I'm considering purchasing a Wollensak 159 mm (6 1/4-inch) f12.5 which has no shutter and I'm wondering what size/manufacturer shutter it takes. Seller tells me that it is close to a #3 Ilex shutter but does not fit.

Thanks in advance!

The 159mm f12.5 was in production for several decades. During that time, it came factory mounted in many different shutters. Which shutter the lens in question fits, if any, depends on when it was made. I have seen older, uncoated samples in Regno and Betax shutters and later, coated samples in Alphax and Rapax shutters.

The lens will probably only be a direct fit to a Wollensak shutter. If you can measure the cell threads I can look up on a brochure I have to see what Wollensak shutter it would fit.

My 159er sits now in an Alphax #3. It seems the majority of the 159ers (both f9.5 and 12.5 versions) came in a Betax #3. Kerry is of course right with his comments.

I have several #3 Alphax and Betax shutters and they're all the same size. Joe's lens pictured above by the way is a longer focal length (200mm) and sits in an Alphax #4.

Thanks to all for the replies - I'm watching a few on fleabay and will get back to this post if I buy one without a shutter. I think I have a betax and an alphax around here somewhere...

You will probably need a Alphax #3 (or Betax #3) or maybe a Rapax #3 shutter.

Here are the cell measurements from a Wollensak shutter brochure I recently picked up:

Shutter : front cell diameter : rear cell diameter

Alphax #3 : 1 51/64" : 1 51/64"
Betax #3 : 1 51/64" : 1 51/64"
Rapax #3 : 1 35/64" : 1 37/64"
