Allright I'm going out on a little of a limb here…but some of you got to have some train pix. It's more so for my curiosity to see what large format can do for a locomotive or boxcar. Moving trains tend to be a big challenge with 4x5 because of the speed vs. depth of field issues. However a still subject is usually a money in the bag with the big camera. :)

I'll start. Here's Union Pacific 849 sunning itself at the enginehouse in Portola, California in June of 2002. Tachihara 4x5 Field, Fujichrome Velvia.

Sure they do. Without a good drawbridge, railroads would be limited to transport with barges. Nice shot!

I chased CPR 2816 up the Fraser Canyon in BC once a few years back and attempted to take a few shots with my 4x5. This is one of the few that's close to being good (ie. no motion blur) In my opinion, shooting moving trains are great for a dslr, but not so good for a view camera!

That's almost exactly what I was trying to do a couple of weeks ago. As winner of the November contest on a local forum, I named railroads for the December contest. I was just starting to get set up when I was told to get away from the tracks by a railworker. I didn't argue. I had to settle for this as my entry:

LOL, are you showing your real age? That spot is called Cape Horn and is on the Southern Pacific "Overland Route." Union Pacific had a nasty derailment there last year, so it's a good idea to be aware of your surroundings.

No I am not that old! I was just a wee lad assisting Mr Watkins. He let me unload his camera from the train and haul his wash water. He first had both engines in the shot, but I told him that the big manzanita bush was too centered and would throw off the composition. Unfortunately the engineer would not back the train up for him.;)

Here is an oldie! In 1976 I was staff photographer for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. 1976 was the Bicentennial of our country & lots of railroads painted a locomotive for the occasion. This photo was done in secret at the Belt RR yard in south side of Chicago. (It had to be done in secret so the railfans would not know. If they knew, there would have been thousands of people there making it hard to move the locomotives around.) As far as I know, I was the only RR photographer there who brought a large format camera (a Speed Graphic).

The ICG locomotive is the one painted like an eagle. Sadly, on the very first run using this locomotive, it hit a truck in Mississippi killing the engineer.

As an employee of the railroad, everything I shot that day was the property of the ICG Railroad, which is now part of the Canadian National. They would have all the negatives.

This shot is a scan of a print I have & is the only souvenir I have from that day.

Although they are not LF photos, if you are a serious train aficionado this site has some interesting photos: http://jlmrrphotos.com/

John is a local photographer in Pagosa who has been photographing railroads for several decades. He used to use Hasselblads, but has moved over to digital (I apologize that it is not LF). However he presents an assembly of railroad photos from many different lines and geographical locations. Often times he presents a little history of the rolling stock that he has photographed.

In moving to digital, John makes large digital prints (something around 30" by X feet). These he sells when he travels around the country to various railroad clubs and meets. He claims that he has an easy time selling his prints!!!

So although it is not LF, I hope that you find this of interest.

the 93

This was a photographers special on the Nevada Northern RR January 2, 2000

It was bitter cold. The better for steam! We were all piled in the caboose with a good fire in the stove and a pot of stew. When we got to a spot we wanted to photograph everyone would pile out and set up while the engineer backed up about 1/4 to 1/2 mile. He would then put the throttle 'in the corner' and make just as much steam as possible while charging our direction.

Part of the fun for me at least was the collection of misfits this event drew. Railroad photographers (foamers) are a breed unto themselves. They all knew each other. I was odd man out with a Cambo 5X7. The camera of choice was a Nikon F2 loaded with Kodachrome 64. And God help you if it was a clean Nikon, oh NO, these cameras must look like you pounded every nail in the house with them. One extra colorful guy had a Speed Graphic with a Lanthar that he had been using since David Plowden was a teenager. This guy proceeded to smoke a stogie all day long and a tripod was a matter of derision. He had a Graphmatic and it was nothing for him to get 4 good shots off. Later that evening while the 93 was resting under steam at the shops he set up a night shot for us. F8 he barked, then he proceeded to light the whole thing up with flash bulbs for us. I got the shot on 35mm and it's a keeper.

Rick

Never been to the EBT before but the concept of a road that is intact historically is far more interesting to me than the various junk collections that museums put together. That is what I love about the Nevada Northern. It is perhaps the best kept historical railroad in the USA and it's remote enough that it isn't getting 'loved to death'.

5x7 action shots!!? whoaaa
but you infer you cheated and used a tripod
very cool
As for EBT, I visited there in the 70s. The car shop looked as if the workers simply put their tools down [ ca 1957 IIRC] and went home for the day- with one exception- the Scotch[?] boiler for the shops had deteriorated rapidly, so in order to use the massive machine tools a large electric motor was bolted to a [heavy] planer or such and belted up to the drivelines etc to be able to use the other machines- all driven by "flapping leather belts", pulleys, etc. Holy Goodness that was a long time ago- wonder if it still works?

