Vuescan has allowed the "scan once. Edit latter" workflow for quite awhile. (The author says that Silverfast is the only program he's aware of that does this. While that might be true, he obviously hasn't looked into it very much.)

In addition, IT8 calibration is not a one size fits all type of thing. You need to use an IT8 target on the right emulsion for what you are scanning. For example, an IT8 target on ektachrome gives a significantly different result than one on fuji film, as anyone who's profiled various films would know.

If doing HDR scanning is your thing, then this article is for you. If not, then it didn't have much other use.
