I believe it's a cultural thing. I work as a production artist building advertising for a company with offices world wide. My European guys always seems to use "adds" instead of "ads."

I guess the global dominance of the American Cultural Industry (movies, TV, magazines) has really blinded North Americans to cultural differences in the English language; let alone wiping out much of the British influence in Canadian English over the last 10-20 years.

Since "ads" and "adds" are contractions anyways how could one spell them wrong?

It really comes down to several things. Language is cultural. Cultural evolution is not necessarily logical. English is a fusion language (low german base, infused with early Norman French and picked-up alot of other influences along the way). English does not have a single formal institution to define and enforce it's rules (like l'Academie Francaise does for French). This is how it becomes acceptable to spell "colo(u)r" one way in North America and another way in the rest of the world, or contract "ad(d)" one way in some places and another way in another place. Maybe it has something to do with why Americans pronounce lieutenant and Canadians and Brits pronounce the same word "leftenant."

However, we all digress... language has little to do with large format photography, let alone this thread. I guess we'll all have to agree to disagree, keep an open mind, move on and appreciate the differences that living in this free society allows us to celebrate!

Eye would like to se a new forum created that cud be called the Spelling and Grammer Forum And I am shure that the mantainer of this forum could sit thisone up so that when ever some one adds (I'd better chek that word) a post that Qritisizes sum one's spelling or grammer thier post would auto matically besent to that new forum and they can debate an qritisize eachother allday and we can keep thisone for Large Format Photography.
