Thank you. I used more foreground because I felt the ripples in the sand added more interest than the sky.

Ha, we seemed to be following one another--I got my undergraduate degree at LSUS and am currently fetched up in Knoxville. At any rate, I suppose it was a pretty scruffy scene when I was there, pre-casino/post oil-bust, but exotic enough for someone (literally) just off the farm.:)

It was pretty exotic for me coming from the UK too. So many things to bite or hurt you. We get to Knoxville a couple of times a year as it's only two hours away. Nice to visit and shop.

Ha, that's hilarious--though you'd have to go a ways to beat my Yankee wife, who I put through a classic "meet the parents" scenario on what was then a working cattle ranch up in Arkansas.:) (Ironically, every subsequent spin of the wheel here in academic Thunderdome has since kept us south of the Mason-Dixon.)

At any rate, let me know if you get the urge to explore the GSMNP--I've spent an unconscionable amount of time up there with a flyrod in my hand, so I might be able to point you in a direction.

Plenty of great inspiration for me here. My first post of a photo. Made with ERA 100 film, Fotoman 45PS with 90mm lens. I had carried my tripod down to the rocks, then discovered I'd left the camera mounting plate back at the accommodation. So this was shot hand-held, braced, at 1/15 and f/32.

Nice set and some beautiful country back in there--I've traipsed through the region quite a bit, but never got to explore, say, the Dolly Sods as much as I would like. (Also, a lot of history in that area as well, e.g. Great Meadows/Fort Necessity where George Washington basically kicked off the first "world war.":))

Sad thing is in WV a lot of what you refer to peaty water is actually abandoned mine runoff and is a big problem for the water in the entire state. I am BTW a GIGANTIC fan of the state of WV being only 30 mile from the boarder and having a second home for quite a while in Oakland Md and that home was less then a 1/2 a mile from the boarder of WV. But MANY streams in the area have the peaty color but again it's NOT vegetable matter causing the brownish red color but a abandoned coalmine leaching into the streams and waterways.

My favorite local area in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in Washington State. Photo made in 1971, Sinar Norma on my first trip with the new camera, before I started keeping notes of the photo details. The original photo is an Ektachrome E3 process, but I wanted to make a b&w print later, so I copied the 4x5 original on a Macbeth lightbox of correct color balance to get a Polaroid PN55 negative and enlarged it to a 16x20 print. It held up very well at that size.

Very close to me our 'new' coal mine expects to operate another 50 years and dump a lot of **** in the Big Muddy

Some are waking up. Residents ask Illinois EPA to not allow Pond Creek Mine to dump water into Big Muddy (https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?pli=1#inbox/FMfcgxwGCQbMsLwlPfgVGNRLPjMPVTlg)

It will continue, the Big Muddy feeds the Mississippi.

I once knew well the first woman coal miner in this area. A proud strong person 45 years ago...

Amazing Photo Austin. Can I ask a very newbie question? How do you meter for a shot like this? I usually do portraits, and I meter with a L358.
I point the dome towards the camera, and take a reading. That shows the light that hits the face of the subject.
For a landscape like this, what/how would I use this meter? Point towards the sky?
Point towards the camera? I see these photos, and ones that are, say, in a forest with trees as the subject, and wonder how I would
meter with my incident meter.
Thanks....

Thank you for the kind words. As far as your question, for large format stuff, I use an old Pentax spot meter, and employ a sort of sloppy Zone System. Generally, that means I'll meter the shadow area, or the darkest area where I want to retain some detail (here it was the landform at left, where it meets the water), and then I'll place that on Zone three, so basically dark but retaining some detail, and then I'll let the rest fall where it may. Alternatively, for a scene with bright highlights, say sunlit snow, I might meter the brightest area and place that on zone eight (so I'd add three stops to the meter's recommendation which wants everything to be zone five middle gray) and then let the rest fall wherever it does. Does that make sense? As I said, this a very sloppy way to use the zone system, but I'm simple-minded when it comes to technical stuff, and need all my mental facilities to try and recognize pictures in the first place.

I can't speak specifically to the L358, but I often use a medium format camera with center-weighted metering (a Fuji GF670), and in this case, I would take its general recommendation and then have given an extra stop or so, figuring that the brightish sky might have fooled it to underexpose, and also to retain the general feeling of lightness that I wanted.

I realize that this all sounds somewhat vague, but I'm afraid it's the best I can offer. Honestly, when I'm out photographing, I'm not super precise, technically speaking; it's more like I have a feeling that something needs more or less exposure. In general, I tend toward fuller exposures, as I can reign those in somewhat, whereas if I under-expose, it's a bigger problem.

If you don't have it already, I would highly recommend the Ansel Adams book "The Negative" which covers metering way better than I ever could. It was very helpful to me when I was starting out.

