Better than drum scanning? Cruse Scanners (http://www.crusedigital.com/cd_products_scanners.asp#professional)

Not better. Cruse scanners are used more for reflective scanning of art works like paintings, drawings etc. There is a Cruse scanner in NYC and friends of mine have used it to amazing results. The large flat bed makes it possible to either scan large things or to gang up smaller things which really brings the cost per scan down considerably.

I think that if you need the best quality scan from film, use a drum scanner. Nothing beats them PMTs.

Cruse scanners where great for what they are, reflective scanners.
They did have serious manufacturing and support issues with the first few generations.
I knew a few people who threw out them out after a few years.
I heard that the company and people supporting them disappeared for a longtime then reappeared.

I looked into one a year or so back for a client who wanted to scan mammoth wet plates, tintypes....
The one we looked at only went up to 450mb and the price was 75k used.
The support situation really prevented us from moving forward.

The few that are alive and kicking are really cool though!
Like Steve said, for film nothing beats a PMT!
