View Full Version : Getting the most accurate color; V750 + 4x5 ProS + Silverfast 6.6
I can't add color equipment to my darkroom anytime soon, so I have been scanning color negs so I can get a peek. I calibrate it using the included Monaco EZColor thing, but apparently that only works for transparencies. The color is a bit wonky, even using the corrective stuff. Sometimes heightened reds/magentas, sometimes weird blues. It's hard to describe, but it's fairly obvious. I'm no whiz at this scanning stuff, but I can't seem to find info on color negs and silverfast 6.6 .. I get decent accuracy on my transparency scans, anyone have different strategy for c41?
Cheers

In Silverfast use the setting for negative, then a pop-up allows you to choose the type of negative film. When I choose the setting for the C41 film I am using I get perfect color in the scan.
Oh... Dangs, lucky you! I, however, am not getting perfect color with the supplied negative settings. I can't be sure, but the scans seem to be picking up a lot of the red in the film base..

What film are you scanning, and what settings are you using?

Try clicking on the "Expert" button in Negafix (The little head with the mortarboard). When you do this you can manually adjust the way that Negafix deals with the film base and therefore the colours. You need to adjust the sliders so that they just border the image histogram (usually towards the right of the whole histogram - it is fairly obvious). It seems strange at first but works very well for problem films.

An alternative is to use the colorneg PS plugin. One thing I have learned is there doesn't appear to be any perfect solution, you almost always have to do some tweaking in post process.