Best, Austin

This generally how I meter (with a Zone VI modified Pentax Digital Spot), but I tend to focus more on the finding the brightest spot rather than the shadow areas as most of my exposures are done with transparency film. When I start to shoot more B&W film I may need to adopt the shadow approach more. I have the L358, the Pentax spot, and I now use an app on my phone lately and sometimes I bring a small digital camera to check, and it seems they all give me slightly different to quite different meter readings, so now I find myself second guessing a lot (this is with my newly acquired Hasselblad 500 C/M). I have not processed any film yet, but shorty I'll send off the transparencies to see the results of my phone metering.

Sometimes it's a road, but it's in a very low area that's already pretty much wetlands to begin with so after a few days of heavy rains it looks like this for a while. The whole area is a former Gulf Oil storage facility so it's not exactly a public road and no longer maintained at all.

Since the Gillespie Dam was breached in 1993, a natural riparian preserve has slowly formed. A sanctuary where Pelicans, Egrets, Herons, and water fowl flourish. The jagged edge of the broken structure mirrors the slopes of the nearby Buckeye Hills in a blending of unique Arizona topographics.

Pyrocat 1:1:120 semi-stand

That's one of the stronger Pyrocat semi-stand dilutions I've seen: is it predicated on using that particular film, or did you have some printing issues you were planning on?

At any rate, good to see some photos from your outing dropping--looks like a good day to thrash around in the rhodie.:) I'll have to get y'all up to the GSMNP at some point so you can explore some bigger country (especially if you take your Wehman and Eric's got his 5x12 by that point.)

Thanks guys. CB, when I'm doing a full 12-sheet batch, my normal development seems to be too weak. I've done 1:1:200 for 6-sheet batches. So I gave this dilution a try with only slight "semi-stand" development - 20 minutes with agitation 3 times in the course of that time.

Negatives look gorgeous so I'll be doing this again. I was thinking the time/dilution might be too much, but the light was very flat so an N+ development was okay. It ended up being just right, maybe a tad bit +, but good I think for most negatives.

Excellent, I've been curious as to solution-strengths lately as I try to get dialed in using a Paterson Orbital with 5x7.:)

Corran
19-Feb-2020, 19:07
This is the only time I've really experienced that issue, so I've been playing around with different dilutions and development times to dial in something since I like doing large batches.

Speaking of semi-stand, I took the solution from that development round and added another 3 ml of each part A and B to "replenish" the developer a bit, and did another batch of semi-stand developing, this time Efke PL100 film developed for an hour.

Ha, Heraclitus definitely had it right in these parts--the only constant is change, especially on the higher gradient streams in the GSMNP.:) That is a photogenic stretch of water, though.

I usually have high SBRs and use what would be minus developments. I settled on 1.5:1:150 for EMA Pyrocat. I need up join you guys sometime. I’ve been in the flatlands so long, I don’t know if I remember how to take a picture of a hill.

It turned out well. I like the creamy white effect from the shutter speed in this shot.

I've done stand development both in 120 roll and sheet film. For me, it's a risk of uneven development. It's hit and miss on the same roll. I've tried different ways and suggestions. But I have observed one natural law. The better the picture, the higher the probability it will have uneven development. :)

The way I understand it is we agitate film in the first place to replenish exhausted developer along the so-called fluid boundary layer common to the surface of the film. And we agitate in a vigorous enough way to make sure we did that. So for development to happen without doing this means some natural convection occurs or something. I have no clue. But I do think such a process would be delicate and subject to not working "evenly" on large areas of film. When I think of roll film wrapped on my SS reels, I know the gap between wraps can be variable (toughness of the wrap) . Does something like that change the dynamics of it all. I dunno.

Corran
20-Feb-2020, 13:47
Thanks tuco. I've been happy with semi-stand, but I usually do more agitation than true "stand" development. Perhaps I get away with that, or perhaps my setup just happens to work fine.

Vaughn lovely print, I missed it earlier.

This was taken in the park near Oil City,LA. I'm not certain about the Texas side, though I'm sure there must be a park or a boat ramp. You could always try the Louisiana side.

You could always try the Louisiana side.

If you keep rolling another hour or so to Doyline, Lake Bistineau is another nice cypress-y body of water, again with a state park and cabins. Unlike Caddo Lake, however, it does experience seasonal draw-downs as they try to fight the spread of salvinia, so it might be worth calling ahead for conditions.

(FWIW, speaking of cypress, I always wanted to explore the Edwards Plateau a bit more, especially that turquoise water swirling around the cypress trees there on the Guadalupe and San Saba.:))

That’s true — if I had to guess, maybe around 100? I mean I know at least 4 people that have taken a similar picture with their 8x10, so throughout time probably still many dozens... Gosh I assume back in the day, when LF cameras were *the* only cameras around or very common, people still visited Zion.....

