View Full Version : Winter landscape

The temperature here in Anchorage was supposed to reach 20 F today. It never made it. I think that the high was closer to 10F. It's now just above 0F. From what I've seen on the news, winter in the rest of the US is colder than was expected.

To commemorate this unanticipated change in temperature, how about a new landscape thread with the theme of winter?

Here are three to start it.
1. Frozen Portage Lake in late afternoon, Chugach National Forest, AK
2. Tidal ice plates near Homer, AK
3. Ice pans in tidal area along Cook Inlet, AK

Nice shots Bruce ! It was near 55 degrees here in Indy yesterday.. All the 12" of snow melted.
I was able to get some shots when It was fresh..I was hoping someone would start a winter landscape thread.. I'll post em later

We are having a much colder winter than we have had here for many years in the UK, even southern UK has not escaped sub zero temperatures and heavy snow.

This picture here on my homepage was taken a few weeks ago before all the snowfall and is a shot of hoar frost in a local forest in Hertfordshire, it is only about the 3rd hoar frost I have ever seen and this time I was ready.

It was made from 3 4x5 transparencies scanned on an Imacon X5 and stiched together in CS3. I used back shift on my Arca to take the 3 shots.

Julian - A very strong sense of place and very forbidding.

Michael - Frozen waterfalls in B&W give a much greater sense of cold than doing it in color in warm light. All three of my photos were made some years ago during a sustained period of -15F to -20F. But they don't convey the sense of cold that I get from your B&W waterfall.

These images were taken on Skye in Nov of last year. The first image is looking to the back of the Black Cullins from Sligachan(pronounced "sligahan") close the the bridge that appears in lots of brochures, travel mags and books.

The second is of Bla Bheinn( pronounced "blaven") taken close to the road to Elgol, a very well known and popular spot with photographers. Pretty much all of the UKs top landscape photographers have an "Elgol" in their collection!

Great 4 days on Skye with good frosts and some very inclement weather.

These soldiers are from one combat group. They were bused out to the airport over to Afghanistan after I took these shots(6hrs later).

Should call the base confirm their conditions...

Great images everyone...

While refreshing my snowshoeing skills with my young son Alex in January of this year, we came across this scene upon our return to Emerald Lake Lodge, where the weather was just a tad cold measuring a wee bit past minus thirty degrees Celsius, and where the afternoon sun was setting quickly behind the mountains. We were desperately seeking some warm comfort within the lodge after our round trip trek across the frozen lake, but I could not resist capturing this image, and where Alex, the frosty soul that he was, tolerated his father's momentary request... :)

A small otter happened to be splashing about in the open water while we were there, forcing Alex and me to patiently wait for the water to become still again, adding to our very cold moments at the scene.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your comments...

I am trying to collect a few images while I have the opportunity, during these quiet moments in the oil and gas sector, so I am back for a while until my next contract starts, where I will try to post a few images to let you know that I am still alive.

That said, while I was out and about that day with my son Alex, I forgot how deep the snow can be when you have a heavy backpack, where my snowshoes required a greater lift to clear the trampled snow, and my upper thighs quickly reminded me how dissatisfied they were after the first one hundred metres during that long hike with my son in the cold weather. As expected, Alex's continuous humour allowed him to chatter behind me as I trudged through the snow across the frozen lake, politely reminding me every few seconds that I was getting older by the minute, as he pranced around gracefully like a young colt should in the snow, and where I watched in absolute amazement how Alex walked so effortlessly on top of the snow, carrying my film holders in his backpack. I immediately decided at that moment to enrich Alex with some fatherly advice, so I gave Alex my tripod. :)

He took my transit tripod without saying a word and continued to prance, and chatter behind me, although a touch slower...

Moments like that become good memories in the future.

Again, thank you.

Lots of really nice images in this thread. We live in a flat part of the UK that doesn't get snow very often - often in winter it can be quite grey and dull. The other side of our village there's a small park that is in the flood plane, at this time of year its muddy and isn't really very pretty. But my dog and I enjoy walking there - its an escape from my job - so I felt it deserved a couple of my last sheets of type 55...

Great image!

I really like a lot of B+W work originating from color reversal film, and I do it myself (I also like being able to adjust the rendering slightly from the color channels). Perhaps it's the contrast from the lower DR, idk. Do others consider this a poor technique or form (in general, obviously done well above)?

h2oman
24-Feb-2009, 13:40
Hey Matt,

I'm currently converting shots from color to B&W because I don't know how to develop B&W film, although I am close to giving it a shot. The guy whose web page is at the following link also does B&W by converting from color, primarily using Astia transparency film. There was an article about him, in which he detailed his methods, in an issue of Outdoor Photographer magazine some time back. (I tried to find a link for the article, but couldn't.) His claim was that he liked it because he can apply various filters to the shot in post-processing to try out various looks, rather than committing to a filter in the field.

The area surrounding Emerald Lake is rather spectacular at any time of the year, but during the winter the drive into this area can be very treacherous after, and during a heavy snowfall. Winter adds a wondrous touch to this beautiful area.

About your snow in July...

That happens periodically when a strong turbulent cold front pleasantly decides to muscle its way into our neighbourhood, and leave its mark during a pleasant summer. I'm pretty sure that it was summer 1998. The year summer didn't happen. Everyone was complaining about cold and rain and snow. We got snowed on 3 times in mid-July. never enough to be dangerous. Just enough to be pretty. Coming from the Gulf coast, I always look forward to mountain weather.

Great link, Gregg, thanks a million! I'm interested to hear that others, including you, are working with a color->B+W process. Thanks for the kind words, but I have a LOOOOOONG way to go, that I know. :)

Fantastic images by Dan Montgomery - excellent. I will look for the article you mentioned.

Cheers!

Dear Norman,

Nicely done...

I am curious to know where that lake happens to be, and how it acquired that name. I have visions of bones, shackles, and leg irons at the bottom of the lake. :)

Norman,

The work on your website is incredible, truly beautiful. I have bookmarked it as it will take quite some time to view it all.

Excellent images everyone... :)

Today, winter struck back with a blistery frigid day, so I decided to find another image.

An old Sea Captain's home take in Connecticut in the early 80's. While not strictly a landscape, it was definitely a winter morning.

OK, if old ones are allowed... from 1984. Two Trees in Snow, Pompton Lakes, NJ
4x5 TriX, Omega 45D with cheap Schneider Xenar 150

I also had been in a car accident the night before because of this beautiful snow. Black ice under the snow on the way home from work and I crashed my Jeep into a telephone pole. I was lucky... I avoided the three solid oak trees just to the side of the pole. Took the rear view mirror off the windshield with my head and broke the dashboard with my shoulder. I took this photo against the judgment of my mother... I'm glad I did!
