I thought that I knew a lot of the old stuff -- but this shutter is a new (OLD) one on me. Reference ebay item 170291000971. Anyone see this unit before?

It is a flap shutter, a Conley "Silent" or similar. At the lower left, the colored item is the failed rubber bulb which lpushed on the rod at its right side. (Other flap shutters have a little piston instead.)That pushed on the cranked rod attached to one of the metal flaps, forcing it open. A linking rod caused the other flap to open at the same time. The "Silent" part resulted from the two wings which acted as stops for the flaps. As the flaps entered they compressed some air so that the end of the opening was slowed and made quiet. These wings were light sheet metal like the rest of the shutter. They bend so easily that shipping these is a definite hazard.

Obviously, these shutters were useful on large studio cameras, but out of place on anything else. The maker claimed speeds of up to 1/4 second.
