Thanks to all who helped me figure out Gitzo's cryptic numbering system for their tripods.

Here is another numeric quandry: I've decided on the GT3531 with the GH3780QR head

http://www.gitzo.com/cms/site/gitzo/tripods/mountaineer?code=GT3531
http://www.gitzo.com/cms/site/gitzo/heads/center_ball?code=GH3780QR

Now, WHICH PLATE goes with this head?? (I would like one to suit a Deardorff 8x10 and one for a Nikon D3)
http://www.gitzo.com/cms/site/gitzo/home/products/accessories/plates

If you can show me a page in the site that explains it that'd be great.

Thanks in advance.

Here is the plate that is linked to from the page for the head I chose:

http://www.gitzo.com/cms/site/gitzo/accessories/plates?code=G2382B

BUT read this: "Gitzo quick release plates come in three different profiles (A, B and C). Each profile is offered in different lengths (short or square, medium and long) and with different features (graduated, anti rotation pin) and attachments (1/4” - 3/8”). In the new collection we unified some 1/4” and 3/8” attachment plates into a unique new code that includes 2 screws for both 1/4” and 3/8“ sizes."

Could this be more confusing??

I recomm3end if you can get Gitzo GT3541L or LS, folding smaller than GT3531, and maximum height is longer.
About the head, i highly recommend Really Right Stuff or Archa one, Kirk can be good enough, and i heard many swear by Markins as well, rarely i heard some using Gitzo heads.

hi uri,
you can use this plates for your head, http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/569259-REG/Gitzo_GS5370LC_GS5370LC_Quick_Release_Plate.html
or
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/569260-REG/Gitzo_GS5370MC_GS5370MC_Quick_Release_Plate.html

if weight is not so important you could consider mine tripod combo
http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?t=49586with.
i use it with a manfrotto 359,http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=manfrotto+359&N=0&InitialSearch=yes and a linhof technika 5x7 with lenses up to 600mm. after six month i am very happy with mine choice!
keep in mind that gitzo 4 and 5 series have a 15mm larger base than the series 3. could be an advantage with a 8x10 field camera...

Uri,
not to confuse you, but I would recommend S ones, 3531S,(you can always buy the center column accessory later if you want) the weakest link on 3531 is the neck, by using 3531S, your tripod head sits on the flat plate which is stabler than 3531. But if you use only 45 field camera, 3531 would be good enough.

My older Gitzo is very simple - it's got a big "3" on it. :D
