Nice. I lived in LA in the mid 1980s. I wanted to do a series called "The rivers and streams of LA" but life got in the way. Those concrete drainage ditches have so many photographic posibilites. I've loved them since I saw "Them" as a kid.

I'm curious ... in light of the recent "cityscapes" thread, do any of you make a distinction between a cityscape and an urban landscape?

Yup. I consider the image I posted an urban landscape not a cityscape. I'm probably not the one to define this though.

Tough call. One definition is;

"A cityscape is the urban equivalent of a landscape."

Great photograph Vinny. You may want to read up on the river's history. The whole city was founded around it, but for a century it has been essentially pumped dry to supply a portion of LA's water supply. The water entering it now is effluent from water treatment stations.

Very hard to follow Harry's gorgeous and disturbing image, but somebody's got to do it.

Not far from here this bridge crosses a stream. The small lake it feeds is popular in the summer. If I'm in the mood for a few 4x5 frames, but don't have time for an expedition up the mountain, this park is a good place to head for.

I'm experimenting with the trial pack of paper that B&S sent. This is Cranes Diploma. Doesn't hold a candle to Cot 320. Na2/palladium print

Here is a shot I did because this scene is likely to disappear as the city grows up, and in-filling is preferred over sprawl. 50 or more years ago this group of small houses was available for abalone fishermen to rent during the season. The rents, I'm told were $16.00 a month. Less than 40 years ago (but still decades ago) it was affectionately known as hippy hollow for the cheap rents. Then there was a fire, and they've been vacant ever since. Now I suspect they are just waiting for the bulldozer.

I would guess about 20 blocks up-river from the Blue Moon area. The 65mm and waiting for a moment without traffic makes it look like a wide blvd - you would be hard pressed to recognize the corner just going down the street. I wanted to capture the look of a more relaxed time.

long exposure of the Ravenswood power plant as seen looking east from Roosevelt Island.

This is the largest power plant in all of New York State. It used to be part of New York's ConEdison before generation was deregulated and the plant was sold off to Keyspan and then TransCanada. It's located in Long Island City just east of Roosevelt Island and is one of the primary sources of electrical generation for Manhattan with a nameplate capacity of about 2 gigawatts.

It has 4 primary gas fired generators and a number of smaller secondary gas fired generators. The 4 big boys are monstrous. The largest being the 1 gigawatt "Big Allis" or Generator 30 (named after the manufacturer Allis Chalmers). It has two sisters, Generators 10 & 20. All 3 are single cycle gas fired generators. Natural gas is burned, it heats up an air/water mixture, the pressurized steam drives the rotation of a magnet, and this creates electricity.

Smoke stacks from left to right are 40 (not shown), 30, 20, 10. You can see a massive conveyor belt complex in front that goes off the frame, that used to transport coal from river barges when it was first built. The plant upgraded to burning relatively clean natural gas in the 60s. The coal apparatus remains.

Thanks for the encouragement Thomas, it means a lot coming from you. These were my first photos and one of the main inspirations I had when I decided I wanted to have a go at this was your work. My efforts don't compare to the excellent images you produce and I'm only shooting locally (Leeds doesn't have quite the visual impact of Hong Kong) but I'm pleased with results given all the things that could have gone wrong due to inexperience.

Thanks! I do quite a bit of nighttime cityscapes myself with APS-C digital, and have been considering trying it out with 6x6 MF or 4x5 LF. I used to do some 35mm shots with Velvia but have gotten better results with digital and stitching.

Your pictures prove it can be done with larger format film despite the ridiculous dynamic range requirements.

That's a gorgeous capture. I would expect the headlights to blow out, but they are not even near there. Is that PS or did you manage to do this in-camera?

Also, how do you determine the exposure? I bracketed like crazy when I did these with 35mm film, but can't imagine doing that much bracketing with LF.

Yes, the images are processed in Photoshop, which I use to bring out the huge dynamic range of the negative (which is quite flat in the straight scan). Im not doing any local adjustments, but Im using levels, curves, shadow/highlight controls etc.

As for the exposure, Im using a combination of knowing what exposure works for good light trails and some detail in lit windows, combined with a compact digital with M mode to see how the ambient light balances with that. I wait for the scene light level to drop to the exposure I want to use (since car lights and lit buildings/signs are at a constant level).

Just for a ballpark figure, how much exposure do you give for 'good light trails and detail in lit windows'? Say, about 1 minute at f/16 or so? I shoot black and white film but I also don't really use light meters. I guess pretty well in the daytime, but I've never tried nighttime urban photography.

