Celebrated Marin photographer Pirkle Jones, a colleague of Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange whose photographs of the Black Panthers caused a furor when they were exhibited at San Francisco's de Young Museum in 1968, died March 15 at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Rafael. He was 95.

Saddened to hear the news.

I first met Pirkle when I was a lad of thirteen. We worked in the darkroom making index prints for the 1954 exhibit, Perceptions, which opened at the San Francisco Museum of Art that year. He taught me about selenium toning. Pirkle had a good sense of humor and was fun to be with. He will be missed, but fortunately his work will be available for this, and future generations to appreciate.

This is quiet, but significant loss to photography.

Philip Hyde, who attended the California School of Fine Arts with Pirkel, also passed away within the past two years.
