It’s the transition – water to land – that produces so much fun drama for this photographer :rolleyes: .

I’d enjoy seeing your favorite examples.

Along coastal Washington, I find a lot of weird stuff arriving on the tide. Not all of it’s worth a sheet of film – last week, I picked up a rusty soda can (I think) with Japanese writing. But so much of what I discover is. And of course the tide tosses-up new subjects every day. Make that twice a day.

This gigantic trunk floated out of the nearby Olympic rain forest & crashed here – where the sun bleaches it against coffee-colored sands. Despite the difficult mid-day contrast and simple composition, I thought the primitive beat-up shape was still worth a shot. Looks like a dinosaur’s thigh bone. The left side is 7 or 8 feet tall! Wish there was something better for scale than my footprints passing by in the foreground.

A month later the log was gone. It will return some stormy day.

Each May, the big trees are surprised by this melt-water creek at their feet.

Perhaps that’s just my imagination.

Come July, no trace of the stream remains. (Wenatchee Nat'l Forest at 5,000 feet, Washington state)

Was camped at Horsetooth Reservoir while attending the Foto3 last June. I looked out the window of my camper trailer one morning to see this light from the predawn. The sun was right behind the ridge to the left of the notch.

I jumped out of the trailer, grabbed my Super Graphic, tripod, and a couple of film holders out of my car. I had time to make two exposures before the sun came over the ridge. That changed everything...

Bah....who needs mud, rocks, weeds, or females, when you've got pollution swirling in your foreground!

This from a so-so-scan of a so-so contact print of a rather pleasant negative, 4x5, Ilford Delta 100, 90 mm Fujinon, f45 at 1 second. Since I was there taking pictures of it, the dam will soon go away, but the pollution likely will remain!

Ottsville Creek PA, by Michael and Paula's home/studio, taken with a Wehman 8x10 on Astia 100F using a Fuji A 240mm, shot at f/32, 15 second exposure, a little too long to hold the highlights but a shorter exposure would have lost the detail on the shadowed side of the creek. Still learning how to handle these little problems, doubt I'll ever finish learning. Maybe shooting with color negative film could have handled the dynamic range better, but I still prefer transparencies (both for their look and easier scanning, at least for me). Suggestions (constructive or otherwise) welcomed.

Yes, the second one misses the mark. I think this is one of the more difficult subjects - almost as hard as photos in the forest. I have stayed away for years, but I am giving it a try again.

The images being posted here are an inspiration. Beautiful work. Water has always been my favorite subject to photograph, but until recently, I've tried to avoid the inevitable garbage that goes with territory. I'll never love pollution, but some of it is intriguing.

Your tranquil Oregon scene reminded me of this one “up the beach” in Washington, painted in high-noon contrast.

I tried to find log-shapes to “echo” the distant rocks: in this case, the bright log’s triangular tip (on left) points to the triangular sea stack; and the curvy log (high on right) mimics the black rock – but this may not be too apparent in such a busy foreground.

A yellow filter helped darken the hazy-bright blue sky :cool: . And my 240mm lens was so close to the logs, I had to use f/32 and generous front-forward tilt to achieve focus, near and far.

Yes, that's Sunbeam dam on a popular whitewater stretch of the upper main Salmon River. Boaters only run the dam in high water, which usually peaks the second or third week of June. I saw some kayakers put on Camas Creek to access the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, in the Frank Church Wilderness, last week. Absolutely insane, it drops 1400 feet in about 11 miles and makes the North Fork of the Payette river look like a beginners creek!

Plenty of great inspiration for me here. My first post of a photo. Made with ERA 100 film, Fotoman 45PS with 90mm lens. I had carried my tripod down to the rocks, then discovered I'd left the camera mounting plate back at the accommodation. So this was shot hand-held, braced, at 1/15 and f/32.

As my first post of an image on this forum, and in celebration of making the first scan from my new Epson V750, here is Espada Aqueduct, Stream and Algae.

This is the creek under the Espada Aqueduct (ca. 1731), which carries the Espada Acequia to its mission compound from further upstream along the San Antonio River of which this creek is a tributary. It's an old image, made in 1993 on 4x5 FP4, using an 8-1/2" Ilex Paragon on a Calumet 45nx, 8 seconds at f/32.

To say that I'm tickled with the results from the Epson would be an understatement. I scanned in 16-bit grayscale at 2400 spi, and used a radius under 1 pixel for basic corrective sharpening. I was expecting much less.

Those are gorgeous Joel. I'm assuming that many others, like me, are too chicken and too cheap to shoot LF colour. That's why there is so much B&W. If I knew I had a half decent chance to get images like these, I just might take a plunge into colour.

Thanks, Sly. Actually, it's pretty easy if you already have a 4x5. I have seen several posters on this forum that use the Dayi 6x12 or 6x17 panoramic backs on 4x5 cameras. I think that there are focal length limitations with the 6x17 back.

Not really even vaguely approaching the quality of the other images in this thread, but I have little to no shame so will post anyway. Water is just over to the left a little bit beyond the edge. Canham 8x10, Provia 100F converted to B&W in PS raw, Cooke XVa, f/64 for a little while. Actual true B&W film shot at the same time pending development by Dr5, so this will have to do for now. Color added little post scanning other than a funky magenta cast.

ok, I am apologizing now..I have never uploading any photography to this site...so I am popping the cherry!

Film is Efke 25 4x5, shot at 25. Some serious tilt, had fun. Lens is a 90mm 4.6 on a Toyo Field camera. This is at Chincoteague Island, VA this past June.

ok so now I know I can upload more than 1 picture at a time...Chincoteague Island again, same 90mm Nikkor lens. I had alot of fun with the 90mm but the trip made it clear I should have a longer lens, so I got a 300 W Fuji, havent shot anything with it yet but stand by!

Just returned from nice vacation on Mexican Gulf. Here's one pic from there (developed in resort bathroom) Sinar F2, 72mm SA XL. F22, 15mins. Mid day about 1:30PM very sunny and windy day (waves actually been pretty high:))

Sorry, here's more tech info ...

In front of the lens - Schneider #4b center filter (2 stops) without it falloff on 72mm is rather bad. Cokin X-Pro 130mm x121 ND soft grad for 1st 5mins of exposure (-2 stops on the sky).

Behind the lens in Xenophone holder - 2 4x4" gel filters - Kodak #96 (ND 3.0 - 10 stops!) and Kodak #21 Orange (2 stops).

Initial exposure set with DSLR + reciprocity calculation, then couple of polaroids.

Having ND grad all the time produced unreal sky - that's why I used it only for 1/3 of the time.

What else do you do on empty beach during hot day:)

PS. I did few more other locations using "STINKY" color process that I'm experimenting with (see portraits) but those still need to be developed, if something will turn out I'll post.

Here are couple of field taken "alt" vacation pics:) - few people asked me if it works in the field - somehow. Doing that in studio is much easier. Anyway, here's color neg:

And here's finiky B/W positive, those are hard in the field. I'm getting some Stannous Chloride to see if it will help to harden emulsion. Quality is pretty laughable even by wet plate standards, but it yields ISO 800 which is pretty much unheard on 4x5's:

I'll experiment more on models in studio to fine tune process :eek:

According to my records, the exposure time was 2 seconds.

What I found interesting is that these red stones, which are scattered along the creek near the Aspen Campground, are granite. I believe the color comes from some type of mineral stain, but don't know for certain. I have seen granite that is very pink in color, but not any so red.

I'll say "Yes!" too. I like all the triangles at bottom (ice, soil, grass) that mirror the triangles of the mountain. Like a reflection. And the curves & swirls in the middle provide a pleasing contrast.
