Linhof Lensboard Requirement for 135mm Planar 3.5

Why is a 135mm Planar 3.5 typically fitted on a recessed board? Wouldn't a flat board be as suitable for this focal length and much less expensive (Linhof boar ds)? Thanks

So it can stay on the camera when it is closed. Same for a 150mm.

For a TK you would use a flat board as you can on a Technika if you do not want to carry the lens in a closed camera.
