Looking for B&W lens.

Hi. My name is Moo.
I'm in UK.
I'm just a student who falling in love with B&W.


I'm looking for lens like this "not too expensive , old school character , come with shutter and aperture blades , good tone come before sharpness but still really sharp enough , not bad with color , really good with B&W , big enough for my 6x24 and 8x10 ".
I'll shoot landscape , seascape and food.
I'm using Adox film for 4x5 and 120 format , kodak ektar 100 for 120 format.
I'll get lee filter system to use with them.

If you are looking for one lens to use with both your 6x24 panoramic and 8x10 cameras, you should first figure out what focal length of lens your panoramic camera is setup to use. (You may need to check with your camera's manufacturer.) That will be the most significant limiting factor in your lens choices, so start there.

If you're intending to shoot landscapes, seascapes, and food (still life?) you'll likely want at least two lenses. One wider one for use with the 6x24 and the 8x10 landscape/seascapes and then a normal or longer lens for 8x10 still life work.

It may also be make it easier for others here to offer suggestions if you provide us information about the specific make and model of 6x24 camera you're using.

And as for the characteristics of the lens you're looking for, the criteria you've listed are very subjective. Another approach to take would be to list the names of some of the large format photographers whose work you admire or wish to emulate. Many people here will likely know the equipment used by those photographers.

OK. Start with this.
Maximum longest lens I'm looking is 390mm.
Widest lens I'm looking for is 120mm.
My 6x24 camera can take any lens cause I'm going to make it myself.
Or I'll use Fotoman 624 or Gaoersi 624.
Food I'm going to shoot will be in studio.
Actually I like B&W photo from Leica lens.
Now I've got Nikon APO-Nikkor 300mm f9 lens Alphax shutter.
Price I'm looking for will not too expensive for a student like me.
If you recommend for the lens , could you please give me a reference price too.


Ps. Actually I'm using 4x5 format on Chamonix camera , not a 8x10 format.

There are easily hundreds of types lenses available for Leica cameras, so that doesn't really help narrow things down! Anyway...

A lens that will work well for both 6x24cm and 4x5in work is the Schneider Claron-G 210mm f/9. You should be able to get one in excellent condition mounted in a modern Copal shutter for between 200-300$US, although I've seen them go for as little as 125$US in rough but still usable condition. On the 6x24 camera it'll be a good wide-angle lens, on the 4x5 it'll work as a slightly longer than normal lens suitable for portraiture and still life photography. It will work perfectly well for both color and b&w photography. Its primary drawback is that it's a bit dim with a maximum aperture of only f/9 (although I've never found this to be a problem.)

Other good options might be the Fujinon 250mm f/6.3 or the older Fujinon 250mm f/6.7 lenses. Depending on the condition of the lens, you're looking at around 300-500$US. Both of those are personal favorites of mine.

You might also look into some of the older Schneider Symmar convertible lenses like the 180/315mm or the 210/370mm. The shorter focal length could be used on the 4x5 camera, and I'd imagine the longer focal lengths would cover the 6x24, but I don't have any firsthand experience with these lenses. I've often seen them sell for around 200-300$US.

look for a wollensak 1a triple convertible (13 20 25 )
it won't be TOO expensive, and it will cover 11x14 without
a problem .. it doesn't have a flash syc ( betax shutter ) ..

Yep, that's what I was thinking too. Or one of the Turner Reich triples might be nice too.

Actualy, a lens that performs good with color, as all modern lenses do, are well suited for B&W.
And then there are (very) old lenses that were designed before the color era that perform less with color because they are not corrected for color.

It is that simple !!!
Unless you are after a certain softness or what ever, than you will need to dig into the old lens department.
Having said that: there is plenty of reading to do here....

Have you also thought about the developer for the Adox? PMK Pyro works well with this film, and may give you much of what you're looking for - and have a bigger impact than lense choice, perhaps.

For the subject matter you describe, I'd probably choose a shorter lense around the 120mm focal length, and a longer one, perhaps around 300mm. I'd guess that either the Nikkor or Fuji 300mm f/9 lenses would cover 6x24 as they cover 8x10 with a little movement.
