Used one while a student at Portfolio Center back in the '80s on a Calumet basic 4x5. I liked it better than a dark cloth (messes with my hair). The image is still upside down.

Best,

It does its job very well...it is intended to allow the photographer to see the ground glass without having to use a cloth. I have found that it excludes light better than a cloth and keeps the image as bright as possible. As Darr mentioned, it leaves the image inverted instead of righting it like the 45-degree finders do, but most of us aren't much bothered by that. :)

Yes, and it does work well in certain light levels. However, it could lead to bad habits in the field if you are not accustomed to using a darkcloth when removing the darkslide; a good practice, in my opinion. Works well for interiors and low light level subjects. Not practical if you wish to use a loupe.
