I tried my first B&W scan with my Nikon SC 9000 and although the preview looked great the final scans ( using Silverfast set to scan with 16-Bit Grayscale ) were horrible. Banding and ghosting... I thought that the scanner was broken until I repeated the scan but this time setting silverfast to scan in 48-Bit color... and then it looked just fine. I was using Nikon's 120 Glass carrier The negative strip was not masked.

Has anyone seen this before?

I have the Nikon 9000ED and have seen something like this, but not exactly the same, when I inadvertently scanned a b&w negative with Digital ICE turned on. Try the scan again with ICE turned off - everything turned off.

If you still have some banding turn on the superfine scan feature. Also, use the adhesive strips supplied by Nikon to exactly mask to the image area of the frame. Even showing a little bit of the clear border between frames will produce a flare darkened band along the side of the scan.

BTW - nice image.

Dear Bill,

Thanks...

I am using Silverfast AI. I am not sure if Silvertast even has ICE... But I am begining to think the the banding is caused by the lack of masking as 6X6 transparencies do not give me a problem...
