happy new year everyone.

lets see some new year portraits! these are from this morning.

the 3/4 photos is a 5X7 ON BLACK ALUMINUM. 10 inch whole plate RR shot wide open. Moe sitting very still in 10 degree F temps for ten seconds....maybe she is frozen.....

the head shot is the same lens on 8x10. i had some issues pouring the developer on....i tried whipping it but that did not help! just posted it for fun.

The only portraits I have shot so far in Jan. 2009 was a wedding today that I had one day's notice to do (my niece). I'll take the film to be developed tomorrow. I'm exhausted.

Some practicing, I have gotten in to 8x10 and heres two of them.

The outdoor one is 4x5. All of them has some serious flaws still.. but i'm working on it. 8x10 are scanned from contact prints, and the last one was printed on matte paper.. so it's a bit darker than intended (eyes).

Well enough with the excuses...

This is just a lovely shot.
I for one, really like the relaxed face (or part of face that we can see) and think that it works very well here with the blindfold and the unseen, yet imagined bound hands.

Been a very busy autumn and a crazy December with the run up to xmas in my little studio, so not much time for posting on forums, or indulging in large format.... but finally in dark and quiet January have I got time to post a shot here: This was taken back in august last year, but has been sitting in the film holder until yesterday when I finally had time to get away from the digital work and get into the darkroom.

T.max 100 in Rodinal 1+50 for 7 and a half minutes at 20 degrees C in a rotary tank

Taken with my Crown Graphic with the 203mm kodak f7.7, wide open, if I remember correctly...

I did indeed :)

Glad you liked it :) thanks!

I really enjoy the look I get from that good ol' ektar, it is really sharp wide open with creamy , creamy bokeh that rivals canons best L glass imo... not bad from a lens made in 1956? my Crown is a 57 model :)

I was wondering what the heck that was! Weird. Nathan67 - that shot is like, perfect! Does the woman in the picture like it I wonder? There seems to be a disconnect between what photographers like and what regular people like in my experience. We see beautiful tones, detail and light but they see skin "imperfections". I don't know if this is a common thing or not, though.

Hi, Glad you liked it :) and I know exactly what you mean, I love this shot, the whimsical look, almost sad, those big eyes, the almost elfish features.

This woman came in to my studio to have her child photographed, but I just loved her look and asked her if she would sit for me one day, she said yes :)
She didnt dislike any shots, but she seemed to prefer the softer digital files that had the "glam" treatment.... but I just love this simple one light no re-touch shot on 4x5 film, photograph.

Dany,

If I may offer a suggestion, you have a great model to do some amazing work with, the first picture I saw of her she was leaning towards the camera over a chair, amazing eyes! The tones of the images are perfect.

This picture should see a revisit, she is blind folded and tied, and yet her facial expression appears as though she is bored by it all. Have you tried to extract a facial expression that leans more towards either apprehensive and anxious, or blissful and eager?

This could be a single image from a series, out of context the expression works perfectly within the series, but it would interesting to see what new life the image could take on with a dramatic change in expression.

best regards,
Allen

Many thanks for your comment :)

Here is a, fresh out the polaroid 545i back, portrait.
Taken today, a girl from Burundi that I met at a wedding before xmas, I asked her to come to my studio and sit for me, just loved her look. She said yes, and came today so here is a pola from the shoot.
Shen Hao TZ45IIB with caltar 210mm f5,6 IIN at 1/250 f11, two lamps, one gridded beauty dish camera left, and one gridded magnum reflector pointed at the background, one gold reflector camera right for a bit of fill in the shadows...

Nathan67 delivers the goods once again. Damn, she's fine! I like her smile on the color one, but the image itself makes me wince. Not your fault of course, but rather Polaroid's. I fixed it though, so I feel better now. :D

Those are wonderful and the color Polaroid has an almost pleasant look to it. But it also makes you realize that by loosing Polaroid, we aren't loosing much.

nathanm
15-Jan-2009, 15:42
Yes, we aren't losing much. But with a cute girl and good light you can cut Polaroid some slack. That portrait is certainly better than anything I've shot on my numerous foolishly-purchased boxes of Polaroid film!

16-Jan-2009, 04:55
Thanks guys for all the comments... I have to say that I am going to miss polaroid... especially T55....
Remember also that that one shot in colour was well expired and tungsten balanced film... so no surprises that the colour was off.... but I wanted those colours.. call me weird, but I like tungsten film with flash.... :)
Any way I am off to my native UK for a much needed 10 days holiday.. I will be sneaking one of my 5x4 cameras with me though (the crown) so maybe I can persuade some interesting people in the UK to let me take there pic... watch this space on the feb portraits thread :)

Thank you for your kind words. Some of the observations (from a site that rejected the photo) were:

"Your picture is edited too extensively or looks too unnatural," "it's a good photo, but it doesn't stand out that much", and "it's too classical for me". I know it's self serving to post it elsewhere and indulge other opinions, but I really thought the criticisms were... well... silly. It is by no means my best work, and does have it's flaws. Being "too classical" is not one of them, however.

I wonder if stylistically, i.e. NOT digitally captured, it seems out of place to some eyes. Perhaps they are not used to seeing images made with MF film? The only edits were a crop and some spotting; I didn't even make tonal adjustments.

Sorry Guys, but I cannot see where digital manipulation fits in with this picture -- educate me. :)

I'd better explain: it wasn't criticized on this forum. It was actually rejected for submission to another forum, for the reasons I quoted above. My bad.

I used a life-sized puppy for composition and focusing, and switched them just for the shot. Unfortunately I didn't expect Matěj to stretch so much :)

Really great photography that also carries a very strong message. Your tonality is really fantastic, even more so with the following (United...) one.

I do not, and never have, owned a 360mm, this image feels like it suffers slight WA distortion. Can the elder 8x10 shooters shed some light?

Yes, it does Allen. This is the equivalent to a 50mm on 35mm format. This kind of photo would be preferable with a 500 or 600mm but, I don't have one.

Nana, thank you, I did not think the 360 would give that, but as I have never used one, it was interesting to see you example.

The work is beautiful!

Since I am almost as old as Christopher Broadbent and Leonardo D. I can post an old photograph of a beautiful girl with her Leica. Both the girl and the Leica are still stunning. She is one of Europe's leading experts on photography and when this photo was made she was returning from an internship at the George Eastman House in the
winter of 1978.
