Who here uses 5x12?
Do you have a dedicated camera (as opposed to a reducing back)? Which one? How do you acquire film? I don't think I've seen it on the yearly Ilford order. I suppose you can cut down 10x12? (which IS available through Ilford)...

I did for a little while, gave it up when I found the camera - a Canham - too fussy for my taste. I got my HP5 Plus through the Ilford annual special order - yes, they have offered 5x12.

Google Tillman Crane...wonderful work!

Has an awesome portfolio in the latest LensWork Extended, too...

There are a few out there. It is a wonderful size to work with and look at. I have a 5 x 12 print by Tillman Crane. Every time I look at it I say to may self the next time I build a 5 x 12 camera I am going to make one for myself. Then the little voice laughs and says you won't have it long remember the 7 x 11 you built for yourself and don't have any more.

I don't, but wish I could. Difficulties in getting filmholders have held me back from getting a 5X12 back for my Canham 5X7. Now, if there's someone out there in ether-land with a conversion back and filmholders sitting around ...

Agree with Richard regarding Tillman's 5X12 work; it's beautiful!

I have a print by Tillman (came with the book) and all of his books and I agree with you. So, what happened to your 7x11? :)

Colin's work is outstanding. I suspect that in his hands any format would strike one as wonderful.

Lois Conner used one in addition to her 7x17.

I too have a print this size by Tillman, which he gave me in part because we built some 5X12 holders for his old Korona.

Easy to get film, just cut 12X20" film down to four sheets.

Hope you build some more of these camera, Richard. I have a box of holders to go with the cameras if you ever get around to it.

Lois Conner used one in addition to her 7x17.

Interesting. They're essentially the same proportion so I wonder what criteria she uses to decide which to use. Or was it a replacement?

My impression from speaking with her was that it was based purely on weight and size.

Colin walks into a photo with his chest out, head high and his knuckles scraping the ground. After he kicks its ass he goes home prints with the soft hands of a maestro and then turns it loose on us lessers to wish for a better future for ourselves.

I believe Diane Maher does, she is a member of the LFF.

Yes, I shoot 5x12 and have a dedicated 5x12 Canham camera. Ilford offers FP4+ and HP5+ in its yearly order (or they have). I also have some 5x12 Tri-X which was cut down from 10x12 which I have yet to try.

Diane, is any of your work online anywhere?

Richard,
Yes, I do, but it is not current. If you are interested, it is located in the following places.

http://dianemaher.fotopic.net/c1268597.html and http://820images.siteframe.org/folder.php?id=19. I haven't updated either site recently.

I also shoot 5x12 a fair bit. I've got the Canham and now six AWB holders - three in walnut, three in cherry. It's a terrific format, and quite manageable.

Reviving this thread. I know Steve Sherman and I recently purchased new 5x12 cameras. Who else is using one currently? Or any LF pano format from 4x10 to 12x20 (Corran).

I'm still using mine, albeit not as much lately. I do have a plan to go out soon and shoot some with it, but there's a lens I need CLA'd first that I want to use with it (lucky score on a 190 Wide-Field Ektar). The big plus with it for me is that my 5x12 is a Canham, so it shares the base chassis with my 5x7, so it stays light and mobile. For processing, I use a Jobo 3005 drum - the film sticks up out of the tubes a little, but it fits fine inside the cone of the lid, and I've not had any issues with the finished negatives.

You asked about other pano formats.

I use 7 x 17 quite a bit and love the ratio to it.

I went to 5x12 Korona when I got too old and weak to handle the 7x17 Korona easily. I have 7 holders 3 original for film, and 3 new ones from Sandy. The 7th is a Korona for dry plates. I like the format, but still see in 7x17. The size just suits my vision better.
