yeah I do it but it is pretty rough.

Go into pro mode, configuration, then turn off any color correction. This will get it to recognize each half of the sheet of film you scan as the same color and not try and correct for anything, which would take TONS of time in post to try and match. Then just make sure everything is as dust free as you can get it, set up a ruler so the negative doesn't tilt as you move it across the bed to scan each half, and scan away. That's how I do it. That's how I will do it until I get a v700, that is.

A 4990 does it better and easier and faster.

I attended a scanning workshop and used both the epson 4990 and epson v750.

There was no decernable differences between the output from the two scanners.

A 4490 does not have 4x5 scanning abilities unless you stitch.

I too have used both a 700 and a 4990 for scanning, and I too cannot notice any discernible difference. I've examined comparison scans down to the pixel level, and there is almost no difference between the two machines. The only I've found is the difference in the ability to change to holder height for focusing, which with my 4990 I've accomplished with shims made from business cards.

For those of us who are frugal, you can get a 4990 for about $150 on the used market. I've output 20" x 25" lightjet prints from my 4990 scans and I think they are quite beautiful. You may consider "upgrading" from the 4490 to the 4990.

the problem is, I can't find any 4990.
I don't want buy 700, it is too expensive for me. I am doing mostly digital.
But I have nice set of 4x5, good lenses. Just trying to find something that help me be in touch with my old buddy - film.

Be patient. The 4990 scanners come along. I waited a long time. I gave up. I bought a different scanner. A few weeks later TWO 4990 scanners were listed for sale at this forum. Ask (Want to Buy) listing. They will come.

Epson 4870 also works for 4x5.
