So I'm looking for a new or used backpack for a 4x5 field camera. I was told to look into a Domke Outpack, but for the life of me I can't find an image of one nor can I find a model number. Anyone have the bag or the model #?

I'm pretty sure Domke discontinued the Outpack a while ago - seems like the Armadillo has gon ethe same way? I can recommend the Tamrac Adventure 10 as a good, lightweight, pack that will hold LF gear. What are you planning to put into it?

Highly recommend that you take a look at Photobackpacker.com. Excellent products with even better support from Bruce. Customizes to your needs and budgets, real Kelty or bigger packs modified for LF use but with true hiking harness, and carriers that work and protect your gear. Most satisfying (no connection, just extremely contented customer after many purchases and multiple packs for different cameras).

I had a Domke Outpack until I sold it just recently. I'd suggest looking around for another backpack even if you can find an Outpack. There was nothing wrong with the one I had, it did the job just fine, but even empty it was pretty heavy. I prefer the F64 backpacks myself because they're pretty light when they're empty and mine provided good protection the one time I fell on it. There are plenty of backpacks around but the source LJ Segil mentioned sounds real good. I've always thought the Keltys and similar packs made for hiking would be the best but I never wanted to try to adapt them to photography use. It sounds like Photobackpacker does that for you.

I got a pack from this guy and have been very happy with it... I use an 8x10 and it fits a lot of stuff. There is a smaller one as well...

^ Another vote here for the photobackpacker systems. I love my Granite Gear set up he did for me. I have used the Domke Outpack, and the LowePro Treker II and both wieghed quite a bit more and held less gear than my current system.

Paul,

I'm looking at taking 1 4x5 field camera. Box of film (50ct) maybe 10 film holders, 1 lens (possible with the camera or 2 lens), light meter, changing bag, paper & pen, Bogen tripod, maybe a filter or 2. that kinda stuff.

With care, I can get that amount of stuff in a large book pack. Not the greatest thing to carry.

For comfort and room I use an old panel loading, internal frame Osprey pack. It holds all of my 4x5 equipment (your list and a bit more) and a Leica and 2-3 lenses. Since my pack was discontinued ages ago, I would go to Photobackpacker today. I did buy one of his cases for my Zone VI. Perfect!

I believe that I have two Outbacks; at least, I know they're both Domke. Very well made. But as Brian suggests, they're relatively heavy. I use them for my 35mm kit and 2 1/4" kits, each of which includes several lenses. Indeed, they've been discontinued.

As to service, I needed some different sized dividers than what I had. I called the company, and they custom made a whole bunch of them and charged me a reasonable price. I was impressed, since as we discussed, the bags had been discontinued.

When I get a backpack for my 6x9 view camera, I'm going photobackpacker.com. It looks like a good product and lightweight.
