Great Skuas ''become possessed with a sense of exclusive ownership''. They sound just like Americans....kidding, I'm kidding, just a bit of fun right, give me a break;-)

Bonxies are Great Skuas. ...

In the US, and no doubt other places, skuas are know as jaegers. So the Great Skua or Bonxie is the Great Jaeger.

... the Great Skua or Bonxie is the Great Jaeger.

My field guide is old enough to have bird names in various European languages. Although variants of Jaeger mean 'hunter' in many N. European countries, only the Dutch seem to call skuas by such a relatively noble name. In Sweden they are a kind of 'labb', which refers to their big feet and awkward rolling gait when walking. 'Bonxie' in Shetland also means a dumpy old woman, so I suspect the root is the same there. In German they're 'robber gulls', which gets closest to the truth.

Despite their generally unsavoury behaviour great skuas haven't any reputation for evil in most folklore, unlike, say, ravens, who are admired by city-dwelling twitchers but generally despised as pernicious killers out in the country. Arctic skuas are gorgeous birds - seeing one raiding a flock of feeding terns is like high-speed ballet. Fishermen have a soft spot for them rather like the myths that grew up around albatrosses in the Southern Oceans.

One of the themes that has emerged from my Scottish photography is a sense of deep time. The marks of human history are plain and obvious in the form and ecology of the landscape, but also the deeper shapings from weather patterns, ice ages and other, longer-term geological processes.

Names are a surprisingly robust, if somewhat unreliable, tracer of former times. My own name is a Norse loan word into gaelic, and maps of North-West Scotland are scattered with similar borrowings which, like odd pieces of soapstone among the glacial rubble, tell a story that I think is worth attending to. If the gulls, gannets, petrels and skuas would only stand still long enough I'd be photographing them as part of the project.

Topshell, and the billion year old beach. East of Garvie Bay, Coigach.

It's a little hard to make out at this onscreen size, but these slabs are covered with ripples made on a beach or wadi one billion years ago. There were no plants then, nor animals of any kind, and Scotland was 30° south of the Equator, seperated from England by 1000 km of shallow ocean. Perhaps it's just the antiquarian packrat in me, but these days the backstory is an increasingly important part of the photograph. I've stopped photographing just shapes and patterns, and gone back to photographing things.

Also curious if this is inside Banff.

Quite dramatic, full of danger.

I don't think there was any camera shake, my scanner bed is not quite big enough so the print sags and the only spot that would be focused properly is the center of the image.

This carnival scene has all the lights switched on – but almost no people. Pretty spooky. Then it occurred to me that the exposure time might have been long enough to eliminate moving crowds (if they’re actually there); however, the appearance of the water & Ferris wheel suggest the exposure wasn’t that long. So I’m right back to “pretty spooky”! It’s a super image in many ways.

Nice shots!

Question about the first one. What produced the fog affect that is limited to just a few inches above the water's surface? Was this a long exposure and this is water surface movement?

rcjtapio
6-May-2011, 14:07
The first shot was taken at sunrise shooting east into the sun (over Lake Michigan)...had it been there. The morning was foggy & rain. I believe it was about a 6 minute exposure (on Tri-X at f/45) and I had to shield the lens with my raincoat. There is a reason why we call our group an "asylum." Thanks for your comment.

I shot this image last week, printed it on Monday night and plan to selenium tone it later today. I also took the same image on Fuji 160-S color negative film and plan to print it this evening.

It's interesting to note that although Ansel Adams was a daily visitor to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915 which, he said, "would be my school for that year," he never, as far as I am aware, took a photograph of what he termed "the glorious Palace of Fine Arts."

*****

I posted this image earlier this morning and after reading the posts in the Business section of the forum decided to start selling my images. Good images are hard to come by (If you get one good one a month you're doing good! - Ansel Adams). But maybe I can find that one good one and break even on this interest. If you're looking for a good print, then you'll also find the above in the forum's For Sale section.

Midwest Large Format Asulym shot in Evanston nice photo rcjtapio. Did you go on the may outing in Ohio?

