At least they've gotten away from calling these fiascos "controlled burns".

Rockfall update: Guests will be allowed to return to the Ahwahnee at 4:00 PM PDT today. Staff who live in nearby dorms will also be allowed to return.

The Big Meadow Fire is 2200 ac and is 10% contained. Big Oak Flat Road from Crane Flat to the Valley floor is closed. Crane Flat campground and Foresta have been evacuated. Additional fire fighting resources have been ordered.

The fire is burning in brush and dead fuels in the area of the 1990 A-Rock fire. Apparently, the winds went 'out of prescription' soon after the prescribed fire was ignited. Erratic winds caused the fire to spot over a control line, and 'off to the races'.

My wife works in Yosemite and had to be evacuated from her dorm near the Ahwahnee. She said that the smoke from the fire is obnoxious, and ash is falling on the valley floor.

Highway 120 is open to Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Pass.

A tough August in Yosemite, indeed.

I hope so too, John. The Big Meadow barn is really something.

Unfortunately, updates on the fire have been slow in coming. It was 2200+ac yesterday afternoon; with 10% containment. There was minor damage to one residence. No injuries have been reported.

I just looked at the CalFire Situation Report; The Big Meadow fire is listed at 3,506 acres - 30% contained as of 1:00PM PDT today.

The smoke was really bad this morning here in Columbia. Ack!

Yosemite is great but I also, really like Sequoia Park. Sequoia might just be my favorite park I have visited.
I just love the big trees..

Its funny you should mention Sequoia.
I just read that the rangers found a huge marijuana plantation near Crystal Cavern!

IMHO, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Yosemite are all treasures. In the absence of any iconic landmarks such as Half Dome or Morro Rock (or crowds,) I don't think I could tell the difference between them. Elevation provides a greater contrast than the name on the entrance reciept. Being at 10,000' in Yosemite looks a lot like 10,000' in Sequoia.
