Here's a Scottish themed one. My first Large Format shot outside so go easy on the criticism! :)

Messed around with tones in LR and PS, so apologies if this isn't really in keeping with what people normally do with B&W.

Hi Alan, the sun was out behind the camera, so it helped illuminate the road. I then further dodged the road in Photoshop and added a slight vignette. An orange filter helped the clouds in the distance.
Thank you so much, everyone!

I like the composition generally...with the three strong lines converging towards the left horizon.
I'm a bit distracted by the crooked horizon line, and also I would possibly like to see the close end of the log included in the image, with just a bit of "breathing room" between this and the bottom of the frame.
Also...the far end of the log looks like a dragon's head - and it would be interesting to have taken another image featuring this detail more prominently.
Colors and contrast are believable and softly relaxing - but as always it would be nice to see this as a physical print.

I agree with most of this, and actually never a fan of crooked horizons, but somehow in this image it doesn’t disturb me. It seems to contribute to it even.

Agree with this.
I would also add that there appears to be not enough DoF in the foreground, so perhaps a tilt adjustment was called for here?
In addition I think the composition would have benefitted from a higher camera position with some front fall/rear rise to get the driftwood in. That way the fore-, mid- and background would be better balanced in terms of scale and impact.

Had to wait a fairly long time before the sun broke through. And I saw the scene with the background lit up and a darker foreground. But that didn't happen. Came out good the other way round too, but with a very different feeling and mood.

Yes it's meant to have a very dark white point. Making it to bright takes away a lot of the mood I think. It becomes to up-front so to say.
But there is a hard to balance tipping point from mood to too dark. Maybe I overdid it this time.

Hi
No, I don't think you over did it, the image on my monitor looks dark - but I wasn't sure if that was a function of the scanner or your original intention.
As the photographer, you have the right to print your work how you see fit.
I like the effect - it makes the mood rather foreboding and overall it makes for a fabulous print.

Nicely done, Bryan. It is a difficult image to pull off. You have blended together the fore/mid/background well and avoided what can sometimes give the viewer the feeling of looking at two different images in one photo (I find it distracting). I might print it with a little more atmospheric distance, but that is my Death Valley -- a shake 'n' bake in an oven set too high.
This is the backside of Manly Beacon -- I believe...it has been awhile and sometimes it can be difficult knowing exactly where one is. At the back end of Golden Canyon, though.

Thanks Vaughn. I'll have to experiment with the printing. This is pretty much a straight scan, but I forgot to mention that I used both an R25 filter and polarizer. I was hoping, and got, a good deep shadow with detail in the mountain on the upper right, but I wasn't sure what the sky would do with that filtration. Pretty much the same thing it does here in the summer - a middling grey.

Forgot to mention that this was shot with a B+W UV circular filter and a Tiffen Deep Yellow 15 4x4 filter (1-2/3stops.) The Yellow filter really brings out the detail. Initially I was somewhat concerned about leaving the UV on (overkill?) but left it on. The resulting exposure was f22-1/3 at 1/15 second on Delta 100.

Very nice. I like it a lot
Thanks y'all! The light was so different there than what I was used to. It didn't feel overly contrasty and I think my meter reading gave me a solid 7-8 stops, but the impressive array of green tones makes a great greyscale! I shot this in color too I think...
CB, this is developed in Pyrocat 1:1:100, for 20 minutes at 75F, with agitation at the start and every 6-7 minutes. So not quite stand development but almost. Also, the developer is used twice. Once for 5 rolls of film (agitated normally, 11 minutes) and then 6 sheets of 4x5. This seems to work well for me and is economical when I shoot a lot of rolls and sheets!

So how did the Hao do in the Hoh?
:)
That reminds me. I had to wait almost 30 minutes for folks to stop walking through the area or looking at the camera and talking with me about this or that. I'm lucky to have gotten a few seconds to shoot my exposure! I think this is my favorite b&w 4x5 from the trip, unless I find something better in the half dozen sheets of Efke I shot and haven't developed yet.

Excellent, "greens" are always a mystery to me (unfortunate for our part of the world;)) so it's nice to see what can be done "filterless."

