
Photostock (more MF than LF though, but the cheapest in Paris)
126, boulevard Serurier 75019 PARIS
Mon thru Sat
http://www.photostock.fr/
For gear, "Le Grand Format" on Bld beaumarchais was already mentionned, it's a small but very nice shop, beautiful and very friendly :)
As for labs, there are plenty.
For color, I found the highest quality at "Central Color" near the Champ Elysées:
http://www.central-color.com/infos_utiles.htm
In the center near Bastille you have Picto as well:
http://www.picto.fr/ou_bastille.htm
In B&W, Toros is just great:
http://toroslab.com/
Careful, these three are only open Mon thru Fri.

For B&W dev and prints, Stéphane Cormier 7, rue Taylor Paris 10° (same as Sels d'argent).
Mostly HC110, but also Rodinal, Acufine, Diafine upon request.
Excellent quality and very reasonable prices!
Stéphane is an extremely nice and talented guy.

In UK, I have used and recommend the following reputable suppliers of LF gear, parts and film (not processing):
-Robert White [URL="http://www.robertwhite.co.uk"]
-Mr Cad [URL="http://www.mrcad.co.uk"]
-Teamwork Digital (despite the name) [URL="http://www.teamworkphoto.co.uk"]
And in France, in addition to the many suppliers previously noted, I suggest two online stores for LF film and parts (not processing):
-Taos Photographic [URL="http://www.taosphotographic.com"]
-Adaflex [URL="http://www.adaflex.com"]
I have found all these to be fully reliable and responsive.

hopefuly not too late. here is a company I've dealt with multiple times:
http://www.macodirect.de/
Also, I have had film developed by a number of labs w/in Germany and here is a bit of advice. If the camera shop sells film chances are very high they have the ability to send out film for development. Depending on the size of the city/town/village...etc. will determine how fast that development will take. In Heidelberg, a local shop mails it out with the quote of "3-5" days time and I usually get it back within 2.
Have fun.

If you want E6 in London then go to either Genesis www.genesis-digital.net or Metro www.metroimaging.co.uk Both process E6, Genesis has 3 timed processes over the day and at Metro you can just drop in your film and then pick it up two hours later. Both on the outskirts of central London, both professional quality labs.
Enjoy your trip.
