View Full Version : In Praise of 5x7... Post'em !
After 5 years on LFPF this will always be my favourite thread and format. Thanks to Ken for starting it and getting me into 5x7. No bullshit just image sharing. Long may it last.

5x7 Delta 100 in D23 1:1, 210 Sironar S
Beautiful shot, David. I should have commented when you first posted it.
Delta and D23 seem to be made for each other - I've never used Delta.
I agree that 5x7 is a perfect format (maybe even 5x8 also). Again, I've never used 5x7, only 8x10 and 4x5.
I seem to be dragging the chain, as I've been getting back into LF these last three years and still haven't got a workable darkroom.
Photographs like this one are very inspiring - I'd better pull the finger out. Thanks,
Barry
I believe I like that one more than any other you have ever posted, David. Nice work.
Barry, I dont have darkroom either but have settled on an inexpensive jobo print drum and a changing tent. If I am making a silver print then its easy enough to make a contact at night (but not during the summer as the sun sets very late)

That's incredible, David, given all the B&W you do. I'm afraid I'm a bit fussy, as I like to be able to walk into a darkroom, close the door and get down to work. Over the years I've had at least three dedicated rooms like this, and am therefore spoilt. At the moment I use a bungalow as an offfice/darkroom and can only handle film with the windows heavily curtained at night during the two weeks of the month when there is no moon before midnight. Needless to say I find that very off-putting and so do very little. All I have to do is make a couple of removable plywood/mdf panels that I can put up, then I'll be able to work any hour of the day or night. So I have to pull my finger out, as I said. Anyhow, thanks again for sharing that lovely print.

I've tried a Jobo print drum on a motorized roller base, for 5x7 negs, and had had uneven development, as well as negatives slip out of place. Which drum are you using?
Nice work and I agree on how great 5x7 is. The contact prints are like jewels.
2830 with 3 clips to hold the negatives apart. I think a short pre-soak is a good idea with some films. I always use the maximum amount of developer that will fit in the cup/light trap of the drum, 400 ml. I dont have a roller base so spin by hand on water in the sink, which introduces randomness like a BTZS tube.

That randomness might be the key to breaking up the laminar flows I'm getting. Ahh, I think I figured out how to use those clips.

Thanks David. When I was making this photograph, a man pulled up in a pickup truck to see what I was doing. He said he checked on the property for the owners periodically, as they were no longer there. I got the impression that they were elderly and had had to move away some time prior. In any case, after talking to the man for awhile, he gave me his blessing, and asked if I'd send him a copy of the picture, so that he could get it to the owners. I said yes of course, and that is just what I'm going to do right now!

There was a tree in the way and I didn't like the way the writing looked from an angle. And honestly, what really drew me to the scene was the three dimensional letters leaning against the two dimension letters that were painted to look like three dimensional letters, to be rendered (by me) into a two dimensional picture. I find that sort of thing interesting. :) The "KODAK FUNERAL" was pretty hard to resist though.

I'm pretty sure they were taken off temporarily in order to paint the building. There were stacks of letters all around. I can't say it didn't cross my mind though. Who wouldn't want a giant "E" for their wall?

I was messing around a week or two ago with a 65/5.6 Super Angulon on my B&J 5x7 Commercial View. I think if I stop ALL the way down next time, I might get a bit more coverage, but still not enough. It's really short, but with a recessed board the camera handled it fine, with about 10mm to spare. No possibility of any movements, but no reason to, either. I think it scales out to about 12mm on 35mm. Too bad about the corners, but I think it will be OK with some subjects.

My first reaction isn't photographic, its that here in the U.S. anyone taking pictures of a nuclear power plant, especially with a large format camera on a tripod, would get an immediate visit from the police. They wouldn't recognize a view camera, and would be aware that nuclear plants, chemical plants, and airports are right at the top of the "do not photograph because you might be a terrorist" list!
Aside from that, interesting composition, makes me look closely to see how many points of interest I can find.