Hello Ed,

I visit the EBT each year to photograph the trains, equipment and yard facilities. All of the equipment and tools remain in the machine shops, as you mentioned after the crews left. They give shop tours, so you can see the belt driven heavy machinery and equipment. It's quite a well preserved time machine.

Rick

Hello Ed,

I visit the EBT each year to photograph the trains, equipment and yard facilities. All of the equipment and tools remain in the machine shops, as you mentioned after the crews left. They give shop tours, so you can see the belt driven heavy machinery and equipment. It's quite a well preserved time machine.

Rick

I really have to get there one of theses days. I'm only a few hours away. I've visited Strasburg Railroad which is right across from the PA Railroad Museum. The Museum is cool partly because they have a yard full of stuff waiting to be restored and you can have full run of it. Not LF but here's my D40 images from my last visit there:

Sweet pix Jim. That second one really was lit well. It's too bad Nevada Northern will have no steam this year to repeat those scenes.

foamers? I learn something new this day! Well, if they are foamers, there must be a term for the air show .... fans.

Air show foamers? :D

Strasburg is one of my favorite railroads. Where else can you see steam daily? Not too many places come to mind.

Very nice! Mount Washington is a great operation to photograph. In my memories it was pretty windy and cold (a lot of ice up there). And at this time (indian summer '99) we reduced the average age inside the car by about 10 years (min.). :-)

I got some glas negs (http://24x30.de/index.php?page=gallery.glas.01) from 1926. They were astonishingly easy to print. They show street trains taken at Haarlem and Den Haag (Netherlands) by a german engineer who's name was Franz Finckh. The used camera was a Zeiss Ikon Maximar at 6,5x9 cm² Agfa Isorapid glas negs.

For those who can ignore that they are not taken with a LF camera but like steam trains: :-)

I'm guessing you would pick a point and focus there, stop down a load, insert holder and pull slide, cock shutter, and wait till train reaches said spot and click. Am I right? What do ya'll do?

Thanks,

Jim

windmill blades, mojave

Done with the 11X14 Deardorff V11 and 450mm Nikkor

The hub is on an axle and the front cradle is on rollers. The bumpers on the forward flat cause it to roll slightly on a curve if necessary. 2 flat cars + some engineering for each blade. Pretty cool that we're making something in USA!

I shoot trains almost everyday, including at night. Have been using my Nikon D300 and 1937 Voigtlander Bessa though. I am going to start shooting some HP5 in my Shen Hao 4x5 at night using monolights (I have seven of them, plus batteries.) This thread might inspire me.

You're out in the area of the mile long coal trains I saw when going to the Tetons a few years ago. I would love to photograph that area, including the trains.

Allright I'm going out on a little of a limb here…but some of you got to have some train pix. ....Moving trains tend to be a big challenge with 4x5 because of the speed vs. depth of field issues.

Problem solved. Sorry the solution is so small, I'm on dial up.

I usually tell our students to be careful about having an upper corner being light relative to the rest of the image, as it draws the eye away from the subject. I demonstrate this by covering the bright corner.

I was pleasantly surprised that in your case, the bright upper left of the image becomes an important part of the over-all composition. A well-seen exception to the "rule"!

Me too, but with the slight offset and the tones allowing a bit of separation, I felt that it didn't kill the shot completely. That's one of the problems I have with shooting a super wide pinhole; being able to visualize exactly what's going to happen. Truthfully, I should have re-shot it, but I had moved on to other things. I try to tell myself that the tree coming out of the stack almost looks like smoke. It almost works:)

Thanks for looking.

Western Maryland 236 is a F7A
Western Pacific 805A is a FP7
While they share the same F nose, there are substantial differences.
(and F7A's, although not this one, can also have the traction motors setup for the same gearing as the FP7...note that the WP also used F7B's along with the FP7s, and these had the same gearing)

A couple of circa-1985 shots taken along the train tracks in downtown Santa Barbara, Calif. I used a 4x5 B&J Press/135mm Xenar and Plus-X poorly developed in an Angelus "daylight" tank. (My current Jobo 2520 tank works much better.)

The large building in the center of the first one is the California Hotel, a once-grand hotel in the first block of State Street, SB's main drag. It has been vacant for years, waiting either for a complete tear-down, or an investor with enough money to make it meet the current earthquake-safety standards.

Yes, that's my tripod leg and its shadow in the second shot... I'm too much of a black-border purist-nutcase to crop...

One of my favorite places! Chances are it's still there, they haven't gotten anything up and running in recent years that wasn't already running. The run steam and diesel depending on the day.

I can second the recommendation for Triumph Brewing Company. They have great views of the trains too, it's literally on the other side of the tracks. Not to mention good beer.

