I still have not figured out the best way to process Efke PL100 sheet film, especially when it comes to N-minus development. My preferred method is to use a weak and compensating development regimen to preserve the highlights, but I tried N-1 tonight instead. Bad idea. The contrast went up compared to my compensating approach, and the highlights are still too far gone for my taste. Next time I might try N-2 or just go back to a highly dilute developer and a semi-stand technique. With Efke shutting down production I suppose it won't matter since I don't have all that much 9x12 left.

Nice job on this one. You can stop worrying about processing Efke film since they are now out of business. You might like Foma or its' cheaper re-box, Arista Edu Ultra from Freestyle.

Great series Ken this one is my favorite of the group but all are excellent. You are another of the many on this forum with a clearly recognizable style and its not just the beautiful tonal range you work in either. Your images have a peacefulness and comfortable familiarity with the subject that is quite lovely and are always enjoyable to wander about in.

I wasn't sure this image would work - used a shallow depth of field, as the breeze kept moving the leaves around, and I didn't want motion blur. With the constant movement, I doubted I would get the leaves in a good configuration, with the focus where I intended. I'm happy with the way it turned out.

Yellow-Poplar Leaves - taken May 2012. This is on TMX developed in D-76 1:1 at 3x my normal development time, very low SBR of 1:4; Ilford MGIV FB, selenium toned. For those really good at scanning, any tips on how to get my Epson V700 to accurately record highlight tones that are in the high Zone VIII to IX tone? The leaf edge, of especially the largest leaf, contains the right tonality in the print, but it fails to come across in the print scan and any attempt at trying to fix it, just makes it a dirty gray, so I just leave it alone.

I've found I have to go a good ways past the end of the highlights on the histogram (with Epson Scan) to get the detail that is clearly there on the negative. In CS5 all the detail will be there and I can then adjust curves to relieve the 'muddiness'. If I just put the slider right where the highlights on the histogram end then the scan often appears to have blown highlights, which is not an accurate representation of what is on the negative.

Chuck P.
29-Dec-2012, 15:54
This is the image after visiting Ken Lee's link he provided and learning more about scanning, thank you very much Ken.

The first scan has a slight bump in the brightness level of the high values, and although it looks a bit more crisp in that respect, which is nice in itself, it's a bit false when compared to the print. This new print scan is much better in my view and is so much more representative to the actual print that it just about makes no odds---I don't suppose it could ever match perfectly, but this is very close.

Folks, I guess I'm causing problems for myself by using the "replace this photo" feature in Flickr as I replaced it one more time with an even better scan--------now, every time I open LFPF in a new browswer window, the photos are here, then refreshing the screen causes them to disappear. Just wandering, is my last photo of the yellow-poplar leaves not visible to anyone else? Thanks.

Robert Brazile
30-Dec-2012, 07:53
Yes, when you "replace" the photo, it gets a new ID and the old link no longer works. You may be able to edit the post and replace the link, which will cause it to reappear. If you use the sample BB code that Flickr provides under the "share" button, it will include a link back to Flickr along with the photo which will at least leave a bread crumb trail back to the original account.

Preston; I've in the past dismissed many of your colorful landscape photos as high quality postcard genre; stuff I wasn't personally into. This one is certainly not. This one is fine art that would make Eliot Porter jealous if he were alive.

How do y'all like it upside down?

David Higgs
2-Mar-2013, 11:00
thanks for the kind words all

To answer questions, it's an argyrotype. My first one! I've since made a better one with a more even spread. I'm using it as a cheaper way into Platinum. I thought I'd practice with the cheaper sensitiser first. The results so far are better than expected, I'm dry heating the image above my wood burner which gives darker tones than the light brown I expected.

As for upside down, the framer had to call me so they knew which way was up. An artist friend of mine thought it was better the other way up. Choices.

We are waiting for spring here in the uk, it's been a long grey winter....

Thanks Nate. I'm not sure what I think of the image myself...

Yes it is cluttered - that is the nature of many of the places I frequent in my adopted home. A recent drive from here to Casper, Wyoming where my parents live had me longing for the simplicity of wide open spaces, but I enjoy the challenge of trying to create some sort of order out of the mess that is the forest around here.

Ken,

Thanks. I scanned this with my Epson 750 to see if I would like the results. On the screen they look ok. Will probably get a drum scan down the road. One of the aspects of 8x10 or any large format that I like, is the films ability to show this kind of texture and detail. Jim

Yeah, me too.

Damn dude!

Thanks guys. Although--perfectionist alert!--I'm not happy with the negative space to the right of center. I feel like it needs something. Another branch farther in the background, perhaps? I'm not sure. Luckily these props grow on trees (!) so I might try a few more arrangements.

A shot from November while doing some 4x5 LF + strobe experimentation in the home studio.

Calumet 45NX 4x5
Rodenstock Geronar 150mm F6.3 lens.
Lighting via Alien Bees B800 strobe at full power in 22" soft white beauty dish with diffusion sock, hovered directly over and in slightly in front of camera position.
White bounce card underneath vase containing leaf.
Strobe triggered with a pair of PocketWizard Plus II radio triggers, one on camera attached to the Copal shutter via sync cable and the other on the B800 strobe.
Ilford HP5+. 1/125th second @ F32 with film rated at box speed of 400.
Self Developed in Xtol 1+2 in Paterson Universal Tank using the Taco Method. 15 1/2 minutes @ 20 degrees Celsius. Tap water stop bath. Ilford Rapid Fixer. Photo-Flo.
Negative scanned with Epson V600 in two scans and merged back together in PhotoShop since the V600 doesn't natively support 4x5 scans in one pass.

Thanks for posting.

Yes, with maximum back tilt and a nearly flat subject. There is some cropping around all edges for esthetic purposes, but the original image seemed reasonably sharp throughout. Originally I thought the lens was a S-A Angulon, but that lens is on a Technika style board. I used a second-hand Optar WA bought in 1968. Too many lenses gets confusing! The Graphic View II bought recently on ebay was discontinued in 1967. The performance of old equipment is esthetically and financially gratifying.

Thank you Martin, no filters used. This was taken with old Velvia 50. It was a very dull, overcast day, towards the end of the day, and I remember it taking much time to set up and get the movements right.

Here's a leaf of a different type. We had a really bad ice storm in Oklahoma last week, and this prickly pear cactus got coated. I can't imagine the cactus is happy about that.

I looked it up, and yes, they do function as juicy, sharp leaves! Feel free to let me know what you think.

Wow. Nicest hand-coloring job I've ever seen.

Thanks. Some of them don't turn out that well, but I got lucky. It was part of a series of imagining colors in nature as they might appear - red snails, blue mushrooms, etc., loosely based on the idea that other species see different colors than we do.
