View Full Version : Snow. Frost. Rime. (Fresh frozen photos)

Come November, new snows often blanket higher slopes in the North Cascades.

It’s a fun time for me to add some shivers to my portfolio.

In the shot below, I didn’t need snow shoes, but my tripod sure did. Its legs sank way, way down. Then my darkslides “froze” shut, even though it wasn’t too cold. I had to push, pull and struggle with them. Not easy when the holders are positioned in your camera. I was furious. So were they. But other holders were more cooperative – so I settled down, and took a few shots.

It’s still early in the season, but I’d enjoy seeing your favorite chilly images.

Hi
I like the photo, It must be a real challenge to get good shots in those conditions,
look forward to seeing more,
Brian, :D

Thanks, Brian!

Heck, that one was a cinch.

Now this one was a different story. I raced up here to catch the early-morning light, and paid a price: slips & falls caused some bodily injury and gear damage. But my pain is gone, my gear is fixed, and I have this photo. The granite spires rise near the first shot, but they're more distant in time – last year, Halloween Day, 2008. I remember my polarizer didn’t deepen those skies too much!

Like you, I’m looking forward to seeing more “cold snaps” here. ;)

Heroique,
You may want to check out these all weather tripod shoes by Gitzo for when the legs sink into snow, mud, etc.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/105446-REG/Gitzo_G1586B3_G1586_All_Weather_Tripod.html

They're inexpensive and can save much frustration. Even though a Gitzo product, they attach simply with a built-in stretch cord wrapped around the ends of the legs to my Gitzo Series 4 & 5 aluminum tripods, they will most likely also work on other tripod brands. I keep them handy when anticipating such situations, and put them in a ziplock bag to avoid a mess in the pack - very little weight (plastic) but somewhat bulky.

We get very little in the way of snow here, had to go quite a long way to get these... Ebony SV45ti, velvia 100

Eugene, I enjoyed your shots – especially the middle one of Bryce Canyon. A trip from Johannesburg to Bryce under deep snows is quite Odyssean. And w/ LF gear in tow, I should say Herculean. I can feel the snowy air as it obscures all the red pinnacles.

Speaking of reds, my Velvia-50 often “sings the blues” in sunny-winter scenes, especially in open shade at higher elevations. Maybe your Velvia-100 does the same. In my post #3, I anticipated the conspicuous blue shadows – even though they were invisible to my eyes at the time of the shot – but I decided against any filtration beyond the polarizer. I’ve often added an 81b or 81c for greater warmth – and sometimes even an 85c in situations like this. But then other areas get way too warm for my tastes. And I do enjoy preserving the cold feel of blue in nippy scenes. It’s just that Velvia, frequently in scenes like this, renders the color with such drama! I’m hoping additional posts will show similar scenes with other E-6 emulsions. I most often view my 4x5 slides with an overhead projector, so I like getting the precise effects I like on the film. And that means plenty of filter bracketing.

(Jerry, those snow shoes for tripods are tempting. Not sure if they’d fit my Ries, but they’d be perfect for mushy set-ups.)

Here in Georgia US we don't get that much ice, so when it happens we go for it to get some shots.

The jagged mountains & steep waterfalls make me dizzy!

Here’s just-fallen snow under three Austrian Black Pines. (At far right – a Giant Sequoia.)

These are dark, massive, rugged trees lighted from below by the snowfall.

Plus a crop of their frosted feet.

Another thread that should be moved to image sharing. It's been a shivery winter for much of North America and Europe, and it's not over yet! There should be lots of photos of frosty stuff this year.

This was last winter on the banks of the Kennedy River.

Arne, I love the one of the Black Forest.

Frank - You're just jealous. I've lived in the cold, raised in Ontario and Quebec, and spent time at the edge of the tree line in Northern Quebec. Snow in September, ice breaks May or June, still patches of snow under the trees (few, spindly, undersized) in July. When the choice had to be made between the North and the West Coast I chose the easy way and have been loving the temperate rain forest ever since. I enjoy the bit of snow and ice we get every year, and don't mind that it usually melts quickly. I'm glad to be a wimp. Come visit some time.

Is that blond girl really out in the snow in loafers with no socks on? You really are cruel to your models!

Hasn't been any frost here for a few weeks. (They're putting down straw and trucking in snow to cover it for the Olympics next month.) It was frosty back in December. This was taken near home. A line of cliffs and ravines separates us from the main highway.

Is that Morraine Lake?
Maroon Lake near Aspen, Moraine Lake is in Banff NP. However, it is a (moraine) lake formed by glacial deposits.

We don't get that much snow ordinarily in the SE of England, so I'm still getting used to photographing it - this is definitely not a great effort. It's Brighton pier, shot with a 90mm Super Angulon XL (a 150 would have been better, but I did not have it with me at the time) on an Arca Swiss 5x4 with Velvia 100.