I like the rainforests shots the best from your trip so far. And the boat at Point Reyes.
CB - Try delta 100 for greens in spring/early summer. It takes on a different quality and separates out the yellow, green, blue much better than HP5 and even FP4. I have no idea why as its tonal range is about the same as FP4, but its noticeable in large areas of green.

CB - Try delta 100 for greens in spring/early summer.
Very cool--Paul Barden mentioned Delta 100 as a favorite a while back; and I believe it was John Layton who was recommending X-ray film for green vegetation as well. (FWIW, I'm am patiently awaiting someone to reintroduce 8x10 IR film, but that might be after the Last Trump sounds.:))
It would be interesting to shoot in such a lush but almost monocolored environment, with a variety of color filters and polarizer on different films.
I also noticed less reflective highlights like we have here with some of the leaves that are waxy. I think that makes a much bigger difference in the rendering than I would have guessed, visually.
I'm lucky that I got to Hoh. For reasons I won't really go into, I didn't think I was going to get there, and then I buckled down and made a full round-trip of the Olympic Peninsula in a day so I could get out there and shoot for about 2 hours.

My work with large format is so much better than with anything hand held. It slows you down and requires you to compose your photograph with more care. Have you ever seen a contact print from an 8x10 or even 4x5? No comparison to smaller formats. I have always said that 90% of all photographs can be made on tripod. Unless you are an action photographer, that alone will improve your work.

Did you use some tilt or a small aperture (or maybe both)?

Thank you, Peter.
I used rise on the front standard to get the waterfall in. However tilt would have made the top of the fall out of focus so I had to rely on a small aperture.

This image is more sparse but I have a stronger feeling of "heat" from it. Though that may be my perception having been there as the temperature reached the mid 110s. But the angle of light as well as the stronger contrast (Efke 25) has kept me engaged with this image.
As an aside, while I was setting up this shot, a photographer with multiple cameras on their shoulders came up and asked me "where this picture is," showing me their cell phone with a shot of Badwater Basin with perfect hexagonal salt formations. As you can see in these images, the hexagons are buckled and breaking. I told her that we were at Badwater Basin but I didn't know why they were not like the typical pictures. I assumed it has to do with rain or lack of it, but I'll have to read a bit more about the basin and see if there is different explanations. Or maybe there is just a different location in the area that looks like that.

What are the light streaks up at the top part of the image? Flare? Light leak?
Cool shot!
Possibly a little bit of flare. I also had this film in the car for over 3 weeks and I think the heat and such may have impacted it a little bit, at least the color film, which was already expired.

Your right - it is all about the water table in the salt pan.
The salt is sat on top of an ooze of mud - hence the dreadful smell off the salt.
It is possible to have the salt flooded in exceptional circumstances (after a lot of rain) and as it dried out you get the perfect looking salt hexagons.
As the mud dries even more, the salt hexagons buckle and break apart to give you what you have in your shot.
Fabulous shot by the way.

Very nice view of Lujiazui--I'm afraid I've only seen it from the Bund during the day (and not, I'm guessing from this shot, from Suzhou Creek.) Those exposed rock faces really lend a lovely tonality--as for the stream, it might be worth exploring if you can retain a bit of texture in the water by making "accumulative" exposures. Otherwise a great place to explore!:)

Exposure was around 15 minutes f/16 on fp4.
Developed in Xtol 1+1 for 13 min in rotation so pushed a bit.
Still a hint of ambient light being so far north.
But the moon travels a fair bit in that time so I made a much shorter exposure for the moon part and then assembled in PS

This lens was mounted using a 3D printed adapter (thanks to LargeSense Camera for providing the file that was edited and printed by Zebra Dry Plates). Camera was taken apart and the bed physically bent to get out of the way of the image circle. Still debating ripping it off entirely. Since the FFD of all P67 lenses are the same, I can use any of them on this 4x5 - I've heard some cover or nearly cover, so I'll try all of mine at some point, but the 35mm was my main interest. This was one of the first test images I made this afternoon. Especially interested in doing some architectural shots with this camera.

