The trouble with high school girls is that when you want to capture the brooding heartache of teenage angst, they're just so damned happy...

Interesting choice of film & processing - why did you do this rather than simply use a black and white film?

I like the way Velvia looks in b&w - it seems to retain the richness (strange I know, maybe it's just my eyes). I'll also be using the color version for another concept other than just providing the shot to the model.

Thanks, Jim, I'll pass along the compliment! The young man was taken with a 12" Wollensak Velostigmat on 4x5, with the soft focus set waaaaay past where it normally stops. (I removed the set screw that restricts it.)

(I'd really like to find the 15" version of that lens...)

The other two were taken on 8x10 with a Cooke 12.5" f/3.5, but I don't know where they set the soft focus adjustment...

First fruits from the Tonopah Workshop. It was cold and windy so we asked to use the courtroom in the Esmeralda Cty courthouse for a portrait workshop session. Per Volquartz set up this shot with natural north window lighting. I took advantage of his set-up and used the 2D 8X10 with Hermagis Eidoscop #2 @ f5.6. Focus was at the tip of the eye glasses.

Thanks, Jim! The low-resolution scans don't do the print justice, but I'm sure that's the case with all the work we show here. But don't throw those Pinkham & Smith's away, I'll trade you a Velostigmat for one, straight across! What a deal...

I think the Velostigmats are finally getting the respect they deserve. Not long ago they were quite cheap, but I just paid $325 for a 15.5-inch. I'd really like to find the 19.5-inch, but I've only seen them in the old catalogs. Going by the prints we've been getting over the past week or two at the school, the Velostigmats will hold their own against any of the better-known, more expensive pictorial/portrait lenses, at least once you remove the restraining screw to turn the diffusion control loose.

REMOVE YOUR RESTRAINING SCREWS, VELOSTIGMAT OWNERS! SET YOUR LENSES FREE!!!

Great images everyone... :)

Although I do not capture portraits very well nor do I even think about it, I did take a moment to see whether I could capture an image of my son Alex, as we rested at the base of Mount Lorette, in Kananaskis Provincial park this past fall. Unfortunately, the weather happened to be changing rapidly, so we took a few moments to decide whether we would continue with our minor ascent to a higher location. The inclement weather and the strong westerly wind subsided long enough for me to capture this brief moment during our outing.

Our summer outings are beneficial, because they allow me to transfer a few pieces of my equipment to my spry younger and very healthy son, where Alex likes to carry my tripod, my film in a separate backpack, my light meter, and periodically our water supply when we are out, and about. I do admire his endless energy, since Alex continuously reminds me that he is several steps ahead of me during any hike, or climbs. His relentless gameful chatter about my steady, yet slower climbing speed, also reminds me that I could slow him down with our food, our fly fishing gear, my backpack, and a few well-placed Lead weights...

Alex is usually not cognizant about the informative life skill seeds I tend to plant while we hike, but he does acknowledge the challenges, especially when we camp together for any extended time period. I could not think of another place I would rather be when I am outdoors, when I hike, or when I go fly fishing with my son Alex in the mountains. His comradery is priceless.

While you may not think you capture portraits well, you did. This is a wonderful photograph your son will cherish in later years and so will you. I'm 62 and still remember dragging my fathers LF camera case when I was 10, no backpacks then. Great memories for both of you, you both enjoy a great relationship and will into the future , I did because of like events you and your son are having now.

Dear Alan,

Thank you... :)

Alex is fun to be around, since he is also a great practical joker, and because of that trait I seem to be his continuous moving target. I believe that once you have your son's or daughter's attention, you can accomplish great moments together, which is not hard to do when you have them captive for more than one hour outdoors having fun, especially when their Gameboy is several kilometers away under their homework, or clothes. It happens to be a very rare moment when we do not converse with each other, while following a trail or making camp, and it is a stranger moment when Alex stops asking questions about surviving outdoors in the mountains, or how much a mountain weighs. Alex asked me that question last summer, so our discussion turned to the gravitational effects at different elevations, which led to more questions, such as the mass of the earth. His questions do not surprise me anymore, because he applies his knowledge from our previous outings together, and our previous outdoor skill set sessions.

That said, I am glad that someone such as yourself, remembers moments like this too...

Again, thank you for your comments.

I could not think of another place I would rather be when I am outdoors, when I hike, or when I go fly fishing with my son Alex in the mountains. His comradery is priceless...............

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your kind comments... :)

Andrew, I could only suggest that you make certain your young one has a healthy, nourishing supply of fresh fruit in their daily diet, such as Alex. Tripods do get heavy after a few kilometres, where father must periodically relieve the strain from the young one's shoulders, even when the youngsters push back.

Again, merci...

John- a good friend of mine who visited last week.

There have been comments made elsewhere about portraits, and focal length, and distance-
and others made about poor man's sfumato,
even more about the unimaginative 'up against the wall' style-
so I guess this one ticks all the boxes...

Slow cinema projection Petzval, 182mm, doesn't cover 4x5, at about a meter distance,
Polaroid T55-

I'm not aware of the critique of that you speak, but I think this is one of the more interesting and provocative images shown here in this thread... Execution is done very well also. Great job...

Here below, I tried to follow your advices from other threads, on being close enough to the subject.
