Before I started darkroom manipulations, non of my photography tutors know how to replicate Jerry Uelsmann's techniques. I spent countless hours researching but found no
techniques until i went onto this forum. I've learnt how to dodge, burn, blur and mask. I thank this wonderful forum for help ^_^

This image is made up of 3 negatives.

This image is made up of 1 negative, the roots is exactly the same as the upper part of the tree.

I also thank Jerry Uelsmann for inspiring me so much :D

more about me: I'm just an ordinary student at Egglescliffe sixth form in the UK. My dream job would be a photo-manipulator or a graphite artist.

Hand and Tree

I see the background behind the tree , the vignette is not complete therefore the greyness shows through and is not good.

Although I do like the way the tree sits on the hand. good job

Challenge yourself with new and more contemporary blends, try not to mimic what you see with Ullesman , he has done the trees, he has done it , now try not to mimic him too much, please push yourself further and come up with imagery which is unique to yourself. Get some ideas from Man Ray or others doing photo montage and laying objects on sensitized paper.

Using white backgrounds is giving you a false sense of security , too easy to accomplish, try placing tone upon tone, forget the white mask for now , you will find it more difficult but in the end more satisfying.

By overlapping two images or more try to get both exposures on easel to be 10 seconds, you will have to adjust the apeture of the lens and filters to match the images at 10 seconds.
then on your easel map out the overlap and drag your dodging tool for 10 second from one end of the blend to the other, repeat with the second image from the opposite end of the blend if successful you will have a perfect blend of two full bodied images.

I am hopeful that you will accomplish some nice blends , just remember there are no jobs out here for hand photo montage, unless people love your work and buy it as art.

good luck
Bob

Duliol,

Re Bob's reference to Man Ray, see this Wikepedia article:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photogram

Note the reference, apart from those to Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, Picasso, etc., to William Henry Fox Talbot. He was from the UK, and a pioneer in photography. Your tutors probably know about him, if you aren't already familiar with him, and you should have little difficulty finding books in a decent UK library about his work.

Ok, thanks for suggestion ^_^ I shall push myself harder too by learning from my mistakes and experiment to prevent errors from happening xD

I know that there is no job for hand photomontage but I hope that this photographs gives me good marks to get me a decent grade.

Thank you.

Based on your efforts I'd give you an A grade right now.
You will always make mistakes, that's how you get better.

I would suggest that you reference symbolism and its place in artistic creation throughout many centuries. Uelesmann's work has been successful because he places a heavy emphasis on symbolic representation. That is not to say that he has done it "all".

On the subject of technique, reference sharp and unsharp masking and their use in composite images.

dulioil, you will be a graphic artist one day, you are almost there anyway.

I too have dabbled in this kind of darkroom work, very, very hard to get it perfect. I believe your work with three sheets of paper and the tree, is fantastic.

Having looked at your website (or whatever it is the link went to) you are also a very talented drawer.

You could have a job doing illustrations at international fashion shows if you eventually get to be quick enough, as well as accurate enough. Very few people are that good, you may be.

Bob, sixth form is the last year of secondary education, next is tertiary education which is generally a university. The first 6 years is usually called primary education. I believe you may call it grade 12 in your country.

Mick.

It's her page on DeviantArt, which is like Flickr but broader and less conventional in content. Popular especially with young artists.

your images are nice!
one detail though : your prints are dirty : hair and dust...
Maybe that's the next thing you can improve!
I would help you with that, but i'm sure someone with a better english will do it better than me!
cheers.