Very very good! This is top craftmanship, combined with a very well succeeded original and artistic result; a rare combination. Incredible, rarely seen depth and 3D effect. Congrats

Nice Bryan!
OK...here's a mind-bending question: what if you mounted two of these Pentax fisheye lenses on a board and placed them in front of a long-format camera - for "fisheye stereo" images? You could probably also cobble together some optics from a supply house (like Edmund Optics) to best take advantage of the specific properties of the images in creating a fisheye stereo viewing device?
Further thought - I'd imagine that in the above scenario the interocular distance would (due to lens front diameters) be significantly further apart than that of most human eyes and thus the 3-D effect would be further exaggerated...could be great!
Thank you both! John, it sounds like you are starting to describe VR goggles :). I would imagine the 180 degree FOV would be exceedingly disorienting.

Bryan...did you incorporate some sort of intermediately adapted shutter into your Pentax lens to LF interface...or simply use the "lens cap method" by which to make your exposure?

Bryan great shot. All you need are snowflakes floating around in the globe.
Hi John - nope, I am using the Speed Graphic's focal plane shutter (take a look at my Instagram for a pic of the camera, second image in the first post). Though for this image I probably could've used a lens cap - the exposure was 3.5 minutes. So much is in the frame that I would be hesitant to do that though - I would not be surprised to see a blurred arm in the photo.
Thanks Alan. We'll see if snow comes this year :).

I made a 15" print last night. I'm leaning towards a circular mat. I think it'll be unique, and one friend suggested perhaps even a circular frame too.
Either way I want to get a circular mat cut to different print sizes to make a physical "mask," allowing the print to look more like the above scan with a white surround, rather than being suspended in black which I think is a bit depressive.

Very nice, though unless there are a lot of hobbits on the ground there in N Ga. :) I think I'd like to see this one drymounted on 16x24 gatorboard, with maybe 40% bottom weight. (FWIW, I generally don't like the negative space/museum look, I'm thinking floating this one in space like the proverbial Big Blue Marble might be arresting.)

Hello! Missed this post somehow. Very cool. Wonderful image...I like how it does not over-play the fisheye effect. Having that tree trunk on the left is perfect...and I like that the composition, while not centered, places one's eye in the image's center -- and since there is nothing in the center to grab one's eye, one is free to wander back into the rest of the environment. It keeps the image active. Pretty nice 'test image'!
A good friend does a lot of work with the circular image...an interesting departure from his earlier panoramic work. Going out into the field with him is fun -- his camera 'sees' so differently! I have a couple of his prints in my living room.
He has enlarged them to mural size (digitally) and made large silver gelatin prints. One of his is on my wall (living room) is a 14" dia image on a 15x19 horizontal black frame, with the non-image portions of the paper exposed to black. The framing is an interesting choice, normally would not be my first choice but works well specifically with this image.
With your image (and if it were mine to frame), I would tend towards a more traditional approach. Printed on silver gelatin paper, window matted square, but on a vertical rectangular frame. Square frames can work very well, but they also can tend to over-play the form of the circle. But what is more comforting than a square box containing a circle of warm pizza, cut into lovely triangles? Excuse me...still on my diet...
Another way to get white around the image area is to make a circular mask to lay on the photopaper. You could make a mask slight larger than the image if you wanted a thin black line around the image (to hold in skies, etc). Edited -- whoops I read a later post that this is what you'll be doing.
Have fun!
PS -- just thinking...if your enlarger is not well aligned, the circle may not be so circular!

Hello!
Thanks for your thoughts Vaughn! It was great seeing Geir's prints on your wall. I found a website with some of his fisheye images (https://www.modernbook.com/geirjordahl/circles/images.htm).
I definitely will be thinking about presentation. I did get a circular mat cut, inside of a square mat, and I like the look. But there's lots of options to try. I also had some time this afternoon to shoot more circular images that I need to develop here tonight...

Thanks John! The symmetry definitely works well with the frame. I love the sun shining with little sun stars through the background in the other though....
I'd say the first is the stronger composition, the second has more of a chaotic appeal.