With the film Im currently using (Agfa Optima 100, since long discontinued), Im using around 2 minutes at F16 as a starting value. This might of course be corrected as needed, but often I do not have too if the subject has a lot of traffic and buildings.

Unfortunately many of the shots I took in Tokyo this summer are not as good as Id like them to be, they have focus issues that I believe was due to a poor Crown Graphic I was using at the time. I have a better camera now, Ive not had the same issues.

What is "urban"? We have something that would probably qualify about 90 miles away, depending on what you mean by the term.

Does this mean you're actually considering posting an image, and joining the 1% that actually back up their commentary? ;)

Chamonix 45N-1, 135mm Rodenstock APO-Sironar-S, expired Fuji NPL. Exposure was 30s, f/11 (from memory).

Testing extreme movements. There's vignetting in the top of the frame, which I didn't notice because it was so dark, but it worked well in getting rid of some distracting light sources.

Not sure if this 'urban landscape' or just 'landscape' but it's got buildings in it so I posted it here.

This is a composite of two exposures taken about 20mins apart as the good sky had disappeared by the time the light levels had fallen enough to record the street lights.

Critiques are fine.

They are sometimes hard to come by in here though...

to give you critiques on your images, they have to move me enough to unslack and click on "reply" first. Then, since I don't want to post only "great capture" style of stuff, I have to think about properly formulating whatever I want to say :-)

I liked those two pictures. I think they have a nice quiet quality to them, a simplicity. They didn't strike me so much that I wanted to give you a feedback if you hadn't asked for it though.

The second one, the city in the distance with the clouds, has some otherworldly feeling about it. But there is something that's missing for me in the framing... if it was my picture I would be telling myself again about my tendency to try to get it "all in one picture" at the cost of not getting a real good composition. But that might be just my problem, maybe what bothers me is something totally different really :-)

This is a Fuji FP-100c proof for a shot taken with my Speed Graphic and Optar 135 on Portra 100t. I'm really not sure how the camera got knocked out of alignment, but the proof was done second so it likely happened in between. Of course, I ended up liking the colour balance in this a lot and fear I'll regret having used tungsten stock, but we'll see. I'm also disappointed the vending machines are out of focus. Still, can't wait to see the full 4x5.

No tests...because that is the test. The outside exposure is easy because I have a lot of experience doing ambient night shots in the area. On the inside I just metered the polarized strobe light off a gray card through another appropriately oriented polarizer, compensated for aperture and added a bunch of pops guessing about a stop of reciprocity failure knowing I couldn't possibly overexpose the film. I used 3cm of shift and 1 cm of rise to position the skyline so I used the centerfilter but I still had to use a PS curve layer and gradient mask to correct for some falloff.

Winston and San Pedro, two blocks farther east.

Dude I'd save your marriage. I really like working with 5x7, but have been working in 4x5 a bit lately and I don't think you can really tell the difference. This negative (http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulmcevoy/5062071401/sizes/o/in/photostream/) is maybe my best so far. On 4x5 and you couldn't really ask for more detail (the scan doesn't do it justice).

cheaper film, cheaper cameras, cheaper holders, smaller equipment.

The only reason to shoot 5x7 to my mind is to make contact prints. I'm not sure if I'm ever going to get around to doing that, so it may all be a waste. However, it's great fun.

My first foray into night photography. Especially LF. I need a wide angle lens for my 4x5. This was shot with a 210mm which is way too long.

I developed for about 2.5 minutes less than the development time because there was such a disparity between the light on the street and the bright lights. I could have gone to 7 minutes, but I am not sure how that would have affected the mid-tones.

Again I'm not a big fan of the composition but I was limited with the focal length I used. Also I decided to use the SALE sign as a foundation. Something you eye can recognize.

A quick note on the above image:

Alviso is a small town situated astride the Guadalupe river at the extreme southern edge of the San Francisco Bay and on the eastern edge of San Jose with which it was incorporated with in the late 1960's. It's an old town that was first incorporated in the 1850's and for many years served as a shipping port and rail transportation hub for San Jose. Steamboats regularly traveled between San Francisco and Alviso.

At the turn of the last century, a Chinese immigrant Sai Yin Chew opened a cannery in Alviso that at one time was the 3d largest cannery in the United States and the first cannery to can asparagus. During the Great Depression of the 1930's Alviso was known for its dance halls and gambling establishments.