This week I found a box of negatives I had misplaced since moving a few years ago. These included a bunch of 4x5 and 120 negatives I had selected to print back at my old house / darkroom, so in other words my better images. So I've been having a ball printing some of these to larger sizes I couldn't do back then.

One of these negatives was from November 2014, taken along the Withlacoochee River in south GA. The water was low, with lots of tannin, and the leaves moved along with the flow beautifully. I am pretty sure I used my Chamonix 45n1, Nikkor 90mm, and an R25 filter, on TMX, likely developed in Rodinal. Here's the image:

http://www.esearing.com/Bryan/AV/photosharing/withlacoochee7-ss.jpg

And here it is, printed to 19 x 23 inches, in the wash:

Corran
27-Mar-2020, 20:11
Thank you both. The conditions were just right for that - flowing enough to show motion but not so many leaves to overwhelm the tannin water. These southern rivers don't flow like the mountain streams - they are slow and steady.

This along with 8 or 9 other images were featured in a small show with the local Riverkeeper association back in 2015. There was a large county park that had many miles of trails along this river that I photographed for years - sometimes flooding, sometimes in drought.

Corran
28-Mar-2020, 20:55
Speaking of flowing water, here's another old negative printed recently, this time along an offshoot of the Alapaha River near Jennings, Florida. Taken with exactly the same gear as the previous image - Chamonix 45n1, Nikkor 90mm + R25 filter, TMX, but developed in FX-39. Here is the 19x23 print as matted to 24x30 and photographed with my D800e in the "studio" area of my basement:

http://www.esearing.com/Bryan/AV/photosharing/DSC_5063ss.jpg

My good friend and I canoed to this remote area of north Florida a number of times. But the first time I went I shot 2-3 really stupendous negatives. I need to visit Florida again and go back with my Noblex, which I didn't have back then. This shot was about 30 seconds long if I remember.

Hi jtomasella, That picture was made on the part of Black Run on the Kings Grant side, towards the south end.

These days, the "local authorities" have decided that being out alone in the woods is bad for our, or somebody else's,
health, so I will not be photographing there for a while (or anywhere, except maybe in my back yard).

Are you local? PM me if you wish to discuss.

A very very clever image which imo you have to study more than once (to obtain the full benefit etc)

regards

Andrew

Thank you Andrew, jtomasella, and others who took the time to comment on my photograph.

Not quite the edge as I was actually standing in the water. I'd like to thank my LL Bean boots for making this shot possible.

I like both of your Staten Island pictures very much. The first (B/W) one, that sky really makes it. You must have used
an ND filter or such to get the long exposure. Nicely done.

I've driven by (and over) "The Meadowlands" often enough to think that there could be some good photographs to be made there,
but have never done so.

Pat, you picked a good one; thanks. This has always had a special place in my life as a photographer --- it was my first published photograph, appearing in the 25th Anniversary edition of US Camera, 1961. It was also my first sale of an 8x10 contact print: $15, signed, and delivered! I'm enjoying your recent (and past) work.

Now (after a re-edit...) one of my favourite film photos I've ever taken.

This was one of my sheets of Velvia which I managed to process incorrectly (incorrect mix of colour dev chemistry iirc, producing some funky and unhelpful colour shifts). Reprocessed now it does what I wanted. It also makes me want to shoot more colour film on large format - something I've not actually done since I returned from a Scotland trip to the Isle of Harris in September 2018, and then moved up to 10x8 B&W with the Chamonix a few months later. I'm now dying to try some Provia and Velvia on the Chamonix - I still have the TK, but the viewing and shooting experience on 8x10 is (if more nuts) just enhanced even more. The scenes on the ground glass are fantastic. I can now also develop 8x10 film at home of course so that's not an issue.

I think this is from a trip where I wild-camped on location. The advantage of doing this was that I could stay on location across the whole day until the sun was low, instead of having to pack up for the 4hr drive home again, and watch the light change around the cove, and discover a range of different scenes and subjects across the different tide levels.

Thanks:
Yes, I mixed the colour dev wrongly I think and came up with a slide that had a massive cyan cast - bit like an inverted sheet of colour neg. A few layers in post processing sorted it out - but only after I came back to it after a number of months to revisit it.

