I took a crown graphic to Waikiki once. It was a great way to meet chicks, but I was there with my bride and children!

I try to take the 8x10 to the coast at least once a year. Why not?

I've been thinking about taking my whole plate camera with me (the kit fits into a laptop bag), but I have to fly and was planning to take my digital with one lens also. I don't want to overpack  and thus have to pay for multiple checked bags.

I've taken a 5x7 to the beach before, when I was living in California, and I've also taken it to the Delaware shore.

Took my Gowland Pocket View to Kauai (Hawaii). Worked out quite well- it fits into the same camera bag I use for a big DSLR kit, of course this means the DSLR didnt' go to Hawaii- oh well.

Nice log David. An excellent example of what to take in the midday sun - see another thread.

Diane,
Why the question? But yes I take mine - but not with the family because we don't do beach holidays. I take it to make pictures.

Steve,
Because although I am going there to take a pt/pd printing workshop, I have a full day beforehand that I can get out with a nice, relaxing LF camera. :D I wasn't sure if it was worth the cost of taking the tripod and paying to check the bags. However, the pictures that have been posted here show that it is worth it.

Yes.

China Beach, San Francisco.

The model showed up with another photographer to do a bathing suit shoot - I thought the weather was a bit cold for that kind of activity - and I though it was a bit 'rammy' of the other photographer to direct his model to walk between me and my subject.

Diane,
Go for it. There's bound to be a wealth of subject matter there, wherever there is.
If you take a look on my website you'll find numerous examples of shoreline images in b&w in three of my gallery pages. Perhaps some of them may fire you up:

Diane, beaches are wonderful, lots of things to be found there… :) I still need to scan the print of a nice shot I took on that very beach of a "pretty" jaw I found: either of a wolf, or of some *huge* dog. (Of course, that jaw then entered my collection of "things found on the beach" which encompasses lots of other smaller or bigger items… I really should spend some time and shoot them all, some day…)

Nothin' to photograph at the beach...;)

Extend the bottom legs of your pod before you get to the sand -- this will help keep sand out of the bottom leg joints. Enjoy!

Got too old and lazy to go to the beach, even without a camera. Taking an 8x10 is a great idea though, if you can do it. 12x20 even better. David: Excellent picture of the driftwood.

just make sure things are well cleaned afterward, of saltwater spray etc.

A beach or not a beach. That is the question. Close enough for the thread I guess.

And to think they're talking about tearing this historic bridge down to make way for the super size cargo ships from Taiwan. Why do we let progress do these things to us?

Ulrich: I like the look very much. I have done quite a few photos myself with the ocean and long exposures. With exposures several minutes or longer the image of the waves levels out nicely.

But I have never tried a pinhole before. Would you be willing to tell what was the time duration for your exposure on this and which film you used? I'm thinking I might like to try your technique sometime with running water.

Cheers. Bob G.

Aehm, it's not a pinhole. It's made with a Chamonix 4x5 and a f5.6/150mm Symmar

Rguinter,
Yeah somebody asked and Frank supplied a superb L.F. image. Whats your problem? You've never complained about posters who promote the perverted images by Jock Sturges that are frequently mentioned on this site. At least Franks models are above the age of consent in most Christian countries on this planet.

Pete: The photo does not bother me personally. But when it opened I was on my computer at the office with women around. This type of thing is considered inappropriate at my workplace and came up totally by surprise. I could easily have been accused of perusing a porno site and reprimanded if it had been seen.

You need to be more courteous and consider the consequences of things that you post on a site like this where most people simply do not expect to see full frontal nudity pop up in high definition on their screen. Bob G.

Courtesy would be nice, such as a link instead of a visible photo. But this is a photography website, and I do indeed expect nudity to pop up every now and again. So I'm careful about surfing this and other sites at work.

Frank: Apology accepted. I work for a small company now and it is family owned. Everyone is very courteous and there probably would not be a problem even if someone did object. All 300 of us are like one big family.

But prior to that I worked for AT&T and they had strict internet policies. Made little difference who you were in the company and people did lose their jobs over things that seemed just as trivial. Cheers. Bob G.

How true. Our IT dept installed tracking software on the server some time ago. And they have access to view what we have on our screens at any time without notice. This was done when a select few were found abusing the privilege of personal browsing.

So I'm careful about where I go and this is one of the few sites I peruse regularly for personal use. Very upscale and professional through and through. The only others I use regularly are my personal email and financial tracking sites.

Just the way it has become at many companies these days. Bob G.

Marko: A good thought but all these things are forbidden at our site... no photos because we are a sensitive homeland security site. No personal electronic devices unless they are pre-approved and intrinsically safe which most are not. I have a 6-year old Motorola cell phone which is intrinsically safe and I can carry this when visiting our other sites.

Gee I wish I had more interesting LF beach photos to show and keep this thread on track. Alas I do not. Perhaps some others do.

And finally another interesting thought. I suspect there might be 11 types of people... some may only partially understand binary. So would you count them as a 01, 10, or 11?

You're making me miss those days of boolean algebra and digital circuit theory: where everything was 0 and 1, black and white, on and off, with AND-gates, OR-gates, etc. Oh they were so much fun weren't they? Perhaps someday I'll aspire to be a photographer instead. I can only hope. Cheers. Bob G.

Or, perhaps rather than censoring this site, you could just do some work
when you're at work, rather than surfing the 'net.

Who knows? Maybe your productivity gains might be sufficient enough for you to get a promotion and your own (private) office with it?