The Mamiya 37mm was my initial plan, what with the shutter. But I had the Pentax already so went with it, for now.
The Mamiya not only benefits from a built-in Seiko shutter, but using filters on it is E-Z -- unlike most fisheyes. I'm not sure if this is true for all of the Mamiya 37mm lenses -- they made several versions -- but on my C 37mm (RB Pro-S era) there is a rear 40.5mm filter thread. With two step up rings, I can use any of my 55 or 77mm filters (my standards) -- even polarizers. (I still need to make some IR shots someday, though. :o)
And don't forget that with simple cropping you can make a FULL-FRAME 180° fisheye image -- which can be quite dramatic for certain subjects.
http://www.subclub.org/fujinon/gonefishin.pdf (http://www.subclub.org/fujinon/gonefishin.pdf)
Thanks y'all - I like the "little world" idea. Though it reminds me of the "little planet" images that were a big fad maybe ten years ago in the digital world, done by making a ton of images and stitched in photoshop into a sphere
xkaes, the Pentax has the usual fisheye filter set built-in, but not the rear filter thread. That's interesting, though perhaps not of much use other than the IR filter idea you mentioned (I tend to use R25 myself). I'm not sure what you mean by "full-frame 180 degree fisheye" in context of the 37mm vs my 35mm Pentax - that's exactly what I have here on 4x5 film (scanned and cropped square, of course). Perhaps you thought I meant a 35mm-film-sized fisheye but I mean the one for Pentax 67, 35mm focal length. As usual your website doesn't work - DNS errors on your end.

I was unaware that the Pentax 35mm had filters built-in. That helps, but not with IR, of course. The R25 is the next best thing, but on my lenses that I can't use an IR filter, I combine an R25 with a X11 (green). Together they get rid of most of the visible light. http://www.subclub.org/gallery/laundry.htm (http://www.subclub.org/gallery/laundry.htm)
As to the "FULL-FRAME" format, as you know, the Pentax 35mm and Mamiya 37mm were designed as full-frame fisheyes (like the 15mm, 16mm & 17mm 35mm fisheyes), and adapting them to 4x5" makes them CIRCULAR fisheyes (like the 7mm, 7.5 & 8mm 35mm fisheyes). I was just pointing out that the 4x5" circular image with these lenses can be cropped to its original, rectangular 6x7 format -- it's still a 180° fisheye image, just FULL-FRAME, not CIRCULAR. Which to use? Depends on the subject and the photographer.
Happy shooting.

If one gets a 47-75 wide angle for 4x5 will it give a full image circle on 5x7 or 8x10 film?
If one gets a 47-75 wide angle for 4x5 will it give a full image circle on 5x7 or 8x10 film?
Any lens will give you a circular image if the film is larger than the image circle. BUT, the image will only be a fisheye if it is a non-rectilinear optic. For example, in 35mm format, you can have a 15mm full-frame fisheye with a 180° angle of view, and a 15mm full-frame rectilinear with a 110° angle of view. The difference -- besides the angle of view -- is mainly that one produces straight lines as straight, the other, as curved.
So if you like circular images, the world is your oyster -- but there's no need to buy new lenses or a larger format camera! Just put a narrow lens hood on whatever wide-angle lens you have.

Ah, I understand what you mean now. I did notice the 35mm Pentax barely covers the nominal 6x7 image size.
Here's a sheet of Velvia 50 I developed last night, from way back in June. It was agonizing waiting for a family to get out of my frame. I specifically avoided where they were, taking family snapshots, to stay out of their frame. And then just as I got ready to shoot they looked right at me and walked into my shot. They wandered around for almost 30 minutes before finally moving behind the tufa enough for me to bang out a quick color image. The light went from sunset reds to blue post-sunset but there was nothing to do but wait, unless I wanted 4-5 random folks in the midground

Ha! Years ago I had a similar "interference" issue at Mono Lake...and while I always try to respect the rights of others to move freely about areas in which I'm otherwise attempting to make photographs, in that particular instance it became obvious to me that the culprit was truly attempting to hinder my work - and after I called him on this he reluctantly walked off in a huff! (hmmm...maybe my camera was bigger than his )

I've mainly had the opposite experience where people don't want to walk in front of my camera -- not realizing that: #1 - I've already taken the picture or #2 - It's going to take me at least 15 minutes to set everything up. So I have to assure them that "Everything is OK!".

