About 72 mm XL and 90 mm XL, I wonder if the thread/diameter for the Center Filter is the same for both lenses ?

As you can see here (http://www.schneideroptics.com/pdfs/photo/LensCharts.pdf) the SA XL 72 mm needs CF IV b, M 95 x 1 mm; the 90mm needs CF III b, M 82 x 0,75 mm.

Dear Peter,
It seems to me the 90 XL needs :
5.6/90 XL IVa 96° 201 110° 259

Per the Schneider chart, the 90mm SA XL takes the IVa CF (1.5 stops edge correction), the 72mm SA XL takes either the IVa or IVb (1.5 or 2.0 stops edge correction, respectively). For many applications (particularly if one uses only negative film), the IVa can be shared by both lenses, as the CF filter threads and dimensions are otherwise identical, and with neg film an additional 0.5 stop of correction won't make much difference.

The IIIb CF is used on the 90mm SA, not the SA XL.

Yes the filter thread diameter is the same for the 72 XL and the 90 XL. They are both M 95 x 1 mm

The non XL 5.6 90 uses M 82 x 0,75 mm. And the 8/90 uses something even smaller.

The filter for 90XL is a IIa and for the 72XL IVb (IVa as well but I'm not sure what the difference is).

So the filters are not supposed to be interchangeable for reasons of light fall off rate and angle of view but you might get away with it. I don't know for sure because I don't have those filters.

But with both the 72XL and the 90XL on 4x5 you have 48mm/42mm (more for the 90XL) of rise and shift. That means you probably won't need centre filter for most images unless you are using extreme rise/shift at wide apertures. On 5x7 with 72XL, then you probably do need centre filter but it depens what you are photographing. You can figure that one.

p.s. my brochure is not the current one so things may have changed from around 2001.

Dear Peter,
It seems to me the 90 XL needs :
5.6/90 XL IVa 96° 201 110° 259
Sorry, wrong line

Thank you all.
Well, I will shoot mostly portraits and interiors, natural light.
Reading the chart, is see that 72 XL is "also usable (with) CENTER-FILTER IVa".
I wonder if IVb would also be usable with 90 XL, knowing that they have different angle of view and image circle :
5.6/72 XL IVb 98° 166 115° 229
5.6/90 XL IVa 96° 201 110° 259
I'm asking because I might have the IVb for half the price of IVa.:p