Actually the MWLFA outings are always on the 3rd Saturday of the month which means the May outing is coming up in a couple weeks. We will be shooting along Lake Michigan in Chicago close to the Osaka Garden (near the Museum of Science & Industry) and some of the many bridges near Chinatown. More details can be found on the MWLFA website (www.midwestlargeformat.com). I see you check in there from time to time.

The outing in Ohio (just south of Cleveland) is organized by an active MWLFA friend (John) who does a great job of bringing LF shooters together for a great weekend of shooting, viewing prints and making friends. He organizes 3 or 4 outings a year. If you ever find the time to go, you will have a great time. I made one of the Ohio outings last year and enjoyed every minute. Because of being Mother's Day weekend, I could not make this one.

Hope to see you on a future outing.

I was biking with my wife 2 years ago on a early fall and i came across this fallen tree in a river near my home .I was biking on a mountain bike ,so there was no room for large format .All we had with us was a nikon coolpix 7900 pocket camera .The water was calm,no wind, the sun was low in the sky if i remember right and yellow and red leafs on the trees around caught my eyes .I asked her for her camera ,composed the picture the best i could and took the shot .There was no time to go back home and get the real stuff ,it was getting dark .When igot home and looked the picture in the computer i almost killed myself for not having the right equipment at that time .I love the felling and tonal range of the picture along with the reflection in the water .I went to the same place many times after that but the water is never like that ,neither the colors and even the trees around are getting bigger .I'm sad because it is not an 8x10 Tmax sheet of film shot through my Cooke XV ,but at the same time ,i'm happy to have taken the shot.At least i can make some 4x6 post card with it .4x6 ??? What is that ???????????

I was biking with my wife 2 years ago on a early fall and i came across this fallen tree in a river near my home .I was biking on a mountain bike ,so there was no room for large format .All we had with us was a nikon coolpix 7900 pocket camera .The water was calm,no wind, the sun was low in the sky if i remember right and yellow and red leafs on the trees around caught my eyes .I asked her for her camera ,composed the picture the best i could and took the shot .There was no time to go back home and get the real stuff ,it was getting dark .When i got home and looked the picture in the computer i almost killed myself for not having the right equipment at that time .I love the felling and tonal range of the picture along with the reflection in the water .I went to the same place many times after that but the water is never like that ,neither the colors and even the trees around are getting bigger .I'm sad because it is not an 8x10 Tmax sheet of film shot through my Cooke XV ,but at the same time ,i'm happy to have taken the shot.At least i can make some 4x6 post card with it .4x6 ??? What is that ???????????

Lots of great images in this thread!

This one is from last weekend near a place called Peavine Falls in Oak Mountain State Park. I don't do a lot of color 4x5, but I had an expired box of Portra 160VC laying around, so I decided it to use it to capture something that said "Fall". It's a two minute exposure at f32 with a Caltar 180mm lens. I used a polarizer only as a neutral density filter to lengthen the exposure.

My favorite shot of this entire thread so far (133 pages and counting...). Simply amazing. I would blow that up to 4 feet x 5 feet and hang it on my staircase wall.

Why thank you. This is in a structure behind a concrete pond at the top of a spillway. It's very near to where I grew up. I climbed up the spillway once about 25 years ago but never thought much about it until recently when I went back up to see if it had been found and modified by street artists. I didn't find much graffiti but I did find some unexpected optical effects. Here's one more:

I don't find scanning color neg to be problematic at all. Maybe getting it right directly out of the scanner is hard but I scan uncorrected and adjust afterwards. The current negative films are so linear across almost the entirety of their characteristic curves that this is usually very simple. In fact I have much greater difficulty with transparencies, the transition to deepest shadows in particular because at some point black shifts away from neutral.

This was taken last Saturday while out with the Midwest Large Format Asylum. It is sunrise over Lake Michigan from the south side of Chicago. The sun was rising so fast that I clipped part of the sun on 2 negatives as I made two exposures. The sun only peeked out for about 30 seconds as it mostly hid behind the clouds. The image is both negatives sandwiched to complete the circle of the sun. As the composition is mostly symmetrical I ended up liking the crazy double exposure of the trees so the image is not so boring.