Same here -- or it is a long enough exposure they are not going to show up unless they decide to sit awhile and contemplate their navels.
This image was improved by two ladies enjoying the fall from the log near the water by making me wait until they left...the light got even better.
As they say, some people are like clouds; the day brightens up when they leave...
I think the "some people" you are referring to are largely "in-laws".

And me too.
And the more pictures I take the less I am stressed about "lost opportunities" due to someone walking into "my" scene. What works : avoiding places where everyone else goes or going there during the times when not many come (early mornings and off-seasons are the best still):)
Nice image Vaughn.
To be fair, I generally don't have issues with folks coming into my shot. At worst, folks are in the shot while I set up, and I expect they'll be leaving soon, so I wait till this happens. This was a bit more...deliberate, it seemed, but it is what it is. I almost walked over and asked them to move slightly behind a tufa for a few minutes but didn't.
Anyway, I also shot this sheet, whilst specifically avoiding the area they were using (that's the thing - I was at least trying to stay out of their family photo shoot!). Same setup.

My wife and I listened to an interesting podcast recently, about being able to see other peoples' points of view. They featured a first grade teacher who had his students draw a picture of their home. He then asked them to draw three more, all different, to try to get them to look at things differently. I was thinking "I need to do that when I photograph!"
After that, he had the students constructively critique each others' drawings as well.

Is the sky so blue because of no center filter or a polarizer? Nice shot.
Thanks Alan. I probably used a pol here. The sun was set but the sky in the upper right is still illuminated I guess (civil twilight) making it brighter. If on b&w film I could probably burn it down. On a print of this I might consider dodging the darker blue sky a bit.

FWIW, I have over the last couple of years changed my approach to landscape photography.
I have stopped just taking one photograph of a subject but to approach it more like a portrait session - spend a lot longer taking many more shots of a single chosen subject from different perspectives and different compositions using different lenses as necessary.
It means I end up with a range of shots of the subject to choose from.
YMMV

Nice shot Gabe. Is it a little dark to me. I have a monitor calibrated to sRGB. You say you color correct based on Adobe. But the internet uses sRGB. So could the conversion defeat your calibration?
Histogram seems a little on the dark side.

Thanks Alan. Adobe RGB vs sRGB won't have any noticeable affect on the image histogram.
The image is purposefully somewhat dark, which matches my recollection of the conditions at the time. Bear in mind this was fairly late on an overcast day in October, and also the subject is in a heavily wooded gorge. Viewing it on a white background doesn't help though. Better to view it fullscreen on black.

I'm kind of with Alan, but it is up to you to render the scene as you see fit.
Great composition - I know from personal experience that photographing groups of trees is NOT like shooting fish in a barrel, although it seems it should be...

In the cold light of day I realised you guys were right. It was too dark. That's what happens when you edit late at night when you're tired. I've replaced the original with a half stop brighter version.

Thanks Alan. I tend to favour a slightly darker rendering of images than most, but again I think that in staring at the image for hours I had lost perspective slightly. I sometimes fall foul of posting images immediately, when leaving and coming back to them with fresh eyes might benefit. A whole extra stop is too much IMO, but I have tweaked it up about a half stop again and replaced the original. I get the feeling that my method of inverting colour negs artificially depresses the mid-tones in order to avoid clipping, which then needs compensating for to varying degrees.
Another possible factor is your monitor's output may be set too dark. This is the problem with digital presentation; everyone's screens are different.

Eye fatigue is a problem. We adapt to what we look at for too long. One check is to view the histogram. If you do that, you can readily see the right space is empty.

I do routinely check the histograms when editing, but I also only treat them as a guide rather than gospel. Depending on the nature of the scene, the "correct" rendering can often produce histograms which are far from evenly weighted.
