Don't forget, you will also need your serial number, which is something nobody else can supply (legally).

If you had a legally registered install of your Photoshop, you can contact Photoshop and explain the situation and they will reset the number of installs you can have of the software. That does not take care of the disk problem, however.

Well, he said his computer crashed, didn't he? That could mean only one OS and Photoshop 5 makes 98 or 2000 the most likely candidates. :D

98 and ME were still DOS based. 2000 is NT 5 or so and proved very reliable actually. XP is just a clean up and update of 2000 and of course DirectX 9. Vista is I suppose NT 6 and was a move to update pitiful windose security and of course DirectX 10. Win 7 could be NT 7 but I think more NT 6.5. Oh yeah and of course DirectX 11. There may be a pattern here.

Sorry, Ken, but as much as I'd like to agree with you on this...Adobe offers absolutely no semblance of support for older version of their software. You'll spend two or three hours on hold, another twenty minutes deflecting accusations of pirating their software, even if you're registered with them, and then after collecting enough personal data to get the CIA in trouble, they'll inform you they don't support the version. Adobe USED to be good. Of late, it looks like they've been taking Customer Support lessons from Bill Gates. There are a number of good forums for Photoshop. He might try those.

Unfortunately, you are absolutely right. They USED to be great. Their product is still good, but their customer relations, support very much included, completely disintegrated after their acquisition of Macromedia. It is almost as if they fired all the good people that made them what they used to be and hired Microsoft rejects.

They will eventually get their comeupance and the way they treat customers will be their ultimate undoing. Loyal as I am to the brand, I can't wait for the next "new kid on the block" to come out of nowhere and wipe the floor with them in the same manner they did with Quark, Macromedia and a few others. They so richly deserve it that I may not even feel sorry when that happens.

sorry can't help, although I do keep old versions and CDs since I'm naturally a hoarder

Well, duh, I know it doesn't. It was a joke.

That's why I put that big toothy smiley at the end (:D), figured a little humor wouldn't hurt anything. Version 5 of Photoshop is the contemporary of Windows versions 98 and 2000 respectively, BTW, hence the reference.

This site used to be a place where people would make and get jokes. Looks like that is quickly becoming history. Oh, well...

Adobe is a totaly nightmare if it comes to service and also the update part is far away from userfriendly.
I started with PS 3 in about 1995, switched to 5 and then to the Creative Suite 2 Premium.
But since I not use all the aditionell SW I was thinking I can switch back to PS but I had to buy PS CS 4 and pay again the full price!

I hope it is the last update for this SW, if possible I switch to something else!
Always when I tried to get an email to them, it cam back with not anymore acurate or just a Computer one with wrong section!
Adobe is gone for me I tried now not to buy anything from them anymore!!!!

Cheers Armin

Sorry, Marko, it has (unfortunately) become a practice of folks on this forum to say really ugly, pointed, critical, asinine things only to be followed by the smiley thing... for me it has lost its meaning completely and I don't know your postings well enough to know better. SO, I guess I'm the sourpuss here (full disclosure... I am a crumudgeon:D too)

Hey, welcome to the club! :) God knows that I've made that same mistake more than once - misunderstanding someone's comments, that is.

Although I am seriously tempted to think that trying to make light of various more or less important topics is also a grave mistake. There is no such thing as non-important topic on the Internet fora for some folks, everything is life-or-death to them and they act that way.

But what can someone who held George Carlin as one of the idols do when faced with such trends? Make more fun, of course. It's just the matter of picking the right company.

:D

Yes... sort of like having a top fashion model as a girlfriend. Great action but poor support. :D

This particular model seems to be aging rapidly. And very ungracefully. Less and less real action, more and more makeup, all spiced up with lots of nagging and grumbling... ;)

I guess it's true of all big business when all competition is eliminated... support goes to hell because they don't need to compete anymore.