This one is a composition at sunset on Kuaui where the lava flow meets the sea. I was certainly feeling the pressure of the elements. The wind was getting up, the sun was setting fast, it was starting to rain and the waves were crashing ever closer to the tripod.

Mrladewig and MumbleyJoe,

Thanks for the kind compliments. I wish I could say the image was more than the result of dumb luck. But I;m at the mercy of luck when it comes to long exposures and reciprocity. Still getting the hang of this game but having a blast. The Falls image was Velvia 50 for close to a minute. I've also tried some long exposures with Ektar 100 and darn if I can expose that stuff long enough in the early dawn /pre-dawn light -- always underexposed. Just bought some Astia to try as it is supposed have improved reciprocity and exposure latitude.

Cheers,

That's nice. This must be on the east side of the island.

You've captured swells, curling waves, water running off the rocks like a waterfall, churning ocean, a little of everything. Never know what you're going to get with wave photos, and you did well.

Very rough out there at times; I've only boated around that part rather than walked it.

David Aimone

Yes, that was on the southeast corner of the island at Christmas Cove. The wind was by biggest problem for the week, and that day/place was the biggest problem. I ended up having to clean two lenses that night with lens paper and what I hope was very good quality eyeglass cleaner! It's all I had there, and the lenses were salt-encrusted from the wind-blown spray mists.

The only thing I looked for on this one was to get the water flowing over the rock on the right, waterfall style. The rest was a bonus!

I suppose this one could go into "trees" or "water's edge." Image taken in the UP in a boggy area. I was lucky to get the shot as the area where I was standing and shooting was basically water and grasses beneath me. I must have stood there for a couple of minutes hoping that the camera was absolutely still. It's not often I take too many images with a blue sky in them, but the gold tamaracks certainly contrasted nicely with the sky and the lighting wasn't terrible. Jim

Over the last couple of years I’ve been working on a portfolio of photographs taken along and under the Glamorgan coastline of South Wales. The visits have been well spread out – just four in total. It’s a remarkable stretch of stratified rock which offers fantastic forms, contrasts and textures for b&w photography. Images from the portfolio could be posted in any one of a number of our threads, Landscape, Water’s Edge, Rocks, Folds, Faults and Fossils, and perhaps others – but not Trees! This one was taken last Friday on a very fruitful day – in spite of the bright sun! Along this stretch of coastline there are several sea caves up to about 100m in depth (horizontally). Some of my images are made deep inside, hence the “under” in my first sentence.

http://www.virtuallygrey.co.uk/files/9311/2471acrossthebristolchanneltoexmoorfromtheglamorgancoastnearllantwitmajor.jpg

Across the Bristol Channel to Exmoor

My Glamorgan Coast portfolio is linked here (http://www.virtuallygrey.co.uk/portfolio100661.html) where the first six images were all taken last Friday.

As an aside for Doctor Who and Torchwood followers – this stretch of coast often features in scenes from the TV programmes. The production base for Doctor Who and Torchwood is in nearby Cardiff. If anyone saw the first episode of the latest Torchwood “Miracle Day” – it features the lone cottage on the hillside in this photograph (http://www.virtuallygrey.co.uk/photo3203138.html) where Gwen is living, until her whereabouts is discovered and there’s a great helicopter fight around the cottage and over the beach! It’s further west along the South Wales Coast at the west end of the Gower peninsula.

Hi Boinzo.
how long are you processing your negs for? I use FP4 and Rodinal @ 1+50.
I rate my Film @ 80 ISO, and process for 7.5 min @ 20 deg.
I'm heading down to the Otways Vic.on Monday for a week, based at cape Otway. taking the Tachihara and my home built 4x5 Ultra Wide, hope to get some good shots, hope the weather is kind. You are doing well,
Cheers Brian.

Boinzo
29-Jul-2011, 00:45
Thanks Brian. I metered at 100 ISO and these were all 15 mins @ 20C ... I might try a bit less development next time although I think the 100 ISO might be leading me to underexposing a bit too.
Enjoy the Otways - would love to get there some time!
Practice will eventually get me there I hope.

