Could you explain why a lens would be sold to me without ring or flange for mounting i.e., where do you obtain such things? Point is I've bought/sold seven lenses to try out and this last one, a wide field ektar 250mm has nothing with it to attach it to the Deardorf 8x10 lensboard. All the other lenses came with this the ring/flange.

Why would the ring/flange not be sold with the lens?!

the rings get lost or borrowed. this all started at the beginning of time when the first photographer lost his retaining ring while setting up for a portrait of a t rex.

hot glue works well and it's usually removable. or cut a hole just right so you can screw the lens into it, worked for me. also cut a hole out of a square piece of plastic and use that as a flange.

Probably got lost over time or so......
SK Grims makes them for a price or you can check your other lenses if one fits so you can try the lens.....

Also consider a universal lens adaptor (or iris clamp). Quick and easy way of mounting lenses. I have one that I use with a Sinar shutter. Great for barrel lenses!

Here are some shots of one (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?t=49171).

Presumably because the seller didn't have it. If you bought it sight unseen the seller should have disclosed its absence IMHO.

I've made several lensboards out of cardboard, plastic, and other materials, for lenses that didn't have a mounting ring. You can just tape the lens in there, or whatever else (glue, like vinny said)

Here was a quick one, to test out lenses, lens had no mounting ring, and no shutter. Nothing was "permanent" on this mount, easy to try out old lenses with. Once you find what works, then make it out of stronger materials :)

Depending on where you live, there may be a machine shop in your area. They are usually happy to make a custom part for you. All you have to do is show them something or explain what you want.

On the other hand, as Archphoto has pointed out, SK Grimes knows exactly (http://www.skgrimes.com/adapter/index.htm) what needs to be done, they do it all the time, and they do it perfectly.

Please don't use ring clamps. I have seen a lot of lens barrels damaged that way.

Is the WF Ektar in an Ilex 5 as most are? If so, a mounting flange for the Ilex 5 is not difficult to find nor terribly expensive. Check with Midwest Photo; they often have them available. Grimes usually has them in stock on the shelf. Be sure to include the type lens with your request since some of the Ilex's for Kodak were a little different.

Having the proper flange is the right way and the safest way to mount the lens. It will also make for an easier sale should you decide not to keep the lens.

What Will said, especially with a big, heavy lens like the 250 WFE in Ilex 5. I have a bunch of small lenses in barrel that I'd happily try with a kludged-up mount, but I wouldn't risk mounting the big Ektar without a proper flange.

Equinox can probably set you up with a proper flange.

SRB (http://www.srb-griturn.com/index.asp) in the UK could probably make a range of flanges, and also Compur/Copal retaining rings if we lobbied them. Unlike S.K.Grimes they are geared up to making quantities at competitive prices.

A two-year-old thread with some other possibilities...

Thanks for the feedback. I went Wil and Oren's advice ie. with the Midwest Photo ($29) vs Grimes ($69). With luck, my "new" Ektar won't fall off of the homemade lensboard and strike a rock. If I sell it the next fellow doesn't have to deal with it.
