Simple question for anybody who knows: are there any restrictions on driving from Twentynine Palms to Amboy? The road connecting the two passes right by (and perhaps even through) a marine base, and I'm wondering if one can freely travel north on that road to go to Mojave National Preserve. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

Amboy Road is a public road. No problem... it goes around the base.

If you are planning this trip during the next couple of months, be prepared for very cold weather, including the possibility of snow. The Upper Desert can be brutal in the winter if you are not prepared for it.

I drove that route years ago with no problem, but I was going from Amboy to Twentynine Palms. It might be a problem going the other way...

That's why I saw all those green jeeps!

For a good time: When you see a place called "the Palms," (on Amboy) stop, pull into the parking lot, go in, and have a few drinks.

If you got a little extra money, the town may still be up for sale as it was in the 90´s
Enjoy.

Jarheads love something besides their guns? Hmmm. This is interesting.

An old Marine chant: "This is my rifle; This is my gun. One is for killing; The other is for fun."

Many jarheads love both their rifles and guns. ;)

I stopped in Amboy a couple of years ago - when Saddam Hussain was executed - and photographed the exterior of the gas station and Diner and the adjoinng motel. The motel is closed but the diner is open. Stop in for a cup of Java, get brought up to date on Amboy, and purchase an Amboy t-shirt. I did!

The Amboy gas station/diner was featured in the '90's movie Kalifornia and was a hangout for Hollywood people. The manager told me about the time Harrison Ford was in the diner taking counter orders from the tourists who didn't even know it was him behind the counter that was taking their order.

Rumor is that the gigantic TV tower outside the diner was built by Johnny Carson. The story goes that Carson had the antenna tower built when he heard that Amboy couldn't get his show on TV.

Amboy was purchased a short time before my arrival by a restaurant owner - El polo Loco or something sounding like that. It makes for a great break stop - the only one around there. So do stop in!
