View Full Version : Fraction Magazine #6
Kirk Gittings

The fine online magazine, Fraction, did an issue on New Mexico photographers and included a nice little portfolio of my work. Many thanks to editors David Bram and Joshua Spees. All of the work is 4x5 except the color interior which is a 5D stitch.
Issue 6 is now up and running. Issue 6 focuses on some of our local New Mexico photographers. New Mexico has a long history of photography and photographers, from Ansel Adam's visits, to Laura Gilpin, and Elliot Porter. New Mexico has been an inspiration to many and we wanted to dedicate an issue to some of the photographers living and working in the state today. The issue includes work from Jeff Willis, Jim Stone, Debbie Fleming Caffery, Kirk Gittings, and Carlan Tapp. Two new book reviews are up and check out David Bram's APUG group show which went up last month as well as Melanie McWhorter's Dress Show if you haven't already seen them.
We have a lot more planned over the next couple of months including a new group show next month and our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY issue due out in May. That one should be a blow out as we have a lot planned for the issue. Also coming up we are going to be adding some books to the blog. We have been getting more and more books in the last few months to review and some are slipping through the cracks due to our lack of time available for reviews so we will be posting some great books on the blog to give you a chance to check them out.
Enjoy Issue 6 and as always thanks for looking.

Kirk
Good job. I always enjoy looking at your work. I'd love to run my latest project by you if I had the time. Kids, job and kids always seems to get in the way. I'll have to bookmark the magazine site and check back often.

Kirk, some really fine work. You have your own way of seeing, not always easy to accomplish in this medium. Bravo!
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Merg. You too! I have always found the SW to be a strange and magical place.

Hi Kirk,
Thank you for the link... I've not heard of that online magazine before. It's now bookmarked. :)
Great images... especially enjoyed landscape images #2 and #6.
Thank you.
Cheers

Thanks guys.
#2 and #6 are two of my favorites. To me the big landscapes, when they work, are especially rewarding. I always find the variety of peoples aesthetic opinions fascinating. Between here and Luminous Landscape people have mentioned now 2,4,5,6 and 15 as their favorites. FWIW.....with the exception of 12 and 14 which are new, all of these have been widely published, exhibited and are in many collections (10 is soon to be a major poster for the state of New Mexico), and as far as fine art print sales go, 12 has been the best seller followed by 14 and 10!

Superb work indeed. Couldn't agree more on the #2 and #6, stunning compositions!
Congratulations!
Your work is inspirational. It's been entirely too long since I was last in New Mexico.
No one needs to post pictures as movies. I can't see much because they do it all except the front page with flash. It is how they do their CMS but it is brain dead.
I'll go fire up my flash browser just because it's Kirk.
Very fine indeed.

Always nice to see your work getting extra ink (or, ether), Kirk.
It's difficult to pick favorites out of those selected for this publication. Personally, I prefer the "body of work" approach, where your ability to portray the essence, the scope of the SW really shines.

Nice work Kirk, I enjoyed looking through your magazine, and it's great to see another photographic magazine out there!
As Ralph said, it's really nice to be able to see a body of work from a photographer, you can get a feel for the message contained within the images.

Thanks all. Does anyone feel that the lack of captions/titles is much of a problem? I would have had to do it like Jim Stone's portfolio in the same article and I didn't find that very visually appealing. The lack of captions/titles makes the images stand completely on their own however which is kind of a good thing.

Well done, Kirk. I think the caption on screen would distract from the image, but it would be nice to have it available somewhere else. Besides Fajada Butte, of course, I like 16.

Many of your images I found to be a lot more than just nice, more like extraordinary. Your work definitely exhibits an abundance of extreme values with rich blacks and creamy whites that I am personally drawn to. The visual drama and the mood of the land captured in your images is very powerful to say the least. Job well done.
Over the holidays I had the experience of traveling through New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. Desert light is truly amazing with its low vapor content. It became clear to me that the land needs to be complemented with clouds before the taking of a photograph can be executed. I was wondering if you could tell me when the rainy season or best times for clouds is in your neighborhood?

I appreciate your kind words Stephen.
Our "monsoon" season, as it is actually called, is August. But it is erratic and one needs to schedule travel times loosely. Let me know if you are coming down. We can grab a cup of java.

Great Stuff! And thanks for the link to the magazine, seeing others work inspires me...
And yes, the SW is a strange and magical place, that's why I moved to the bottom left side of the country!

I feel the spiritual and mystical qualities of the images work well without titles. It allows me to interact with the image without direction.
Great work!

Congratulations, Kirk!
Monochrome is a wonderful tool for imaging the formations and ruins of the southwest and you have used it superbly.
Well done.

Fantastic Kirk. I love #6 in their online slideshow of your work. I think I first saw it in VC a few years back and I simply love the feeling of the shot. Where was the shot taken anyway?
Congrats again!

Wow, thanks guys. I appreciate it.