Aside from that, interesting composition, makes me look closely to see how many points of interest I can find.
Hi Peter, many thanks for taking the time to look and comment. I am particularly pleased about it, because it seems that for you the image works both as a photograph and in a social context - what more can I ask for?
The plant has an interesting history and if you know physical perimeter security you can see that this installation is very thorough - solid outer fence, cameras and microwave intrusion detection, probably also weight sensors on the other side of the fence. I heard stories of security or police cars turning up when someone was photographing, but this is no more. The plant has a fascinating history - it took 11 years to build and achieved first criticality in 1986. After 1-2 years in trial operation and only 100 days in power generating operation, the plant was shutdown temporarily and legal battles ensued. It turned out that to counter earthquake risk, the reactor had been built 70m away from the planned location. This rendered the building and operating license invalid and it never was awarded another license. It was kept on standby until 2001 when it was ruled to permanently shut down and after fuel removal it is since then being demolished. What you see now is just the outer shell, the innards have already been removed and sold or scrapped. The concrete structures will follow soon.

Haha! I forgot this wasn't America! Haha
But ironically I wouldn't be surprised if Germany owns part or America just like China owns part of America, so it's possible some of my taxes do go to Germany haha :)

Yes, That was indeed the same group riding down I-280 to where (restaurant for lunch) this image was created.
Setting up and getting this group image was a bit challenging as the majority of them spoke no English which meant directing by hand signals and body language. This was a flat and boring parking lot that took me a bit of thinking to work out how to place this group so it would not look so flat and boring. My connection with this group is a bit more involved, but that is a story for another day.
Camera used was the same old 5x7 Sinar C2 with Sinar shutter and 8-1/2" Kodak Commercial EKtar @ f16 (one of the most often used) and Efke 100 film (really mixed emotions with this film).

I still don't quite understand the selective color thing when you scan in color and set of black-and-white, it just makes no sense to me that the image can be selectively colored afterwards by scanning a black-and-white image in color unless there is some kind of hidden color that is picked up somehow in the black-and-white image. I don't know, I don't get it...
It is however really beautiful by the way...
Chemistry i sometimes close to magic. Split toning however is pretty straightforward. It's usually applied to paper copies but works on film too and sometimes happens spontaneously.
Some chemicals only affect the substance of the emulsion that form the dark parts and other only affect the paper or film base.
In this case the film base (highlights) was affected which gave the shadows a golden tint when converted to positive. The blue in the higlights was then applied with the split toning tool in lightroom.

Stupid question, what is giving the porcelain (or similar) the milky quality in your photos Ken?
The lens, the developing, lens movements, etc?
It's a very good question. The milky quality comes from lighting, exposure, development, scanning, editing, composition, choice of lens, focal length and aperture...all those things.
There's also an element of what we might call human visual perception at work, where adjacent tones affect one another. The same item will appear dark when placed next to a white item, and light next when placed next to a dark item. We can use this to our advantage (if we like that sort of thing) much as painters combine adjacent colors.

It's a very good question. The milky quality comes from lighting, exposure, development, scanning, editing, composition, choice of lens, focal length and aperture...all those things.

Wow, very fascinating. Thank you. Oh and wonderful photo...never complimented it!
I suspected it might be a combination of everything, just wasn't sure if particular things had more influence. In the 1000s of photographs I have taken never had a photo come out with this sort of perception...and noticed it in a lot of your recent macro/close-up work.
Learning is so great. I just learned about Scheimpflug and that amazed me. The idea that I will be able to manipulate the image plane's DOF is just boggling coming from someone shooting 35mm and 120 for 5+ years now.
Thanks again. Sorry for no photo contributions, yet...although will in the future (4x5 topics though).

I think you will find this forum to be one of the better ones for learning about photography in general, not just 'large format'. I tried a couple of other forums which seemed to be all about gear, buying the latest whatever for ungodly amounts of money. But here, we just post our pics and discuss how we made them. I've seen a huge improvement in my own photography since I started hanging out here; I cannot say the same for the other forum I tried before this one.

Wow. I love to hear that. It seems like a very nice bunch of people, many of which have an endless amount of knowledge and experience. I mainly have been sitting back and reading/watching in my time here so far. Only have a few more "pieces" left to kit and my kit is ready to start shooting. I get my first batch of 4x5 film in tomorrow.