29-Jul-2011, 00:47
Bonzo, I think, that major problem is in low detail in shadows. So, you need to do longer exposure, because development affectst only ligts. So, by pushed developement you will get only higher contrast, not the shadows. Zone system is your answer :)

briand
29-Jul-2011, 01:38
Boinzo..
I forgot to mention my processing is done in a Jobo tank with continuous agitation.
I think you are processing a bit to long. If you have a Grey Card meter from that, use that exposure, take two shots, then process one at 13min, and the second at 11min,
see if the negs are better.
Cheers Brian

Boinzo
29-Jul-2011, 01:41
Thanks Accordianist. I did try to use the zone system but was very concerned about blowing the highlights because there was such a big range of tones. The water was metering at about 12 and the shadows under the rocks down as far as 1. This left me very unsure on how best to proceed....

Accordionist
29-Jul-2011, 02:03
My recipe - with spotmeter measure the darkest area in the scene, where do you still want to have details. Now, move the measured value in Zone 2. (so, if you have measured e.g. 1/30 f22 its 1/4 f22) This is your exposure time. If there is to high contrast, you must short the developement. (do tryouts at home, to determine how much) And/Or you must use compensating developer like Pyro 510.

And it would be best, before all this to determine your own E.I.

Boinzo: developing longer will push the highlights up and have little effect on the shadows. The shadows are basically set by the exposure. The bible for understanding this is The Negative by Ansel Adams, if you haven't read it yet.

Nice compositions, btw.

What are your exposure times for these shots?

Thanks James. The light bulb has started to light!
I have Ansel's book and have started reading.
Exposure times were around 4secs @ F22. I can clearly see I should have pushed the original exposure and pulled the dev now. I guess I'm still shaking off the digital "don't blow the highlights" thing...

Now my third outing!

These are from a hike yesterday in Lamington National Park near Brisbane - Queensland, AU.

These are FP4+ in Rodinal 1:50. Wondering if I should have maybe pushed the development longer. I am still trying to get my head around it all. There was a bit of wind which didn't help and I think I got my plane of focus all wrong in the last one.

Any comments or suggestions on how I can do better gratefully appreciated!

I'd suggest a longer exposure to retain some detail in those large black areas in the background and then reduce development time to keep the highlights from blowing out. Of course we're looking on a monitor, maybe those areas actually have detail in the print.

Did you add exposure for reciprocity failure?

Did you add exposure for reciprocity failure?

Well that could be part of my issue. I knew I needed to add reciprocity but didn't have a table of values for fp4 with me. In the end I added only an additional half second or so to indicated exposure. I definitely need to put a table in my bag....

Brian - thanks for the input. It's true that in the original scans there is a touch of detail in the shadows but it isn't enough and the images are not how i had visualised them. There is much to learn....

It's fair to say i had it ar#e-about. I think you guys have helped get me back on track! Now I just need to get back into the forest!

I dunno... I had the same thoughts as the others, "needs more exposure" but then... I also actually sort of like them this way. There's something about the deep tones in the shadows and the higher contrast rendering that's very dramatic and different from your normal waterfall scene.

On the other hand, they still need more exposure. Even if you do expose more there's absolutely nothing preventing you from printing more fully exposed negatives with more contrast and darker shadows. Even if you wanted that type of rendering, it's nice to have the option post exposure.

Thanks Tom. It was so dark under that ledge to the left of the water fall that my spot meter said "0 ev". I could have changed film under there....

These are my first ever 4x5 trannies and I have to say - it was just a fantastic feeling when I first held them up to the light. :)

I kinda think the lack of details down there adds a mysterious tension.

Try printing it without the posts on the left. Nice image and light here.

Thanks Vinny, your right. I printed the full net here with no crop. When I print it again I will do it without as you suggest. Posts seem everywhere in my life.

David, when I move that image up to cut out the white sky, and move back about 3-4 feet from my monitor, that image really moves me. I love the white sky reflection and how it balances the sulfur "dome," for lack of a better word.