Less than 2 miles north - straight up the railroad tracks in the image - lies the ghost town of Drawbridge which is slowly sinking into the bay. Drawbridge was still inhabited in the mid 1980's when the local news media erroneously reported it as a ghost town. Several occupants of Drawbridge had their homes broken into and ransacked by curiosity seekers. If I remember correctly, profuse apologies followed in the press.

Being Sunday, expect a miracle

This image bring to mind an incident which happened in New Orleans back when I was in my late pre or early teens. A hurricane blew into town - I can't remember the storms name but it probably was the one just before Betsy. Anyway, a guy in the neighborhood had just purchased a shiny new car and his plan to protect that car from storm damage was to park it on the wind blocking side of a Catholic church (for those readers that are New Orleans savvy this church is/was located on Camp street across from Coliseum square and which I believe it is now the International School...I actually attended Kindergarten there) and then move the car to the opposite side when the eye of the storm had passed through. This seemed to be a good plan to me because when the eye of a hurricane passes, the wind changes direction by 180 degrees and blows just as strong as it did previously but in the opposite direction; the substantial church should provide excellent protection. The Church was a masonry structure with a tall steeple with an adjoining elementary school.

Well, what seemed at the outset a foolproof plan for the car owner turned into a complete disaster for the strong winds toppled the church's steeple onto the car completely crushing it. If I remember correctly the image of crushed car with overlaying steeple made the front page of the local newspaper - the Times Picayune. After the storm had passed it and the adjoining elementary school was a sight to behold for the latter, a masonry structure of 3 or 4 stories, had its rear wall completely stripped by the storm but the desks in each of the classrooms were left in perfect alignment as if nothing had happened.

One picture is worth a thousand words.

Hiroki, I really like your Tokyo shots... but how on earth do you get access to the rooftops??? I really need some tips in that field. I am currently travelling in India with 4x5 and it is a PITA that every time you encounter a building with a good vantage point, some stupid watch man - understanding nothing of what you are saying btw - stand in you way waving his hands "permission... permission... permission". And I can only imagine Japan to be much more strict in that matter, right?

I don't know about that... I got hooked from their TV commercial... the music is haunting. Also haunting... when I took this photo it was freezing and WINDY! Seems they have created a wind tunnel at City Center. As these are probably the tallest building on the Strip there is a funnel effect. Most of the rooms in these hotels have balconies... the wind creates this haunting (and loud) whistling type noise. Kind of like standing next to a Saguaro when it's a little breezy, only much magnified.

My fiancé makes watertower sculptures (http://upintheairsomewhere.com/ceramics/watertowers/large-gray.html), and anytime we show them in New York, we get the same question: "oh, are you guys from Brooklyn?"

John, can you help me understand this? There seem to be just as many watertowers in Manhattan as Brooklyn. Not to mention that there are plenty in Chicago and just about any other midwest or east coast city. It's always puzzled me why so many New Yorkers single out one of their boroughs as the most watertower-y.

Just started processing my New York shots from a trip this summer. This is just a low-res prescan, but I won't have much of a chance to work on it for awhile, so I can't resist showing it now.

Incidentally, this makes the first formal 4x5 film shot I've shown here.

Oh, and it's upside down because I'm left-handed and this was taken handheld with a Speed Graphic (135 Optar on Portra 400NC).

I'm cheating a little bit because I am looking at the full size scan (which as sized now would print at 24x30) and there are 21 water towers in (or partially in) the shot. I actually had not counted myself before.

Ben, those sculptures are great! I really like all those ceramic pieces... you might be tempting me to spend more money at a time of year when I shouldn't be.

As far as water towers go, there is a city ordinance dating from the 1800's that makes water towers mandatory for buildings of more than six stories. Two companies make them, one in Manhattan and the other in Brooklyn. Perhaps because of the locale of the second builder people associate water towers with Brooklyn? Don't know.

I have no facts to back this up, but due to the stated law and my guess that Manhattan is more populated with tall buildings on average, I would be willing to wager that Manhattan trumps Brooklyn in water towers per square mile (if not in total).

My favorite "water tower" in New York is the Rachel Whiteread sculpture on top of the MOMA.

Which of these do you think is the better? The one posted above or this one? Why?

Thanks,

Thomas

Thanks! I like the bottom also for the same reasons that you mentioned. I'm a novice at scanning and went back and rescanned the image and adjusted the contract and shadows in PS. I'm going to try to duplicate the scan tonight in the darkroom.

I have to say I keep coming back to this thread... so many wonderful images that I would be proud to put on my wall.