For some reason diesels look better in color to me, maybe because they are modern and my brain expects that, compared to a steamy. I was at the bookstore yesterday looking through train magazines to find places near home to take my kids to safely see trains (and make pictures) and with rare exception the diesels were photographed in color and steam in B&W.

Single scan of two 4x5 negatives taken in Goleta, Calif., near Santa Barbara, with a 7" unmarked Darlot-ish Gem-camera petzval lens on a Speed Graphic. I bought the lens from LFFer Garrett and it originally had a ~f6 washer-stop, which I removed, now making it about f4. Used a Speed Graphic and '03-outdated TMAX 100.

Both pics were taken a few minutes away, a few feet apart. The right-hand shot is of a train/track signal, and the 359.4 is the Union Pacific mile marker. (Trivia for other railfans.)

Typical wet spring day in Newburgh along the industrial side of the Hudson River.

My first deliberate attempt to use simulated shift to offset the optical center of the picture (I wanted the lines of the pipes to be the convergence point).

All were shot with a Gundlach 12" f4.5 Radar on Efke 25 in Rodinal at 1:100. They were printed on Arista.EDU FB VC paper in Photographer's Formulary 130. I've still got a ways to go, but 8x10 is highly addictive. I can't even imagine going back to 4x5 now. That ground glass is just beautiful!!!

C&C always welcome!

I had the opportunity to meet David Plowden a couple of years ago at the Center for Railroad Photography and Art's yearly convention. Fascinating photographer and a true gentleman. I'm on a quest to collect all of his books. His pictures tell a great story.

A couple of you brought up D. Plowden. I've had a chance to talk to him the past two years at CRPA also, when everyone one else had run off to get some food. He's probably the closest to my own thinking of anyone I found there. I showed about 40 of my shots, mostly night shots. He once worked for BN at Willmar, MN. That's a town I go to twice a month on my job and am familiar with the area. I also bought his book, "Requiem for Steam." At the book signing, I asked him for a special request. I asked him to sign it, "David Plowden, O.W. Link's assistant." The guys in charge of the event that were within earshot were aghast! Was I insulting Plowden? LOL. Plowden started laughing so hard he sat back in his chair, and said "Sure, I'd be happy to do that!" My book has the following:
"To Kent Staubus--
Who shoots the light, not the trains. Proud to say I was Link's assistant. There was a man who created light! Thanks, D Plowden 4/16/11."

As a night shooter, this is exciting to me. The above has my name, Link's assistant's name, and Link's name all in one place! That alone was worth the price of the book to me. I had several interesting discussions with him as well.

Read an old article on printing the other day that suggested blowing a big plume of cigar smoke under the lens of the enlarger when exposing the paper. I'm sure it would work, but since I don't smoke...

Sam I'd like to show some too
I was just filing negs from that trip and made the mistake of using the loupe- the one i should have brought along and used on the ground glass
I thought I had a coupla good shots in Wind River Cyn but the loupe sez I can't focus a speed graphic - or a 2D -without a loupe. DANG
The technically good shots are old, when i used a Protar and everything was sitting still @ 1/ 25th

Portra 400, 4x5 from my Railroad Landscapes project.

Edward Hopper's "Railroad Sunset" was an inspiration for this image, I need a better sky though.

Although I do love Edward Hopper I prefer your Interpretation to the original, Great photo and in my opinion there is nothing wrong with the sky the contrast between colder background sky, cold steel foreground and warm main subject draws me to the warm patch in the middle and makes the picture work at least for me

I've been sort of "lost" since winter ended. I love the cold & snow! I'm making my current project shots of railroaders with their equipment. I don't have many interesting buildings along the tracks here on the Northern Plains, but what I do have is good access to the trains and people. So, that's the direction I'm going for now. Two shots below of DME engineer near Tracy, MN. One shot is from my Fuji 180mm f5.6 lens. I took another from my Derogy (Petzval) 6 inch f3.5 lens. Once I get consistent "people" shots in day time, I'll set up my lights and start getting them at night.

I didn't realize I could only post one shot per day. Summer is my very least favorite time of year--boring blue skies, bugs, heat, short nights. However, this year I'm trying for more shots with people in them, and will learn how to shoot in the rain. Here's the second one made with the Petzval. I used Efke 25 and some ND filters to do this one.

On a recent trip to Oregon to see the kids I had the big cameras and purposed to pay homage to the little bits and pieces that are left on the NCO corridor. There are a few more to come, but not much.

Wendel Tank

You might know where Alturas is, but Wendel I'll just let you look up on a map. There are some good bits and pieces left there, and so remote and forgotten that I hesitate to draw attention to them. Even so, there's only one building there that probably dates to NCO days. There was a dog there that kept getting closer to show that, yes, he really does mean business, and I only did snapshots of that building with the Nikon. It looked like it was probably a railroad built schoolhouse. Just a guess. The shed in the tank picture is almost certainly a retired caboose with clerestory removed.
