June is for summer, summer is for light…

Taken with a poor man's soft focus "lens", a plain and simple magnifying glass that gives a focal length of about 200mm and f/2.6… Light from a window, a beautiful evening far north, three nightlights for the highlights…

Charten 5x7, magnifying glass, Fomapan 100.

I just joined the forum and I'm just getting back into LF after several years. May I post an older portrait? Taken with a Calumet CC401, Caltar II E 210mm, Ektachrome 100.

My first portrait post. This is a scan from a very cheap flatbed scanner of an 8x10 enlargement of a Shanghai 100 4x5 negative, Caltar 210 at f6.8, 1/60. I got into LF last fall because my landscapes lacked something, but since then have become interested in the problem of making a portrait (as opposed to finding or capturing the decisive moment). This interest may also have something to do with the fact that I don't always have a landscape, but I do always have, more or less, willing models...

Shot in the living room with a cheap 500w halogen security light and two 250w photo flood bulbs I bought in a thrift shop. Please feel free to criticism or make suggestions for improvement, as I am here to learn. The corners are soft in the print, I think because I enlarge using a 127mm taking lens in a Graflarger. I could fix this, I guess, by burning them in.

Tim, this is a very beautiful portrait !
I find there is a natural and direct atmosphere.
Light can always be worked until you fill it is enough.

Wally and everyone very nice portraits. Here is my first. It is an 11x14 shot on x-ray film. My youngest son in the Redwoods on the campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz. I can only show an 8x10 crop due to my scanner. I used my Hybrid Voigtlander Euroscop 18" lens at f-11 and about 1/2 second for the exposure. This is printed on some 1976 Azo and is un-toned.

My daughter graduated with the lad second from left last row. He is a fan of good photography and prevailed on me to come and make a galli picture of his family on the occasion of the high school graduation of the lassie in front. For this I was handsomely paid with 2 fine bottles of wine and a filet mignon as big as 2 fists.

eastman improved #2 7X11 format camera with 18" Verito. I couldn't afford to booger it up so I took the proven winners.

f5 - ish. I think I was the evenings entertainment. You show up with a camera as big as a dog house and start moving the lawn furniture around, it attracts attention.

I was thinking: Let's call it f/4 instead just for fun.

In terms of depth-of-field, an 18 inch (457) lens at f/4 is roughly equivalent to a 9-inch (228mm) lens at f/2, or a 4.5 inch (114mm) lens at f/1.0

Correct my math if wrong, but... That's one heck of a lens.

I used just a bit of rear tilt. I had a lovely plane of faces that worked well for that. Notice the feet of the lad standing in the back row are nearly gone from blur. Also I had pre-set the swing on the bench before anyone sat down.

Sunday afternoon coffee can be a ritual for some. And being a ritual, it's also a kind of theater performance, which can easily be imitated. Especially if the actor assumes the role of grown-ups. It does not matter that there is water in the cup... (The cookie (leaf) was her own invention, and in hindsight, it would be lacking something without it...)

She is growing to be my main portrait subject, it seems:

Awesome set up Eddie. Hope I get to see it in person some day. I have a bonafide 25 inch Voigtlander but they sacrificed the f4 after they left 21 inch so the casing is the same size, but it's longer and maybe f5 or so.

eddie,, plenty of working distance and nice tight crop,, well tighter... and look at that background is that an 11x14 image..?

thanks steve. it is an 8x10 shot. i had it on my 11x14 today but i could not get my camera stand out the door (bad back) and so i shot more 8x10 today. the 11x14 head shot looks awesome i just need more light. stay tuned for todays 8x10 images....they are tighter.

well, i was at it again today. tighter head shots were in order. i was very challenged but the long exposure times. they were in the 11-12 second range....moe moe is very good at holding still but these times really push it. i will build a head brace this week. this should help a lot.

collodion on 8x10 aluminum. 24 inch petzval at f4.5ish just shy of 1:1. about 11 seconds ( a bit over exposed at that)

(a few more over in the still life thread)

got to play with my new Hermagis petzval today. ran into some hurdles with rain, chemistry, and the like but got some before the clouds rained down.

24inch f 4.5 wide open. about 35 inches of extension. (note the 8x8 lens board) 10 seconds.

a few from yesterday. my 1st ever "pregnancy" shots.

these are 8x10 negs printed on 11x14 arches platine paper. VDB. a bit too much light coming from the right IMO. ( i am looking for a paper with a bit less texture.) shot with my digital camera....but you get he idea.

i will make some silver prints tonight and try and correct my lighting errors with some burning and dodging.

Eddie, Joe, and Alexey, it's great to see a three professional collodion portraits on the same screen. All are nice, and unique, as befitting the process and artist.

Yup, we used to complain about digital technology running the film companies out of business. Now it turns out that wet-plate photography is the big threat!

Beautiful work!