Hello all, I am new here and have yet to take any LF photographs. I have taken the plunge and am acquiring the needed equipment. Attached is a photograph taken by my Grandfather (Carl G Jensen) in 1910 with his 5x7. This is a scan from the glass negative. I have a number of his glass negatives and this has lead me to the large format 4x5 and 5x7 world. This particular photo is of my Grandmother and Uncle.

I'll post some more. Is the image dark on your screen? Do I need to lighten the image? I'm very proud to be left caretaker of his work. From what I can gather he had a Conley. I have the booklet's he saved from the time. I have heard the term "portrait camera" in referance to the camera he owned, but not sure exactly what was meant by that. The camera was sold in the 30's to help pay for an operation for a sister of my father. I am in the process of acquiring LF equipment. I now have a 45 tachihara and will make some photographs of my own very soon. But my real desire is to buy a 57. I can't access the classifieds of this forum as of yet as I have not been a member for 30 days. Any help? Thanks (long live 57).

Carl, Conley was a trade name that I think Monkey Wards used for their cameras. someone will correct me if that's wrong. But the Conley cameras I've been acquainted with were identical in most ways with Gundlach who very likely was the mfr. for MW. Sears was SeRoCo Sears Roebuck and Co. and so on. None of them are hard to find. I've sold several over the years but don't have one for you just now. They are handsome little cameras. Light and nimble. Wait for a good one. Nothing worse than trying to use an old piece of junk.

Jim, thanks. I was not looking for the history of the Conleys. They were a sears camera. I have a old Conley 45 folder. I am in the market for a little better quality 57 than the Conley. I won a deardoff on ebay but that fell through.

I have a number of 5X7 glass negatives that my Grandfather (Carl George Jensen) took from about 1910-1940. Somewhere in the later years the Conley was sold to pay for an operation for one of his daughters. Is there an interest in this forum of these photographs? I can scan some of these as time permits and post them. If there is no real interest I can save myself the time. I have posted two of these previously and they can still be viewed on this thread. Please let me know as I have no way of knowing if there is any interest. You will not hurt my feelings if the answer is no interest.
Thank you, Carl E Jensen.

All-
Not sure if this has been announced elsewhere on the board, and this is probably not exactly the right place to post this, but it can't hurt:
Keith Canham is putting together the group buys for 5x7 Kodak color negative film right now. The films are Portra 160 & 400, and Ektar 100. Each should be about the same price as last time, $400 or so for 50 sheets. There is a min. order of 30 boxes needed for each type for that type to be cut to that size. As of the other day, Keith says that the order list currently currently 11 boxes of Portra 400 committed, 16 boxes of Portra 160 committed and 5 boxes of Ektar 100 committed.
I'm already stocked up with the 2 Portra emulsions; I'm on the Ektar list only this time.

In my ever continuing quest to be a better photographer I study the works of other artists to see what I can learn from them. One of the artists I have been studying recently is Edward Weston. He has a very well known photograph of a pepper that is quite beautiful. While I never intend to copy another artists work I sometimes will shoot something very similar as an exercise to "see" the light, subject matter and approach that they used to make one of their well known images.
This, while nowhere near as memorable or beautiful as the Weston pepper is one of the test shots made in my learning process. I like it–and I don't. The light is nice. The curves are interesting but it is still a complete derivative of a previously made photograph. But, I can take this knowledge, experience and approach and add it to my knowledge base for anything else I shoot in the future. I love to learn.

Stormpetrel: Wonderful, especially since wildlife is a difficult subject for large format! Since your screen name is a bird, is ornithology a special interest?
Wow Stormpetrel! What an amazing capture.

Thank you Peter! It is indeed.
Every two years, I have the opportunity to do some fieldwork with seabirds biologists and last time I went with the LF camera....

Beautiful tones and composition as usual; love the one imperfect leaf.
Thank you very much.
I think Hostas are a great and challenging subject, especially when the wind blows !
Another great one Ken. I too really like the imperfect leaf which makes it even more interesting.

Thank you, but D-23 is rather "plain-vanlilla", very similar if not identical to D-76 with regard to film speed, contrast curves, etc.
Tonality comes more from our choice of subject, lighting and subsequent handling in Photoshop or the darkroom.

D-23 is a metol developer which is soft and semi compensating. It shows in others work as well.