About two months ago I had a chance to road trip through the mountains here in Colorado for a day. I took my Gibellini Proxima, Schneider Tele-Arton 360 f/5.5, Schneider (Caltar II) 210 f/5.6, Astragon 90mm f/6.8, and Komura 75mm f//6.3. Fun fact about this lens, I picked it up recently unused NoS. It had been in a camera store's back room (along with a boatload of other LF and MF NoS gear of the same era) unsold and forgotten about for decades. This was the second photo taken with that lens (the first doesn't meet the requirements of the thread.) Just a fun thing. http://www.esearing.com/Bryan/AV/photosharing/radiation-5387ss.jpg

This was a place I've been itching to go back to. The road was damaged the first time, making the trip a grueling 7 mile hike in the height of summer last year. But they recently repaired the road and so it was just a pleasant mile or so down to a pair of waterfalls in a local WMA. I've unofficially renamed them to "Radiation Falls," hence my title, as this scene was found in-between the upper and lower falls. The name comes from the fact that this WMA used to be a classified nuclear testing facility. They irradiated the surrounding area to see what this would do to local flora and fauna. Now it's a rather poorly-marked WMA mostly used for camping and hunting. The bright sun illuminating the leaves and open water area, gradually turning into dappled light on the cascades, evokes a bit of the history of the place to me.

https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?157390-New-Intrepid-quot-Black-quot-Edition-4x5-Camera-No-Plywood!-Also

The tl;dr is that I'm seriously impressed. It's not the most amazing camera in terms of getting things lined up nicely and precisely but it's also almost 1/3 the weight of my Linhof Master Technika so...

One thing about creek detritus...wait long enough and it'll kindly move! I didn't like how this rotted branch was positioned last time I was out at Amicalola Falls but it was much more photogenic this go-round. Diagonals and such. A fair bit of tilt - wanted to test that out in practice with the new camera too.

Haven't developed the black and white, but did some color this evening since the light was nice - diffuse but directional, illuminating the scene well but not casting shadows.

Yes to both.

I have never split my 5x7. I have thought about it, but I only contact print and that is a bit on the small size. I split my 8x10 in half, but also my 11x14 -- image area measures 5"x13.5", which is darn close to the split 5x7.

Komura 75mm, no movements (of course, with this lens), Ektachrome 100, 1/8th at f/22. Random alpine lake south of Leadville.

Same film, Schneider 210, 1/60th at f/8, Granite Colorado from the shore of the river that runs past it.

I'll post a few more in a separate post.

Jim, this is the highest compliment, thank you. I grew up around a few photographers who inspired me to do just that. You know the story. It is why I post the occasional image on this forum. Most go unnoticed, at least without comment. However, my intent in doing so has always been to inspire or motivate. Fortunately it works both ways; I have, at times, been inspired by work posted here.

Thanks, Vaughn. That's a good observation. My initial prints of this in the 70's had double the horizon seen here. Over the years I have reduced it; a slight bit more reduction also works. I'll keep the thought.

Thank you, Dugan. The stones were wet from a heavy mist, evident at the horizon. They had a beautiful glow to them in that light. It made the 3,500 mile drive from Berkeley worthwhile!

Quartzite Falls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Toyo 45AII, Schneider Symmar 135mm, Delta 100, D76 1:1.

My first attempt at shooting a waterfall with large format, I think the water is a bit overexposed. I learned a few things with this shot. I need to get a 90mm lens, 135mm just isn't wide enough for waterfalls, something I plan on shooting much more of. I had to crop this a bit to straighten it out and it's still not perfectly straight. When composing, I had a hard time seeing the trees at the top to level off of since they were in shadow. I need to get a 3 axis hot shoe level to level the camera. I also learned that my 135mm lens sticks at longer shutter speeds. This was supposed to be a 1 sec exposure, but 1 sec on the lens sounded more like 2 seconds. 1/2 sec sounded close to a second, but it might be a bit long. I also had to clean up quite a few scratches in PS. I had difficulty loading this holder and figured the film was getting scratched.

With all the dark rocks your exposure was probably right, but perhaps just needed a little underdevelopment to hold back the water. As for the 90mm - a lot of times I can't get close enough to waterfalls to use the 90mm because of the spray. Don't dismiss your 135 yet. Good composition!

14-Oct-2020, 19:34
Thanks John. Maybe you're right about 90mm being too wide, I guess it depends on how close you want to get to the falls. I'm used to using my 16-35 on a full frame. I metered off the part of the water in the middle that looks a little bright and added 3 stops. I had 5 stops of range so I figured it was about right.

Great 1st LF image!!

If I don't trust the 1 or 1/2 second speeds on a shutter, I close down another stop and use B. "Exercing"' the shutter might help with those speeds, maybe not.

In dark situations, to see the image on your GG easier, place your eye on the line the light is traveling along -- in better words, if you want to see into a corner of the GG easier, look at the corner with your eye in-line with the center of the lens opening...where the light is coming from.

135mm is fine for waterfalls -- just learn to see with it and where one needs to be to set the camera up. There is no regular lens that is not great for waterfalls, it will be the eye and experience of the photographer that will determine if it a focal length works' best 'or not.

Have fun!

Nicely done. I rarely use my 90 for waterfalls, 135 or 65 for me if up close. Find a shutter tester and be sure, 1/2 vs 2 seconds makes a huge difference with white water.
