Just got this little guy it's f 4.5 Dallmeyer 8 x 10

I was wonder if this is a wide angle, it is only 2 1/2" tall and the lens is 2 3/4" wide. The front glass is cemented while the rear element are not.

Any thoughts. Thanks John22683

Oh, wishful thinking! It is, if the VM's chronology is correct, pre-1865. If your description of the glasses is correct, it is a Petzval that covers 45 degrees.

I don't think the lens is pre-1865. It covers 8x10 and says so in the engraving on the lens, and it has an iris aperture.

and the modern f/stop scale 8 11 16 22 32 45 64, I guess newer than 1910.

Honestly, I think its a fake. First, Dallmeyer looks like Dollmeyer. And the real Dallmeyer didnt display "8x10" like that, it was always written as "10x8"

Hi John. Sorry to disappoint you but......I don't have a clue. Very interesting lens. The Dallmeyer script is different than on my lenses, but interestingly, the lever is the same as some of my later Dallmeyers. Mine all say J G C Dallmeyer. Is it one of the Lexim2K lenses out of India? Does it actually cover 8X10? I'll be interested to see what you find out.

It looks like a period Dallmeyer fake to me. No serial number right? That's a big tipoff, Dallmeyer always had a number, and I believe initials, and "London." Dallmeyer had a lot of trouble with counterfeit manufacturers.

does the aperture say 4.5 or 8 on the dial? that is what was stumping me. are the elements cemented? did you take it apart and check for sure.

keep us posted.

i have a RR that is about that size(maybe a tad bigger) that covers 12x10. but the rear element is bigger than the front.

I took it apart, the front is defiantly cemented, slight separation on the edge, on the dial it said's 4 l 5 , then 6.3 and so after that, the rear elements are not cemented together, I don't know if this is how you check it, but it came into focus on the 8 x 10 ground glass, about 14 inches, I don't have any 8 x 10 film

I don't see how it can be a "wide-angle" for 8x10 and "come into focus at 14 inches", as that would indicate a 350mm lens which is slightly long (not wide-angle) for 8x10. A wide-angle lens would "come into focus" at 10 inches or less.
